Yeah but did you realize none of the flagship Android manufacturers include headphone jack these days? As if Apple is the only one ditched the headphone jack. They kept the headphone jack on the Macs because pro apps like Logic Pro X which is a DAW(Digital Audio Workstation) are for professionals and they do need a headphone jack. Unlike Google who's going to ditch the headphone jack on the Pixelbook 2019 as they ditched it on the last year's Pixel Slate.

Likely they can't get off their lazy bum to integrate the two OSes that they've built. Likely code is so shit they're better off rewriting one or both of them, which they couldn't justify the cost of. Seems like people doing this on a volunteer basis (linux) will soon outpace apple at this rate.
@TheHellogs4444
@TheHellogs4444 5 жыл бұрын
@Kamal Kristipati I don't like touchscreen on laptops either. And to bolster my point, windows is so bad Linux touchpad gestures and navigation is better. Built by volunteers. How exactly would you describe windows then? I'd say they're incompetent. Iirc Linux had gestures programming before jobs even returned to Apple. Whichever way you look at it, EVERYTHING is better off being open source. It's not like everybody will now use a windows fork if they DID do it. They can just add the new feature to mainline windows too. (Look at how many people use Android forks rn. Very few, because mainline takes the best of all worlds.) People are what they are. To me it appears stupid/lazy/not well thought out because I see no business value to their approach. We're seeing companies of this kind right now, look around.
@TheHellogs4444
@TheHellogs4444 5 жыл бұрын
@Kamal Kristipati To address your point directly, yes, what you're saying is their perspective. You're including them in your empathy, they don't include you. Their OS not being designed that way is a NEGATIVE. Why do you see it as "that's how god meant it to be"? So much blind love lmao. So much that neutral comments appear like hate.

I still use my 2012 MBA as well, a daily driver for 7 years now. First for studying, now for my job as developer. Really surprised how well it holds up. I did replace the battery two years ago but that's it. If they only didn't replace the IMO great keyboards from the older models, I'd might consider upgrading to a newer model. I absolutely despise the new keyboards.
@Ereinion25

@kimmym1119depends on what you're building really. For most regular web development it's still perfectly capable, but if you're gonna write C++ games with Unreal (which I did with the air since I had no alternative machine at the time) it's definitely not ideal to say the least. What probably really helped is that the 2012 air to age well was the first Macbook that came with a decent SSD instead of slow HDD or flash storage. That said, I did replace it last month though. Switched jobs to where I have lots of compiling and building on heavy, large applications to be done. And for that it simply not as fast as modern machines.

@willmather4046 5 жыл бұрын
That is insanely false. Apple has no problem with cannibalizing their own products. If they were so concerned with that kind of thing they never would have released the iPhone which destroyed iPod sales. The real reason is the design folk at Apple don't think a touchscreen feels natural on a laptop and macOS is not designed with a touchscreen in mind. If they were to introduce you would expect a heavy UI redesign at which point apple would probably just point to the iPad pro.

About the multitasking thing, you can actually organize pretty well, when you go full screen on a program or app, you can swipe them, with the 3 fingers gesture, to the sides goes to the next to the right or left, and if you go up, it shows you everything and it lets you arrange them in the most convenient order. Fullscreen also gives you extra screen space. About the desktop, you can establish a command to clear the desktop. So many great things with the Mac OS, but i miss a lot my old fx 8350 build... Also you can divide the screen placing your desired apps in the desktop and hold the green button until it splits.

That works, and is better then not having window splitting at all, but it simply cannot be compared to how easy it is to do the same thing in Windows. Also a PC guy here, I opted for a razer blade 2018 and man that was a beautiful machine, but it was not without flaws. The specs were very impressive but failed to operate at anything less than 90+ degrees celsius under load, the bezel got so hot that I suspect the heat being vented through the touch screen from the top bezel melted the glue attaching the screen to the chassis. This happened on two occasions after RMA. I therefore caved, and for the first time ever bought the macbook 13 with touch bar. Still getting use to the mac OS, but the design and simplicity just works, the touch pad is as good as linus mentioned and the touch bar whilst not a necessity adds some QOL improvements. Even under load the temperatures remain well within satisfactory territory and never gets so hot as to not be able to touch it.

Or you could just install Manjaro, KDE version, and have window snapping like in windows. You can also make it look almost exactly like OSX and have your phone messages show up on the screen with bluetooth and KDE connect. You just need to get 2 drivers off of the AUR, one for the webcam and one for the wifi card. Edit: Well at least on the 2017 version this works, not sure about the 2018 version.

Well balanced review, Linus (from a decade-long iMac user who recently switched to an Intel Hades Canyon at home and a MacBook 12” for the road). Tip: for the window management issue, add some virtual desktops and get Magnet from the App Store. It solves that particular limitation beautifully and once you’ve mastered the keyboard shortcuts, it’s muscle memory.

For organization of desktop and windows (snapping side by side, etc.) I use the "Spectacle" app. It's even better than Win 10's implementation of windows organization as it doesn't require you to select the app to take up the second part of the screen after you resize the first one. Also, it can break windows into thirds (1/3 and 2/3) either left or right justified. Also allows you to. move apps from one screen to another easily. The best part about it. - it's free. I have no affiliation with Spectacle.

My solution to having a bunch of windows is having every app full screen and switching by using three fingers left and right. Full screen split mode when two things are needed at once (like FaceTime and google docs), and apps that don’t need to be full screen go on the desktops. I do see a lot of Mac users with a bunch of windows open on their desktop but it isn’t really a problem if you know how to use the laptop :)

Touchscreens have a purpose when your laptop you can rotate the screen around. Then you can - watch videos more immersively when you put into a upside down v-shape and still navigate on the screen - use Powerpoint (or keynote) more comfortably (when you do animations for example) - use your laptop at university to write comments right on the PowerPoint - use certain programs more comfortably in general like anything where it comes to a lot of drag and drop, adjust geometric froms or sizes of objects ( it's super annoying to use the cursor for this after some time)

The biggest issues with the MacBook Air (coming from an apple fanboy) are the name and price, since you can get a underpowered, LIGHTER and THINNER MacBook for $100 more, or you can get a thicker, .25lb heavier and more powerful Mac for the same $100 that you’d pay on the lower end

C2L Redstone Yes, me too. A modern laptop without touchscreen seems out of date. Scroll, pinch, expand, quick touch, they are natural on a touchscreen. Seems awkward and slow to touch a pad, move the cursor from where it is to where I want it, then touch the pad again so I can do the thing that I could have already done just by touching the screen.
