Linux users think about things a little differently than users of other operating systems. Let's discuss some of the philosophy behind Linux, free software, open source, and the mindset of certain sub-groups within the Linux community.

I appreciate your open-minded approach and sensible opinions in this video. I was nearly in complete agreement with you throughout.

Derek, you bring up a great point about Linux users typically being more "do it yourself" and "fix your own problems" - minded. And that's commendable. But it can also be a reason that Linux has such a small share of the desktop computer user market. The people coming from Mac OS or Windows can find it very off-putting to be ignored and/or told to RTFM, when they're trying to solve a problem in Linux. If Linux wants to appeal to the broader computer user space, it might be beneficial to have a more friendly and helpful attitude towards these users willing to migrate to, or at least try, a Linux distro. But if Linux wants to remain an "elitist" OS, that's fine, too. It all depends on the goals of the Linux community in general.

When has anybody ever said you can't use an operating system for ethnic, regional, or political reasons? I never knew that was the thing

I believe that reason alone is why Qubes, Tails and other privacy-focused Linux distros exist, isn't it? So you can use a computer to do research or messaging without leaving any evidence behind for your government or legal authorities when you switch it off.

Everyone forgets(or didn't exist) when software was terribly expensive . I remember when Borland made great inroads in this area by providing cheaper software with simpler user contracts.

It seems now that the business model is to charge monthly / yearly for licenses to use a product. It used to be that you pay one fee to use the product. Now they just keep charging you and you get constant updates. I don't know if this is an advancement or a regression.

@@Scott-jz4xx Software companies (especially games companies) will not be happy just making MORE MONEY, they want ALL OF THE MONEY. Evil corporations (with the most evil being software or software service companies) do not want you or I to OWN anything any more - the "pay once, use forever" model doesn't make them ALL OF THE MONEY, only RENTING everything to you for a regular monthly fee works to that end. And with AI and social media making the general population more stupid as each day goes by, Joe Public no longer learns how to think critically, do proper research and fault-finding, and test and manage things for themselves. And that's the future of the human race in a nutshell.

30:10 Wait , are there really people that don't google the problem with their computer before they ask about it in a forum ? More often than not , in these SAME forums ,the problem has already been encountered before and fixed, with the step-by-step solution being there

Free software is important where corporations can buy off politicians and create monopolies. It is also important to keep companies like Microsoft from colluding with hardware companies to force their software on you.

You can't really have free software if you don't contribute. Developers have families too and you should at least contribute to the distributions and applications you use. Otherwise all the Developers will work for corporations so they can feed their families.

Source code was available for many projects long before anyone formed a philosophy around hacking.

The last word in your comment (which gets my comments deleted by the stupid algorithm if I use it) originally had nothing to do with computer code but was a term that described "clever engineering", particularly around model railway layouts and functionality in US universities during the 1960's. Some have even used the term to describe "clever" techniques of using the original Alexander Graham Bell telephone network in the late 1800's. So you're not correct - the term long pre-dates the advent of computer source code.

@@jeremymcguire7069 "Some have even used the term to describe an artless use of an axe, saw, or any other cutting tool in bygone times." Sure, and if I wanted to continue your pedantic game of verbal semantics, I could also mention it as a term for "a certain way of riding a horse" or "a particular type of rough sounding cough" - but I've better things to do with my time, especially as I'd inevitably end up outmaneuvering you as I always do. "You knew which usage I intended." No, you don't know what I know because you have never met me in person, and nobody has invented "Telepathy over TCP/IP" as of yet. Next time we meet, do try to keep up and stay on topic - there's a good chap. Discussion closed.

I love the colors in the room. Like dt's head is so shiny I feel like settings a frame as my wallpaper. I wonder how this will affect my pyywal colorscheme? Probably looks amazing Edit: used the frame @ 0:26 it does look pretty good and it goes along with dtos qtile config quite nicely (even the wallpaper) I think dt makes for some really sexy wallpapers
