@@silverhawkroman what’s the benefit of that? You’re still being hated and still less and less people are willingly paying these prices. AMDs market share growth is inevitable with one impossible expectation. Nvidia would give 50+ % performance boost with a 30-50% price decrease. Share holders will not like this, thus nvidia will probably try to invent unnecessary features no one is asking for to justify increasing prices. And the 40series is doomed anyways, cuz they will not lower prices in the middle after selling already to said high price… I would throw my 4090 in the bin after such action’s taken.

AMD has wiggle room here. The 7900XTX doesn't need to be within spitting distance of the 4090, it just needs to be respectable. It’s the 4080 that’s disgusting corporate greed. Or perhaps the “4080 12GB” is the real symbol of corporate shenanigans. The 4090 actually delivers more performance per dollar in ray tracing. It also doubles as a card for work due to NVIDIA’s lead in creative and professional workloads. It also is the flagship, which have always commanded premiums. Future wise maybe but as said in the video, currently AMD's drivers/performance just isn't up to par in for example Blender (as other rendering software like V-ray don't even have compatibility with ROCM). Currently AMD's high end GPU (RX6900XT) is getting it's ass kicked by both Intel's and Nvidia's low end offerings (A750 and RTX3050) in Blender cycles. AMD is just being too slow with implementing ROCM, which is abundantly clear if Intel managed better Blender performance on their first GPU stack with what are meant to be low-end/budget offerings (again compared to an RX 6900 XT for crying out loud). In Blender's Eevee they are finally starting to catch up because even there, in Blender 3.1 and 3.2 the RTX 3050 was beating the RX 6900 XT. With 3.3 and the latest release of ROCm, we are finally seeing more normal performance (RX 6900 XT and 6800XT being closer to a RTX 3080 10 GB but not beating it) still considering the hardware you would expect better numbers. AMD is trying to get Ray Tracing ready for Cycles by Blender 3.5 but so is Intel and Intel already seems a lot closer. Blender 3.5 also won't see a release till March 15 2023. I don't like Nvidia, I use Linux and have had to rollback the drivers a couple of times as an update would make some games completely unable to launch. Their locked down drivers mean game performance doesn't improve as much as old AMD gpu's do thanks to open source drivers and community support. Not to mention those horrendous prices, the RTX 40XX not improving that situation in the slightest. But that Blender performance has to be fixed before I would even want to switch to AMD.

I have three AMD based systems in the house (5800x, 5600x, and a 2700x) and the one thing that has always impressed me is how they are generally not power hungry for the performance given. The new GPUs look like they are going down that road. Given their provided power numbers, you could say their performance per watt is WAY ahead of Nvidia, in the same manner that their CPUs are per watt ahead of Intel as well. Considering that electricity costs are spiking all over, it seems like a very valid point of comparison at this moment.

I did my first AMD CPU build with the 7950X and have little regret. That being said AMD is actually performance competitive to Intel unlike the GPU space where at the very high end they have been lacking offerings. Also driver support for AMD has gotten better but their issues don’t seem to get the same level of urgency from developers as the Nvidia counterparts. Case and point let’s look at Call of Duty which is one of the largest triple A titles. Call of duty has historically been a Intel/Nvidia favored game for years and I would like to see AMD try to work closer with Actvision to try and get some more performance parity and fix bugs

You 'can' run ROCm on some consumer GPUs, but it's unofficial and they will not support you, they won't even provide a support table of which GPUs will work. It doesn't look like they ever plan to change this. Them talking about "AI cores" while simultaneously not supporting their own GPUs for AI drives me insane.

CUDA is crap to program on. Any serious ML application should be programmed with the cuDNN primitive libraries which you can call from pytorch, so you don't have to concern yourself with CUDA itself, which is terrible and with bad documentation. cuDNN is also much faster since it offers hard-coded optimised models for the cards. AMD does not have a good answer to that today, but the concept is indeed promising and much better organised than CUDA which is chaotic.

I wouldn't. I mean, I hate the Nvidia pricing but if Im gonna get a flagship gpu, I want to get its best performance at the highest graphics settings. And AMD strangely does not want to enable the highest graphics settings, they stick to baked lighting raster performance which begs the question: Why even spend 1k on a gpu if thats all you want? Get a 7800 XT instead then, or a 4080/4070.. It's not like raster performance has hard limits to begin with, current highend gpus can already easily push 60-100fps in 4k raster, might as well get one of those at a discount. Both Nvidia and AMD lost their grip on pricing this round. And to me, the 4090 still looks like a far better deal than the 7900 XTX, with its far better peak graphic performance, and actually being a professional workload capable card on top. It's just a much more well rounded package that doesn't lose out anywhere, except the one metric that all gpus these days perform well in anyways (raster).

Yeah... my biggest issue with AMD gpu's is that generally, pro software cannot use them for rendering or general tasks being offloaded to them because pro software devs typically program for CUDA and OptiX. AMD DOES have HIP/ROcm and Vulkan, both of which could be used as a replacement for CUDA and OptiX, especially with inclusion of AI onto their cores in RDNA 3, but like you mentioned, the probability of seeing this being used outside of games is highly unlikely. What is also bugging me is the fact that Vulkan and D3D12 have been out in the wild for over half a decade now. They were/are clearly superior to OpenCL, so why don't the devs remove outdated OpenCL already from their software and just use Vulkan instead at least which is hw agnostic? I'd LOVE to get RDNA 3 because it has the power, efficiency and capability, but if the pro software problem persists by next year when I plan to upgrade my system, then I'm afraid I'll have to go with NV (and I REALLY don't want to). My coursework (sadly) requires use of Arnold renderer which is CUDA/OptiX only. Sure, one can render on the CPU, but that's SLOW. AMD does have Radeon Pro Renderer however, BUT the issue is that for Max 2023 (which I also use), development of RPR stopped (and it doesn't help the fact that most people in the industry don't seem to use RPR). You can find RPR for Maya 2023 (which is useful) and of course Blender leverages use of HIP/ROCm for rendering on AMD gpu's, but otherwise, no other software really does this. This is AMD's biggest weakness. Gaming is something I do, but its occasional, and I need a capable gpu for content creation primarily so I can work faster/better.

Personally I'm stunned AMD is able to compete so well with better efficiency, on a worse manufacturing node and a brand new multi-chiplet architecture... All while they only have 10% of GPU market share. AMD's GCD die size is signficantly smaller than NVIDIA's and has the potential to be much larger, RX 7950 should be pretty nuts and faster than the 4090. I've owned many ATi/AMD cards over the years, and Radeon is currently in the best state it has ever been in, and the wider adoption AMD has and the more mindshare they earn, the better it will get. Turns out that once you refuse to give nVidia more money and stop caring about their product stack, AMD cards can do everything you need them to do for you, and they perform great. Sure, nVidia has had the performance crown for a while now, both in gaming and productivity, but they went total cutthroat and started alienating the people that helped them get to where they are now. Too many people have come to the conclusion that "Radeon only exists to make GeForce cheaper," and now GeForce is more expensive than it has ever been because it doesn't work that way. Using the chart in the AMD presentations and the FPS numbers on their website, and some help from techpowerup's benchmark tables, I was able to determine that in 4K gaming, a 3080ti should hypothetically perform at roughly 70-72% on average compared to the 7900XTX. Where I live a XTX would come out to about $1,100 after tax, so basically I'm getting 70% of the performance for 50% of the prices. In my case, I'm running a Ryzen 3600 with 2800MT RAM. I'm happy because realistically speaking, to take advantage of the new cards I would need to upgrade my CPU, mobo, and RAM, which IMO is a lot, especially when considering the real world benefit of going from say, 120fps to 160. New advanced Encoding faster than Nvidas using the both CPu and GPU, DLSS 3.0 of their own using AI, Amazing streaming performance, and yes this card will beat the 4080 16gb. It'll be between the 4080 16gb and the 4090. All this at $999 and it's thin, and sips power with a mere 2 connecters. I have a 4gb 1050Ti that I have been wanting to upgrade for years, I didn't even want to buy it in the first place but miners had bought literally every other card available so it was all I could get, but the absurd prices have put me off. I just couldn't pull the trigger on a card when I felt like it was being overpriced just because they could. I won't spend $1000 on a card but I would spend $350 - $450 on one, so hopefully I can get a mid-range AMD that has pretty good specs. The 7900XT gives me hope in getting a lower mid-range card for a reasonable price, I just hope that card availability is not an issue. Please put pressure on Nvidia to lower their prices also.

The power part is a big part of my decision making here (Along with the quality of the Linux drivers). Not screwing up on the power draw makes it an option for an upgrade for me. Not having to buy a new power supply and basically redo all of the cables in my case is hugely appealing. I know a new power supply isn't crazy expensive compared to the card (Like 150 bucks for a good one), but the time spent redoing the cables is not insignificant, and definitely is a pain in the rear end.
@AlexanderPavel

You may also need a new case. I know the Strix 4090 won't fit in my case (Lianli Lancool 2), at least not without removing my front mounted AIO. A lot of cases are too small for the 4090s. The 7900XTX is large, but will likely fit in most full sized towers. You also don't have to worry about the cables catching fire due to bending like in the 4090s

@@AlexanderPavel Don't even get me started on that. The AMD should fit fine. I have a corsair carbide 200r. It's supposed to have 360mm of clearance for a card. Although I don't want to give up that case because I've customized it a fair bit.

If your power supply is strong enough (850 or more), you only need a new cable. Corsair has an 12/16 pin to dual 8 pin for their power supplies, and cablemod has or will have similar. If you have two 8 pin connectors on your power supply, you're good or soon will be.

I'm just happy GPU's are somewhat sensible again. You can build a last gen system for a steal RN. 6800 (non XT) can be had for under $500. 6900xt can be had for under $700. 12th gen intel chips are starting to get dirt cheap too (12700K for less than $400 and 12600K for less than $300) If you play at 1440p, you should be set for a good while. Most of the cost from my current build is coming from PCIE gen 4 storage, and even that's about 50% of what it was a year ago (7400mb/s read 7000mb/s write 2tb drives are like $225 when they used to be like $480).
