As a Linux user for a year, I will tell you what it looks like from my perspective. From the very beginning I have been using one distribution, Linux Mint, and I am absolutely enchanted by it. At the same time, I have realized what the situation of games on this system is like. I tested various games, newer and older titles, and noticed that it is true that most of these titles can be played, but there are certainly limitations, e.g. there may be a problem with RTX, but it doesn't bother me because I am from an older generation of gamers who pay so much attention to graphics. I don't care, when it comes to other uses of the system and reliability, I have no objections here because it works much better than my previous Win10, which from time to time haunted me with bluescreens for no apparent reason. To sum up, if you just like to play something from time to time and you are not a pro-gamer who has to play every premiere title with all the available bells and whistles, and you are looking for a system for everyday use, then this system is for you, otherwise just give it up.

For gaming, I was OK with Linux back when Proton didn't exist yet. I was OK with it because I just looked for games among those available for Linux, and I still had more games than time to play them. If you want to play all the latest competitive online games for Windows, though, then you have to use Windows even now. If you just want enough good games to fill your play time, then Linux can work for you, especially with Proton available.

I have been using Ubuntu for more than a decade now, and in my new position they allow me to directly work with Linux. While I can do most of the work with Linux, there is still some work I have to do in Windows virtual machines. For me working on Linux is a matter of consistency, and solid user experience over machines you can say of your own (sadly, I can say this today).

It's really impressive. I keep underestimating just how good it has gotten. It's not perfect overall... but often it actually is perfect, and occasionally even better performance than windows. Gabe is my literal hero. I actually played one game last year which ran perfectly on launch day in linux, in windows it had a crashing bug related to alt-tabbing out, no such problem in linux.

So I COMPLETELY disagree with you. The only issue is a select few games using Easy Anti Cheat. But thats it. Everything else just works. It truly does. But it wasnt always like this. Then I got a Dell Inspiron laptop, used Windows 10 on it and then switched to Linux Mint when its HDD slowed down. Then later I got a Thinkpad on which I had used Fedora, Win10 and Ubuntu. And I haven't just been distro hopping, I kept on working on various projects. These machines took me from school to college. In my new PC which I just built yesterday, I decided to give Win 11 a try and so far it is good. Honestly, with my limited experience, I don't think that it matter which OS a person is using. It is what they are accomplishing using their tools which matters the most.

It just gives me a much more stable and performant experience, where everything works as expected, granted, with a little tweaking, but the linux desktop has gotten worse at this, where I found myself having to troubleshoot a lot more, mostly due to many third party proprietary software I need to use doing only the bare minimum to support it and maintaining their code poorly, but also because I'm on an nvidia optimus laptop. Sometimes they are just two reliant on software will only fully run on windows, in which case I try and help them with their problems so their system runs more smoothly. Other times, especially when closer to hand to offer support, I encourage them to switch over to Linux and giving it a try, always with the safety blanket that they can go back to Windows if they wish to. So far those people that I have switched over to Linux are only to happy to carry on with their setup. It's simply down to different horses for different courses. A truism that is often forgotten.

well been using windows 10 elegant gamer edition 2019 for years, would say its the best windows os for gamers even say its the number one HEAVY debloated os out there which brought me to my issue where theres no windows defender neither the option of windows update for security stand point using that version did give me the same performance i got from linux mint which surprised me from the fact its a windows os i did install linux again few days ago since all the things i have on windows is also available on linux too but in the first hour of using linux mint 21.3 had few freezing issues which made me go back to windows 11 atlas edition that version of windows 11 did give me the vibes of a stock windows 10 os performance but something telling me to give mint another chance and dive deep there and fix the freezing issues dont know maybe it beat windows this time

Yes... Gaming experience in Windows is much better than in Linux but... it is not because "Windows is better for games"... it is because "Games are developed to run in Windows"... If games were developed for Linux... Linux would be the best OS for gaming... and games would be better too because Linux offers better performance and "infinite flexibility"... that's why Linux is used on 500 of Top500 super computers...

@@gigantoad3261 I don't think it's about market share. Old Net/Sys Admin here.... To tell the truth... There was one initial main-reason that I switched to using Linux as my Main Desktop OS (way back in 2006): PERFORMANCE!!! In the early 2000's, multi-core CPU's were just starting to come on to the scene. But, were not really affordable until the late 2000's. So... Linux to the rescue. Running an OS without "performance sucking" anti-virus was awesome!!! Even to this day... When I get someone converted to Linux, they are astounded that anti-virus software is not needed. I'm not a gamer; so, Linux fits my needs perfectly. It did take me several years to finally ween myself off Windows Software. VM's kept me going during those years. Now... Would I ever go back to Windows? Probably not. Unless... Windows, itself, became a Linux Distro with NO-BS and Microsoft became an Upstanding-Company for the masses. Who am I kidding? That would never happen. LOL!!!!

Best tool for the job is also the way I think of the OS. But that is focused more towards convenience, which are not the goals that the GNU/Linux project is trying to achieve. By using GNU/Linux many people are fighting for freedom to use, study, distribute, and modify software and the OS they are using. These people usually identify themselves with the ideas of Richard Stallman (an American free software movement activist and programmer, who has described those terms and ideas, most notably in the GNU General Public License - GPL)

You could use Windows server 2022 as a game pc with lot less spyware, since it is designed to be a "Secure" OS, and you pay for that privacy. I do not want to trade my private data for ease of use or compatability such as with Win11, so I use ChimeraOS for gaming and Mint for all other desktops if possible and window server 2022 if I have to do windows programing running in VM

So no, it's not Linux vs Windows it's only windows and if you need linux for something run it from a USB or dual boot it at best. But Always have a windows. What I want to do is twiddle and fiddle and install the most perfect distro and use emacs because it's fast and use a terminal because guis are stupid and then go back and install a different distro and modify its kernel and then swap in a different sound system and set my terminal so that the emacs uses pig latin and then go in and twiddle the window manager so that it uses a different buffer management scheme and then fiddle with my IO system so that it uses a different buffer management scheme and then install a different distro because it has a different command line. Does Windows let me do all that? No, it does not.

I play retro PC games, modern games, and do some work, and these three operating systems fullfill my requirements perfectly, especially with extra tweaking and optimizations on top! I don't really have a favorite OS between these three, they are just all super good!

I'd say the comparison between linux gaming and windows is similar to comparing, say, the nintendo switch to the XBox One (with the exception that there are no exclusives). There is a big library of games that work out of the box, but not all of them do (or work at all). That's just a reality. I say as someone who does all my gaming on linux and no longer even runs a dual boot. It is just a reality of gaming on linux. Which is not to say that it's bad. It's better than it's ever been and a lot of us are quite comfortable gaming on linux and never feel the need to touch windows. It's just that Linux Gaming still has a big "Buyers Beware" label on it, and that's fine.

"Modern AAA titles, if you're a huge gamer, then you're going to be using Windows. There's just nothing else out there....people don't want to hear that." You're *mostly* right? If you're a gamer who wants to be able to play ANY game, then yeah, it's Windows you're after. That's probably what people don't want to hear. The more refined truth is that both Windows and Linux have issues with games periodically. The real limitation might be people restricting themselves to one operating system at a time. I switched my daily driver/gaming PC to Linux in May, at that point effectively every game I had ran on Linux. When Starfield and Cyberpunk 2.0/Phantom Liberty came out, for 2-3 weeks I had to dual boot into Windows to play them because there were Nvidia driver issues preventing them being playable on Linux. Baldurs Gate 3 though, immediately playable on release. I have the luxury of having zero interest in anything remotely resembling competitive online gaming, so never have to deal with anticheat incompatibilities. The equation would change for competitive online gaming. In the 6 months prior to that, I'd also had 2 games unplayable on *Windows* (Cyberpunk, again!, and Forza Horizon 4). In the year, with 4 instances of 'unplayable games', the score was tied Linux 2, Windows 2.

Well im not enchanted by Linux!!!!!!! YET. I toy with it but if linux is to be the next best, the gap between windows and linux needs to get closer. Gamers make up a huge portion of people who would like to use linux, but there is a huge investment in windows games that are very popular for windows not available on linux. Solution: The gap to make windows games more accessible on lunux would be a huge step. We are talking about a crowd that will never use the terminal and need the transition more seamless. Prebuilt scripts, if possible, for each game or app would be a huge plus. I play Farm Sim 22 and im sure there are enthusiastic people out there that could come up with a script to make that transition painless. I love the idea of Linux and the way to transition is getting better but not quite there yet. Thanks for your very informative vids.

At home it's linux and at work it's windows. I don't try to promote one over the other but I do tell people that want to try linux to get an extra HDD/SSD to install it on and "dual boot" using the boot screen and mess around with it without dual booting from the same drive, or just use a live usb with persistance, to try linux.

You can really only switch over to Linux 100% if you don’t need gaming on Windows or specific programs on Mac (and or if it doesn’t affect your job). Linux is a great option for private personal computing, building and maintaining servers, and just having an os (I know Linux itself is just a kernel ) that’s 100% yours. But Linux isn’t perfect for everyone.

I really want to transition away from Windows, but the constant struggle with compatibility and driver issues keeps pulling me back. As a power user, my priority is a computer that just works without the need to tinker with the operating system. The problem is that Windows is becoming increasingly unfriendly with its anti-consumer practices, such as bloatware, pushing the use of Edge and Bing down our throats, and not to mention the intrusive spyware and telemetry. On the other hand, Linux is generally free from these issues, but it introduces its own set of challenges, particularly in terms of compatibility and the functionality of certain software that I rely on from my Windows experience. It feels like I'm caught between a rock and a hard place. There's just nowhere to go right now.

As a gamer that dabbles in the occasional multiplayer game, Anti-cheat is what would keep me off linux. This is a game company problem though not really a linux one. a lot of them have linux clients, and the company has to get support enabled for linux on the anti-cheat company's back-end, and most simply won't do that. So yes, unfortunately the problem with using linux as a gamer... isn't linux itself, sadly. It always surprises me that the cultiness is still around which tools you use. It's been around since the beginning, and should have died off long ago. As long as it's not just straight up malware, nobody should care. If you truly like the idea of Linux and you're at least, very mildly "tech-savy" [you know 0 about programming, but you can build a pc and install windows on your own without looking up the internet], the best way to make the transition to Linux is to have a friend, even if online only, who 100% loves a linux distro and would be happy to assist you 24/7 and you can just shoot your questions and get through the first 30 days of basic console use, ideally with you yourself using an older outdated pc that wouldn't run W10/11 well, but this is too much of an idealized scenario, very few people are gonna do this. The problem if you're on your own is: Linux pros, even if they're nice people and want to help, will just get tired of reading your basic questions, the thing is that when you're posting your question about changing a desktop environment, customizing the theme icons and stuff like that, it may seem harmless to you, but the people capable of answering those questions have seen that question 20 times that very same day, and its very likely that if they want to be nice about it, they'll just ignore your question and move on. This is the short end of the stick of Linux, the greatest beauty of Linux is its inequality, someone who mastered linux code as much as possible is going to outright be in a completly different direction from a Linux noob, if you're a skilled programmer and you love Linux and its idea, you'll enjoy your way through it like a game, but if you're...not that, your journey is going to be disproportionally worse, and the thing is, only 10-20% of Linux users have the knowledge on how to do x/solve y problem , so 90-80% of Linux users need help but only 10-20% can give help, is just never gonna happen, Linux is never going to be mainstream, the steamdeck isn't mainstream, the steamdeck is tiny tiny niche with a lot of compromises, and if you tried running the steamOS on proper desktop hardware you'd get what we're already seeing, which is that normal desktop computers have more glitches and some games even run worse than on the steam deck. I am a total Linux noob still, i will never stop trying Linux once or twice a year, i will try Linux again this year, 3rd year now, i NEVER ignore a post that i can help with and i never make the guy asking for help feel like a burdain, but a lot of times i just couldnt help someone because i cant replicate his error and a google search for his issue doesn't solve his issue, it's happened to me too. Linux won't become mainstream, but what of it? at least it will keep its soul, Linux users and content creators who wish Linux went mainstream should take a look at windows, what good has being dominant been to Windows? it certainly made microsoft money, but Windows is disgusting and its only getting worse, if you think that Linux wont change if it had +2Bi users, i got a plot of land on the money i wanna sell you.

I stopped using windows after my hardware constantly would fail {I have a rx 6800 and a ryzen 5 7600}. My entire os would glitch out with occasional static flashes, apps would either crash or lag. Finding the solutions to my problems with windows 11 online was like trying to find a needle in multiple hay stacks. Then the nail in the coffin for windows was the fact that they're trying to force ai into their os, chat bots, stalking each keystroke and bogging down your performance with it. I had to download some sketchy debloating tool just to get some of my performance back. That does't even include all the random services they have running in the background sucking up resources. Finally let's talk about the driver support.... AMD drivers on windows are so bad that it didn't matter if i downloaded adrenalin or pro they all caused stuttering, flashing and crashes. So upon installing Fedora I was met with the complete opposite, now i did have to install controller drivers... but that was the only real hard part of my experience, games like rdr2 have better performance on linux than i could ever imagine on windows. That's my take on this!
