Why is the Lion-Faced Dakini Simhamukha one of the most popular practices in times of peril - especially when facing any crushing supernatural or psychological threat?
Why do many lineages of Tibetan Buddhism turn to her practice in times of disaster, bad luck, illness, or any form of negative karma ripening?
Why is her mantra often the first one chanted when a yogi practitioner feels threatened by any looming or deadly evil, curse, or bad luck, even black magic?
We answer these questions, and more, in this feature presentation on Simhamukha, the great Lion-Faced Wisdom Dakini.
Despite her wrathful, exotic form, Simhamukha, the Snow Lion-Faced-Dakini is a fully enlightened Wisdom Dakini.
Lama Tsultrim of the Tara Mandala International Buddhist Community described Simhamukha "as a powerful remover of obstacles and as Queen of the Dakinis."

She is among the most popular of the Enlightened Buddhist Dakinis - in part due to her exotic and ferocious appearance - and her rapid activity in helping her practitioners.
Like many wisdom Dakinis, she is a super wrathful form of Wisdom, a fully Enlightened Buddha, and therefore considered ultimately an aspect of Tara.
Her appearance is deliberately ferocious, with a snow-lion face. Why the lion? The lion represents not only courage and ferocious power, but single-pointed concentration and alertness. As the great Sage Milarepa once taught:
When you run after your thoughts, you are like a dog chasing a stick: every time a stick is thrown, you run after it.
Instead, be like a lion who, rather than chasing after the stick, turns to face the thrower.
One only throws a stick at a lion once.
Lion-Faced Dakini is the "only once" deity. Those who call on her only once can be assured of her help. Her help is wrathful, however, so expect an energetic, unexpected result.
But, a definite result.
Both Shakyamuni Buddha and Guru Rinpoche are associated with the "lion."
Dharma speech is called the "Lion's Roar."
There are many profound reasons Simhamukha appears with a lion face, including her mantra, which is like the roar of a lion - powerful and irresistible.
Snow lions are mythically even more profound. They roam freely in the high snow mountains without any fear, symbolising the wisdom, fearlessness and divine pride of those dharma practitioners who are actually able to live freely in the high snow mountain of the pure mind, without being contaminated by delusions.
They are kings or queens of the doctrine because they have achieved the power to subdue all beings with their great love, compassion and wisdom.”
Her mantra's fourteen syllables averts all evils and obstacles.
Although you can chant her mantra without empowerment, it is helpful to receive transmission from a qualified teacher when you have an opportunity. Generally, to chant her mantra, the main requirement, as always, is Bodhichitta and the intention to benefit all sentient beings.
The mantra is:
ah ka sa ma ra cha sha dah rah sa mah rah yah pat
COMMENTS and COMMUNITY: Please be respectful in your comments, guided by kindness and Bodhichitta. We do appreciate corrections, however, we will not approve comments with corrections that are unsupported. If you wish to state "this is not correct" (bearing in mind it may be correct in one tradition and not in another) then it is important to INCLUDE YOUR CITATION (Which teacher or Sutra are you quoting.) Simply saying "This isn't true" is not a publishable comment. Why isn't it true? Or why do you disagree? We will also not approve comments with disparaging comments, regardless of the context. We will not approve any political comments, as we strive for a positive, spiritual community. Thank you for understanding!

Simhamukha saved my life at the end of last year. Her visible form manifested at a time when I was facing severe blood loss and facing the depletion of merits I had accrued. My own anger and disgust had grown too powerful and I turned to other magical practices. Even with an intent to help others, I’d allowed my will and intentions to become corrupted. Guru Simhamukha stopped my untimely death. She reversed spells being directed at me. She scared away my evil friends and put me straight onto the path I was once on. Thank you Buddha Weekly for everything you do for others! May you all have such glorious, long-lives.

When H.E. Zazep Tulku Rinpoche was providing a Highest Yoga Tantra Empowerment in Toronto, I spontaneously saw him as Cittamani Tara, flanked by Simhamukha and Vajrayogini, sitting on a lotus throne, in Yulokod. 🌸Instantly, wisdom arose: all the three yidams were emanations of the same Supreme Mother Prajnaparamita.🌸

What is the relation between Tara and Sengdongma? If she doesn't come under 5 wisdom dakinis than how she is a wisdom dakini?
@BuddhaWeekly
@BuddhaWeekly 11 ай бұрын
Thank you for your thoughtful question. This is often the way it is presented in teachings from the various lineages. But, in general terms, in Mahayana Buddhism, generally, Wisdom is considered to be the "Mother of all Buddhas" while Compassion (or Skillful Means) is considered to be the "Father of all Buddhas." In this way, Tara is the Mother of all Buddhas, as she is the form from which all the female Buddhas emanate (as she represents the activity of Wisdom (ultimately this is Prajnaparmita, or wisdom). Likewise, Avalokiteshvara is the "Father of all Buddhas" as he represents the compassion of all the Buddhas. In TIbetan Buddhism, there is a very old saying "All males are emanations of Avalokiteshvara" (Chenrezig) and "All females are emanations of Tara" (Wisdom). Likewise, often in the teachings, you'll hear a teacher say, "Vajrayogini is an emanation of Tara" or "Sengdongma" is an emanation of Tara. Ultimately, of course, there is also no male or female. In the symbology of Vajrayana Buddhism, the Five Wisdom Dakinis are the Dakini-aspects of Widom: Karma Dakini (Green for activity), Buddha Dakini (White for pacifying), Padma Dakini (Red for power and magnetizing), Vajra Dakini (Blue for wrathful activities) and Ratna Dakini (Yellow for accumulating activities and auspiciousness). These are all considered to be the Dakini aspects of the five consorts of the Dhyani Buddhas. Karma Dakini, specifically, is Green Tara's Dakini aspect as wisdom consort of Amoghasiddhi. Equally, Ratna Dakini is the Dakini aspect of Yellow Tara (Wisdom) in the Ratna (yellow) form. Padma Dakini is Kurukulle, red Tara, etc. Likewise, the Five Sengdonmas (Karma Sengdonma (green), Buddha Sengdonma (white), and so on) are the very wrathful emanations of the Wisdom Dakinis. (The symbology is usually, the peaceful consorts are seated like a contemplative Buddha (or in the case of Tara, with one leg thrust out), the Wisdom Dakinis are semi-wrathful and dancing or standing, and the Sengdomas are extremely wrathful versions of these Dakinis. But, ultimately, all Wisdom emanates from Tara (also from Prajnaparamita, but that's a longer explanation, so, refer to various features (many) on buddhaweekly.com for more on this topic, or specifically in the Tara subsection: buddhaweekly.com/tara/ ). All of this is understood in the comlex of the reasoning on Shunyata, (Emptiness of ego), the doctrine of Buddha Nature, and so on. Ultimately, Enlightened Beings, when they understand Buddhist Wisdom, understand that all beings are Oneness - if you strip away the artificial construct of our physical-world conditioning and cultural training. Once ego is gone, we are all utimately aspects of One -- this is a deep topic, under logic of Buddha Nature (all beings have Buddha Nature -- when all the "poisons" (attachments, anger, and so on) are stripped away (through meditation and other practices) we realize that ego is artificially constructed. There's are encyclopedic Sutras on this topic and more in the dissertations. The enemy (which is quaintly called demons or poisons) are usually the attachments generated by our egos such as anger, jealousy, hate, craving, and so on. At the ultimate level, therefore, we are all Tara and Avalokiteshvara - the nature of Wisdom and Compassion. Only in the relative reality of Samsara, we cling to notions of "me" and "I" and "she" or "he." To help us in relative reality the Buddhas emanate in countless forms (this is the subject of chapter 25 of the Lotus Sutra, where it is explained Avalokiteshvara can emanate in any form, etc.). Until such time as we attain Enlightenment we seek refuge in these various Enlightened forms.

@BuddhaWeekly
@BuddhaWeekly 9 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching. They are similar in attributes/appearance, although Lion-Faced Dakini's face is a snow-lion, which is highly symbolic in Tibetan Buddhism. To symbolize her Enlightenment she has a third eye and stands on a lotus and sun disc, and, to symbolize Shunyata from which she arises (i.e. emptiness) her body is the color of space (black). So, best answer is they just appear similar, but they're not the same. Wisdom Dakini's can take any form as a skillful means. For example, Tara can appear (and often does) as multiple forms, from gods to humans to cannibals (i.e. Palden Lhamo), and even as Lion-Faced Dakini -- depending on the needs of suffering beings. The Enlightened Essence, in this way of thinking (relative reality) can appear relatively as any deity or being (and is, in fact an aspect of that being, since in the nature of Shunyata all beings are Oneness). The attributes and appearances are for our benefit. In this case, Lion Faced Dakini Simhamukha is an emanated aspect of Wisdom (as she is a Wisdom Dakini), and ultimately therefore an aspect of Prajnaparamita. In kindness, BW
