Watch 4 Lions with #Sparky the #Robodog at #sydneyzoo testing animal enrichment possibilities using #robotics in a #Zoo. A world 1st from #Sydney Australia for #RoboEvents and it's new research program and the #unitree #robodog. Very special thanks to the Curators and keepers to help guide the test.

Well, humans dont go in there with Lions in the first place, so... And even if, once they got a meal pinned, something like this will not distract them for long rather than make them just tear it up because it appears as competition trying to take away whats theirs.

Cheetahs were certainly scared of this bot, when it charged them, because to them it is an animal which has no fear of them or any sign of self preservation instinct (which could probably mean it is either very dangerous and self-cofident, or sinc and crazy, both of which means it's better to stay away from it to not get hurt). Add an electric shock unit, so the robot could emit light, loud, sharp noise, smell of ozone (which is similar to the lightning for animals) and could "bite", and a pair of those could totally scare away the predators from an injured person. Add a tranquilizer dart gun, and you can safely neutralize any potential threats for the person. Also, they are, probably, made of metal (or hard plasatic), which is somewhat equal to thick bone, so pawing, clawing and biting them would have little to no effect and would totally be not plesant for the teeth, and they don't smell or taste like anything edible or killable, so I assume this which will probably also make the predators think twice before attacking it.

I've had cats that would leap straight up and back hissing, and I've had cats that would just lay down and maybe even look bored. Those cats would take their cues from the humans in the room. I had a Maine Coon Cat who was Mr Cool. I never saw him get phased about anything, even when my significant other would get in his face and pretend he was going to stomp him. @computerjantje

Maybe you don't even realize the most important thing you said in your comment. To 'scare away' a potential dangerous animal, you need a real weapon like indeed for example a pepperspray. The robot in the video will never work without a real weapon attached as the animals will get used to it extremely fast and won't be scared away anymore. A good all terrain RC car would do the trick way cheaper exactly like you said :) Even some zoo keepers like gadgets. I can only hope they do not spend their budgets on them.

I love that they were discussing using the robot as a distraction in a case a human was in the enclosure. It's fascinating to think that one day, a robotic representation of an "animal" could be used to interact with land animals. National Geographic has done something similar with a few very very simple under sea robots I believe.

I had a rolling carry-on bag at the zoo once and it made the Sumatran Tiger go NUTS! The tiger stood on its hind legs while peeing all over the plexiglass barrier, it was so excited, thinking the rolling carry-on was some kind of small monkey-tidbit. How can these apex predators not miss the experience of hunting for their food?

So I really don't see a robot the size of that being much of a safety barrier, if the lions take an interest in a downed keeper. ...unless there's so many that they can act as a swarm, and "herd" the cat away. BTW... I've never accused of being "typical" in my thinking, or much of anything else. lol One last thing... Why would you use a weapon on something that's gonna be even more dangerous if it's hurt or injured? Especially if it's something you're supposed to be caring for and protecting?

@@guarddog318 🤔 Could've sworn i said "Distract" .. 🤔 you point out how ridiculous it is to use this as an "obstacle", or defensive weapon. . If you spend any time around cats or any predator, you'll understand they have an instinct to chase. The best use for a robot dog is to distract (bait). Use it to catch the attention of the cat, then have it run away. The cat will chase after it, and victim can safely be rescued. . No lasers, cannons, or exotic weapons needed.

Electrified elongated antenna could provide a defensive mechanism coupled with a highly domineering cadence, and a sharp clacking sound in time with intense colour shifting eyes. That would scare the bajeezes out of them, and if they got close enough, the attacking animal would get a high voltage jolt. they would soon learn this thing is not to be messed with no matter how aggressive state they were in. With a bit of AI programming, this thing could respond quickly to a person being attacked.

The military use a form of this to carry supplies on the front line, its been tested and proven to be a relatively sucessful aid, even offering portable cover for infantry. This "model" wouldn't even stand an infant apes tomfoolery, but I'm sure Boston Dynamics could sell you one of their... outdated military surplus models for precisely your needs. Edit: Oh, Unitree Robotics. The Chinese Robot dog company that's main sales pitch was a "Robot Dog Army". Personally, not robust enough for any task other than being a 15k chew toy, with a 2 hour battery life.

I doubt that the lions see your robot as a potential 'plaything'. Their behaviour is predatory. Not allowing them access to their 'prey' is frustrating for them.
