Here in the US another big advantage of liquid chlorine is that it is tremendously less expensive than granular or tablet form. On the downside liquid is going to occasionally splash and bleach your clothing no matter how careful you are. It’s also prone to leak in your vehicle coming home from the store. And liquid chlorine also loses its potency rather quickly when stored whereas granular is has a long stable shelf life

Hi there, I am getting a very high content of "calcium" or pasy, white residue from a new brand of chlorine granules I have been using (I am in the Philippines and it is very common to cut anything that can be cut with whatever cheap additive they can. This looks like the chlorine has been cut with chalk or something worse as it is causing build up on my skimmer, pump and pipes and constantly leaving residue on my pool floor. I guess to confirm this to a sell that I am complaining to, should commercial, chlorine granules dissolve in water or is it normal that there is quite a lot of "chalky"residue? Thank you.

Is it true that cal hypo for salt water pools is bad? I was told this once by a pool maintenance guy so now I only ever use liquid chlorine

There is some truth in it. Cal hypo does increase the calcium hardness in your pool esp. when you would use it regularly. Inside your swg cell there is already a high pH when it is producing chlorine. Together with the higher calcium it increases calcium deposit inside the cell which you want to prevent. But you could use cal hypo occasionally to shock when you want to lower combined chlorine level. Just make sure you switch off the swg when you are dissolving cal hypo in the pool and switch it on after 24hrs or so. You also might want to prefer using liquid chlorine to shock because it doesn't increase calcium nor does it increase CYA.
