At long last, AMD has launched their new Zen 4 CPUs, Ryzen 7950X, 7900X, 7700X, and 7600X, and they look great. Alongside the enhancements of socket AM5, these new chips look like they give Intel a run for their money... or do they? AMD has a bit of an issue of not being better than their best gaming chip, or better value than Intel's platform which makes some of these chips hard to recommend. And with Intel's Raptor Lake looming on the horizon, AMD's future might not look so bright anymore.

also it helps AMD in getting MORE customers. Because not everyone will go to the newest CPU - the costs are higher and it's still a first gen of AM5, and many, especially companies, are not early adopters. But they know, they can still upgrade their Zen 1 to a Zen 3 in the future and get quite the performance of a Zen 4. (Don't forget, that many companies will be forced to do that in 2023-2025, when Windows 10 gets into the finish line of their support time thanks to Microsoft schenanigans)

Yep, and that's why I took the decision last year to buy a 5600G rather than an X and lost a few CPU benchmark points. But in daily driving I honestly wouldn't know. I had to test out the integrated graphics without my discrete GPU in and if you're happy to reduce the graphics quality a little, games will still look and work fine. Not great, but not bad either, so it makes a good lifeboat if the worst happens until you can afford a new discrete GPU.

I'm interested to know how those minimums are measured. The 3950X had reported decent minimums, but the actual experience in some games is nearly unplayable (at least for someone like me that values smoothness) due to the CCX design. Even a game like minecraft which is often a cakewalk today often has stutter and hitching issues that make it difficult to enjoy. I've seen this with every game I play and it makes me almost wish I went 9th gen Intel at the time since the other Intel systems in my family were getting higher and smoother FPS.

Whatever the case, I'm just glad that AMD and Intel are finally very competitive (In the desktop/laptop market). It was rather annoying during the 2010's when AMD had no competitor to Intel's top chips. The huge gain in single core performance has convinced me to upgrade my 3900x to a 7900x. Although, Intel is still not competitive enough with AMD's EPYC server CPU's, and barely competitive with Thread Ripper. In that segment, you're better off going AMD.

@@wdunn06 I got my 7900x a few days ago. Awesome performance, but the DDR5 side of it seems to be a little bit finicky. It took me an hour just to get it to boot. Had to turn off EXPO, then it started working. Turned EXPO back on yesterday and suddenly it's working fine now. Except POST takes like, 20-30 seconds. It apparently has to "train" the DDR5 timings during POST and that can take a long time. My advice: Give it a few months. There's also the rumored Zen 4 X3D versions coming in January!

I think this is just a simple case of early adopters paying the price. As more affordable motherboards come out, more DDR5 RAM is available, and sales start happening, it will all make more sense from a financial standpoint. Normally I would agree, but new gens are usually associated with significant performance improvements. The improvements with these chips don't seem to be gamer oriented. So, adoption will be much slower, and therefore the rate the price comes down will be tantalizingly slow.

@agentooe33AD
@agentooe33AD Жыл бұрын
@@marcfruchtman9473 Actually, that would hasten the prices lowering. If there's not a high demand, they'll have to lower prices to get people to buy them. The initial Zen 4 chips were primarily designed for servers and laptops (hence the iGPU), and enough gamning performance to compete. The V-Cache models are the ones to get ifyou want next gen. Current prices are for early adopters only. Once that crowd gets their fill, prices will go down. Most gamers will likely just stick wtih a 5800x3d and DDR4 if they're building now, or one of the cheaper intel chips. Next year will be when gamers start adopting AM5 when the V cache chips come out.

@@Kevin-gf4im To be fair the 5900/5950 weren't supposed to be the gaming chips. People just tried to make them into that. The 5800X was the sweet spot because all the cores and cache were a single chip instead of the chiplet design where everything works until whatever is in cache gets split or the workload ends up split between the two chiplets which hurts performance. That's why they added the 3D cache to the 5800 and not the 5900/5950 in the first place. It was in the best place to take advantage of that performance uplift. Considering the benchmarks I'd say AMD hit that one square on the head...almost too well.

I know that you will read that, Linus ;) From labs I would've expected to see the power draw comparison vs similarly configured Intel system. Maybe simulate 1hr of gaming with the exact same inputs and also maybe a 1hr encoding or rendering job and measure the whole system power draw. Use the same power supply, AIO cooler that has adapters for both intel and AMD, graphics card and RAM and similar mid-range motherboard from the same manufacturer. That would be interesting. Does AMD boost high with high power draw, but being fast, for a very short period, so that the overall power draw is actually less? Taking into account also the needed extra cooling performance, it would be very interesting, measuring the cooling power draw, the CPU power draw and the overall power draw from the wall. You could make it more interesting via making LTT staff bet on which one comes on top in horse race betting style.

I would love to see a gradient of benchmarks from 8th or 9th gen Intel to current gen or 13th gen. I am sporting a 9900k and I am starting to feel it struggle on applications like Photoshop, Lightroom, DNG Converter, and Premier. I see a lot of comparison of the new stuff with last gen, but I imagine most people are going be coming off of older gen CPUs and wondering, what will be the best value for their workflow in the next gen of Intel or AMD. Video comparisons I have seen have mostly been game related, and the FPS improvements, while better, were nothing that made me think I need to run out and get a 12900k over my 9900k. But an array of benchmarks across multiple work domains would be more useful.

@@ScrewFearMe That's kind of the big problem. Linus didn't really cover it well, but the power rate per kwh has been trending upward all across North America, with some places (like parts of California) being nuts. If you use your computer for many hours per day, that 150 watt difference between AMD and Intel adds up to thousands of dollars over the life of the computer. (Unless you get free power. But then someone else is paying it.) Thousands of dollars is a lot of parts upgrades. Most of my friends that went Intel are sporting upper midrange chips, while most of my friends that went AMD just opted for the highest tier, often with GPUs a notch higher too - and still save money over time due to that lower power consumption. It's way easier to collect the money to upgrade if you're not flushing tons more away on your power bill.

@@DailyCorvid yeah eco mode in ryzen master is pretty effective for lowering power draw, I'm sure if you really dial it in like 1usmus you can get some bonkers efficiency and/or performance improvements too. I think it's easy to get caught up in the way cpus/gpus are configured out of the box but in reality you can quite often dial things back and end up with an even better product if you're willing to take the time to get under the hood.

If you’re a sim, RTS, or VR gamer, the X3D is simply better. Simulations and high unit counts are cache-limited. VR has to reuse data for each frame pair. Cache is life for those. It also helps minimum FPS and stuttering immensely.
