Sensitive viewers should avoid watching this video.
The Othawa Lion pride catch a rival lioness (Long Tail Ximhungwe female) and break her spine. The Majingilane male lions are also involved.
The Long Tail Ximhungwe lioness was the last adult in the pride and had been trying to keep the remaining sub-adults away from the Majingilanes
The fight is a territorial battle as the Othawa pride wanted to extend their territory due to having new cubs. Having watched the Ximhungwe lioness grow up from a tiny cub this was a very emotional scene for me and it took a long time for me to actually decide to re-watch and edit this clip. Unfortunately all the movement of the lights affected the camera focus but despite the poor footage it's still an important piece of the story of these prides. Male lions often fight over territory but it is less common for the lionesses to do so, this was the second lioness taken out by the Othawa pride in the space of a month, reducing the pride to just the four sub-adults. You can see that the Othawa lionesses had already crippled the Ximhungwe lioness before the males got involved, at that point she would already have been too seriously injured to survive.
This was obviously not the outcome I was expecting when I started the 'Following The Pride' and 'Rebuilding The Othawa Pride' series...
Filmed in the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve, Greater Kruger National Park, South Africa

About Rob The Ranger Wildlife Videos:
The purpose of the channel is to show what it is like to experience seeing wild animals on an African safari. Nature Documentaries are often highly edited to tell a story, wildlife safaris are not, and the idea here is to show the wildlife sightings the way they were seen. Safari tours in Africa are generally suitable for all ages and this channel can be considered an educational channel about incredible nature, some scenes in the nature videos may be more graphic than people are used to but this is the reality of nature and is what you would see if you were present on such a safari in person. Safaris in Kenya, South Africa, or any other African country are an unrivalled experience for anyone with a passion for nature, wildlife photography, and travel. Hopefully the animal videos on this channel can provide a glimpse into what the nature experience is like and encourage more people to take a wildlife safari one day. Make sure to subscribe and enable ALL notifications!

I apologize for many of these disturbing and disrespectful comments I’ve read, Rob. Knowledge is a gift and the same applies to manners. A lioness lost her life but they complain about the camera work and that says it a lot about them. The Othawa pride is one of my favorites and the same about the majingilane. Nature is harsh and after so many years it never gets any easier to witness such sad moments. Thank you for sharing your videos with us, Rob.

Very brave lioness went down like a true warrior. She took on 2 at once even though she was at disadvantage not just due to her smaller size but also due to the male lions huge manes. Male lions evolved to have manes to protect themselves during battle from killing attacks anywhere on the neck. They have a free natural built in shield basically so lionesses and other predators are at huge disadvantage trying to take them down. Other male lions on the other hand know to go for weak spots.

No, behavioral scientists call this "redirected aggression". It is initially the intention of the lionesses to wipe out female opponents; one of the main interest of the males is mating. No matter if with females of their own pride or with some of foreign prides. The back jumping male is aggressive, but he sees a lioness who is a female in brighter moments even of such a fight, and so a male lion, in this case his brother, is the bigger trigger of aggression. He wants to fight, but his instinct says "No! Female!". And that's why his brother gets it. This is also called "displacement behavior". They're wild fighters on the one hand, but they know it's a female. Two very contradictory drives that lead to a new, apparently senseless behavior. Like cheetahs, for example, chasing a baby gazelle that instead of running away stumbles to and snuggles with them. The cheetah is in hunting mode, but only chases fleeing objects, the baby gazelle is clearly prey, but does not flee. And so they sit on their butts and inspect the vastness of the savannah, or fumble about half- hearted, instead of taking advantage of the situation. Classic shifting behavior, like this male lion who gives it to his brother instead of the female, who is a female after all ... And that may very well be the reason why the male who stays next to her doesn't finish her off. I would even go so far as to say that the strange lioness was in heat and the one who stayed close to her was her lover. And that despite all the brutality, the males were somewhat prevented from attacking her further for this reason (despite everything happened just moments before). And indeed: When their own lionesses were gone, they apparently did not attack her any further. And maybe the brother was a rival for the other because basically every male lion would like to mate, and that's why he was attacked. Confused instincts in purity, I would say. Fight for pride on the one hand, and don't kill a lioness (in heat?) on the other. And since cats are able to be VERY jealous and unforgiving, I would almost guess that the triggering moment for the Othawa lionesses was that the foreign lioness made about with one of their guys ...

I think instinctively she knew you and knew you cared seeing her grow from a tiny cub to a full grown adult lioness, even from a distance. It must be so hard studying and basically living with these prides, knowing their growls & roars, seeing them with THEIR babies grow up teaching them how to be a pride member & hunter. Unfortunately, in the wild, nature takes its course from illnesses, cancer, fighting for territories to just old age. I DO think all species have their way of mourning as we do but it’s shown very differently. Take solace, if you can, from how you had a part making her life a better one. As an RN, I understand life and death. It’s still hard no matter if you’ve been in your profession 1 month or 40 years. When you stop feeling anything, is when you should find another job. Thanks for bringing this and other videos sad as they may be. ❤️❤️💔🦁

I have seen many times a mother calling for her cub for days not eating and just devastated , This was a coalition takeover ? Remember seeing it I believe , There was a lone male who got out since he had lost his brother of coalition partner ? Pretty hard to watch especially knowing them since their cub days , That other male that intervened was on his side or ? Don’t have to answer but I am curious , Kevin

When this male lion was choking the poor lioness, there came another male lion attack this male lion @2:18. It was not a friendly fire, but a sense of compassion towards the lioness. I think that compassionate male lion tried to stop his brother from killing this lioness. He might be thinking that just beating that lioness up was enough, not killing her. There is a video on KZfaq capturing a lone nomad being beaten up by a coalition of 4 lions when this lone nomad was trying to join these 4 lion coalition as a team. When 3 of the lions were attacking the lone nomad, the 4th lion stepped up to attack his own members twice. Obviously, this 4th lion had a compassion toward the lone nomad, as because he understood that the lone nomad was just trying to join them and not showing any aggression at all and thus not deserved to be severely beaten or killed. These 2 are the most compassionate male lions I have seen so far.

He wasn't choking the lioness. He was in an awkward position because he couldn't get her right paw dug out of his forehead. Go back and watch closer. And think about where her head would be in relation to where his head is. Let alone you never see him choking her. They were stuck together. He was trying to get her right claw out with the least amount of damage. He was already done with her by the time his bro came from behind. And after seeing many many lion interactions in person and on YT, this is definitely a display of the brother saying "enough is enough." Of course, his brother thought he was still beating on her too. He didn't mistake him for another lion and he wasn't trying to hook up W/lion in competing pride.

It's fascinating how male lions often don't finish their victims quickly like other cats but let them suffer while they roar or show supremacy, even going so far as eating them slowly or simply lying next to the other lion while it dies as we saw. We also see this behaviour when they snap the spinal cord and stop fighting after that.
