I think he adjusted his game appropriately with age. He can walk around the pitch most of the time, and turn on when needed. He’s really good and effective doing that. As long as he is healthy, I see no reason he can’t play at 39

Replacing Messi is impossible.. The players will always look for him in tough situations and listen to him more than some new kid.. Even if he gets so old it becomes a disadvantage, you cant stop it.. You can only rebuild once he's gone, with whatever is left..

@@vlad3858 Ehh, nobody is saying it can't be the top scorer. The best player can often be the best player. But usually that's reserved for players that are more than just poachers like Haaland. For example, if Harry Kane had scored as many as Haaland, you could argue he was the best player on the planet because of his all around game. You can't say that for Haaland. Ronaldo for example when he was at Real Madrid had more skills than Haaland.

In the crucial games like KO's and league deciders Haaland simply ghosted. If Haaland have only one job , he should be doing that extremely good manner. Haaland has one job as a goal poacher , he also gets the best service in the world from Man City players , so we expect him to deliver. Julian Alvarez gets lesser minutes and he also averages good number of goals in Man City , he scored in the semis. Being 39 in 2026 is not the same as being 39 was in 2006. With the advanced technology and the biometrics and yada yada, he'll be able to perform. Tom Brady showed that the mental side of the game is as, if not more, important than the physical. And no one has a better football brain than Messi.

My friends playing a Quarterback isn't the same as a football player that has to move while he has ball on his feet is not even close in Messi's case yeah he better be fit enough to move in 2026 because when he gets the ball he has to move he can not walk around with NFL the Quarter Backs doesn't have to move that much all they do is scan and release i have seen Brady play yes he barely moved all he did was scan and release the ball on the right moment and time and he was fantastic at it credit to him but with Messi is a total different view. The difference between Messi and Haaland is....Haaland wasn't the most important player for Man City's victories in the UCL....but he certainly contributed in winning games. Messi on the other hand was Argentina's hope & he delivered each and every game he had to when teammates and fans had lost all hope. Yeah, although the styles are different, at his core Haaland is basically a newer, younger CR7. Messi is playing for the Copa America. Now if they win that again, I personally believe he will play the WC. Right now the AFA has purchased land in, coincidently Miami, so they have training grounds for Copa America and WC. That also leads to making Messi comfortable. Winning changes everything and as long as they continue to win, he will play. Every player is dedicated to pick up his defensive responsibilities and for the first time in a long time, we have a coach with no ego and can build unreal team chemistry

Messi did say it was his last world cup, but he said it through logic, thinking that because of his age it surely would be the last. After he won it, he announced he wanted to play as a world champion with Argentina. Now at least, he wants to contribute to help Argentina qualify again, and probably also play the next Copa America. If he keeps feeling good, playing good, and having a club team to play for, then there will always be a chance he goes into the 2026 world cup, maybe not as a starter, but imagine subbing him in for the last 10 minutes, penalty shootout, having him as the leader in the dressing room...

I believe Scaloni is already looking for a playmaker to match half of what Messi already does. It's difficult but not impossible, even without Messi Argentina has good prospects to do something similar. But can Messi be replaced? About the Ballon D'or I must say Haaland has a great chance of winning it. Halland only has 3 more G/A than Messi, whilist having played 3 more games than Messi. They both won a domestic cup, they both won the league, they both won the biggest trophy in world football, one for their club, the other for their national team. It's very close, but at the end of the day, the world cup weighs much more, and when it's Messi, even more. Messi will win it.

Messi is my favorite athlete ever, and I sort of agree but, the amount that Messi gets kicked and has to play every week almost all year is incomparable to those other guys he gets kicked and fouled every game for many years because he is too good if they don't foul he will destroy them and that takes its toll. boxers fight maybe once or twice per year, brady was protected by a lot of rules to keep QBs safe and played 16-20 games all year. Messi gets kicked every single game and plays once or twice per week. his pace has been declining for many years and by 2026 his body could be broken down too much to play, it's a long way out he should focus on Copa America and seeing how he feels we shouldn't expect him to play that world cup as fans especially when he said this was his last one.

Haaland was Good but was not decisive... good for the youngster but Messi did the impossible after everyone felt that Arg would loose after the match against SAUDI.... Imagine the stress in a Tournament which is once in a 4 years and the worlds most respected versus Champions league where Haaland was quiet in decisive states.

As a Messi fan, it was a cautious game vs Ecuador but you really can see that Messi really is human and father time is always undefeated. Argentina FC and Scaloni should experiment the young talents for the near future. Dybala, Mac Allister, Alvarez and L.Martinez. We as Messi fan should be cautious. Messi does have some left in the tank but we should understand the future holds.

No, it's not that deep. He is human so he will decline. But he has not declined anywhere near yet compared to his 33/34 year old self. What you saw vs Ecuador was a guy who has played 14 games in 45 days, and asked to be subbed off because he was tired. He could of had a hatrick in that game with the three shots he had. Maybe if he was more rested he could have gotten better shots off in those positions. A 25 year old Messi would be tired after playing that many games let alone at 36. You'll know when he has declined. It could be in a month or in two years. It will be obvious.

Everybody knows what the future holds. As long as Messi is still dictating games he's going to play, simple as that. We saw how reliable the players you're talking about were in the world cup. Dybala's form is shot and he has injury troubles. McAllister and Alvarez are solid additions. Lautaro turned into prime lakaka and higuain all in one in the world cup so much so that he could've very well costed them the world cup. The only constant in this game has been Messi, whenever his team needed him he stepped up and then some. Him, DiMaria and Dibu are still the pillars of Argentina.

Look it'd be INSANE for Messi to play at the next World Cup at age 39. BUT, his talent will STILL be so extraordinary that for maybe 20-30 minutes, he can still be a Top 5 player in world soccer for 30-45 minutes and that's BECAUSE he stopped relying on his pace since leaving Barcelona, the period in which he won the Copa America, Finallissima, and World Cup. I'd say, if at age 39, you bring him on for at most 1 half, or maybe just the final 30 minutes on the game and he can still be this Messi, the Messi we see right now.

Mbappe won the WC in 2018 right?? Didn't win the Ballon D'dor, didn't even make top 3 lol. Modric won it because he performed well in WC and won a CL that season as well I believe. I think the votes will be closer than people think, but the nostalgia of Messi finally winning the WC and how well he performed, will give him the edge vote wise. In pretty much every World Cup year, the ballon D’Or has either gone to a player who won the World Cup or a player who won the golden ball at the World Cup. Messi won both as a part of what is seen as his crowing achievement. He will win the ballon D’Or and he should win it. Haaland will have plenty more chances to compete for it.

If your comparison is just purely based on goal contribution alone than both Messi and Halaand both have more than 60 goal contribution for Messi it's 61 and Halaand is 66 and both won 3 trophies and Messi turned up in the major games for Halaand he was missing in champions league final and FA cup final...so whoever wins it there is no biasness because definitely Messi made a statement to win it

Thing is, back in 2006 Cannavaro won the ballon d’or simply because of winning the World Cup and being very good for his country when his season at his club was not good at all it was moderate. Ronaldinho won the champions league that season and didn’t win the ballon d’or. No doubt Haaland had a splendid season but had his country played in the World Cup, it might have been a different story.

World cup is the Pinnacle of football have to go through vigorous qualifications just to play on the finals. It's just not the continental tournament. It's a festival for 1 month not only for the Europeans but also for the remote villagers, town in Africa , Asia and South America. World cup Final the biggest stage biggest game with the spectators of 2 billions compared to 200M for champions league and Messi and Mbappe served the feast to the eyes of the world. World cup is not just a game it's a history it has made players to god like Pele and Maradona. legends like Zidane and R9. There is no comparison not even a counter arguement who should win the Ballon dor after highest g/a contribution, highest MOTM awards, golden ball and cap it off with the world cup. This is typical Lionel Messi style even at 36 years of age he’s still scoring goals for Argentina and scored another wonderful free kick goal and as his illustrious career winds down us as footballing fans should continue to witness his greatness rather than continuously trying to find ways to criticize/discredit him because once Lionel Messi retires it’ll be a sad moment for football and will appreciate him if he’s no longer playing. I think Lionel Messi will play for Argentina in the Copa America next year he has 1 more international tournament in him, I don’t think he’ll make the 2026 World Cup he’ll be 39 by then and more importantly he would probably have hung up his boots and retire from the game altogether, he literally just won a World Cup last year and has pretty much competed football and he can enjoy the game without dealing with pressure and he’ll continue playing for Argentina and enjoy his football for his national team.

The thing is, even when as he continues to age and can't run anymore, you can stick him anywhere and have him just pass the ball because there's literally no one capable of making the passes he does. That's why he's the goat, if he doesn't score he can make ridiculous passes, makes assist. Etc.
