Liquid Soap Making Tutorial - Complete Process and Easy Beginner Recipe

This is a comprehensive liquid soap making tutorial and easy beginner recipe to get you started with making your own liquid soap from scratch at home. This recipe is great for beginners (no volcanoes!), it’s super fast to come together and it makes a nice general use liquid soap, perfect for handwashing, bathing and household cleaning.
Recipe details
700g total oil batch
20% lye concentration for the lye solution (this dictates the water amount in the recipe)
(1% superfat calculated into the recipe)
489g olive oil (70%)
140g castor oil (20%)
70g coconut oil (10%)
597g distilled or demineralised water (boiled filtered tap water can be used but your soap may not be clear)
149g potassium hydroxide (90% KOH - more details about that below)
I added essential oils at a rate of 2% of the total finished soap weight - you will need to calculate this for your own soap batch, depending on how much paste you dilute. You may also want to reduce this amount to 1 or 1.5% - depending on your essential oils and your personal preference.
To make the salt solution for thickening the soap, dissolve 20g of salt into 80g of hot distilled or filtered water. Stir the mixture until the salt dissolves. This solution can be multiplied to produce a larger batch. It can also be stored under refrigeration indefinitely.
This liquid soap recipe makes approximately 1445g of finished liquid soap paste, not accounting for evaporation during the cook. This amount of paste will make approximately 3.6 litres (3600g) of finished liquid soap at a dilution rate of 1:1.5 (1 part paste to 1.5 parts water).
Potassium hydroxide can be best purchased through online soap making suppliers. Google ‘potassium hydroxide’ and your city/state name (eg. ‘potassium hydroxide Brisbane') to get your closest options. Most potassium hydroxide is labelled as 90% pure, so if you are calculating your own liquid soap recipe make sure to enter potassium hydroxide as your lye type and change the purity level as needed in your soap calculator.
I used the app called ‘Soap Lye Calculator’ (android phone app) to calculate this recipe.

Hi! :) To reduce the fumes from the lye you can try freezing your water beforehand. What I typically do is pre-measure my water, put it in the freezer for a couple of hours and wait for an ice block to form. You can also do it overnight. Then I measure my lye and place the lye flakes on top of the block. The reaction is exothermal so it will melt the ice and then I end up with a solution that is just warm but not hot. This way you are not so exposed to the fumes and you can start making your soap immediately without waiting for the lye to cool. It also eliminates the risk that it will overboil and mess up your kitchen. I also regularly make soap with beer and milk by this method - it allows you to use more sensitive ingredients without worrying about burning them. I really like your channel and the way you present your work. Your home is clean and you work in a clean and organized way - it is so satisfying to see. You typically want the lye water and the temperature of the oils to be about the same. Isis usually added not because of the fumes but to keep the temperature from going over 300 degrees which can sometimes happen and that can melt containers depending what you mix it in

Hi! I’m a beginner in soap making. I’m trying to learn but it’s hard sometimes because of the contradictory information. The only type of soap i tried to make so far is a liquid hand soap with a cold process. I try to figure out if a preservative is really needed. Also, i’m wondering if it’s normal that my soap separated with the time. Finally, i’m really curious about why you prefer hot method. Yea, I'm like u know do u, but that's not really making your own handmade soap from scratch.. Great recipe.. I love the dual lye soap paste.. Its uses are infinite, but yeah i agree. They get like a million views, I as a Professional Soap Artisan Just dont get it. Your really not helping other's when u do that. Just my opinion because you teally don't know the science behind any of it, but like I said, it's their life.

My son requested liquid soap and I've been hesitant to even try it because all the books and recipes I've found seem so very complicated. I tried your recipe and method today and WOW! This was so much simpler and took less time than I had expected. I also discovered that I can be much more accurate in my measurements by using grams instead of 0.00 ounces. Thank you!!!

Hey Elly, love your posts on soap making. I've finally made this liquid soap and it worked a treat. Note to self, next time I will use a pot that's about 2.5 times the volume of the total volume of the ingredients. I was stick blending it for about 20 minutes and then at a certain point it started rising very quickly and then solidified suddenly and it was paste all the way down to the bottom of the pot. Fortunately the pot was large enough and only a trickle of froth went down the side of the pot. It's a fabulous soap and when diluted, it looks just like yours. Have tested it with the dishes and washing hands. I will "never" be buying commercial soap again (unless desperate - "never" is such a strong word). Thank you for sharing your knowledge, I have found them very helpful and it has accelerated my learning of this craft.

I tried a double boiler, and this happened, but when my soap paste is all gone, I will be remaking this recipe with a BIIIG pot, over direct low heat.

And maybe a list of your favorite essential oils and clays and why they are your favorites! Curious about oils for hard dish soap versus hand/body soap. Love your videos! Truth is I'm a bit of a minimalist and most of my soaps have olive, coconut and castor oil - there are good reasons for using these though. Thanks, I'll get organised for that one when I can :)

@Lori Anderson she probably didn't see this question here. Redo in a new comment thread. In my opinion it could be done with almond oil, but you couldn't use this recipe . Coconut and almond oil may call for different amounts of lye, or potash. Run your new recipe through soapcal.net. for a start. This is definitely an advanced soap making lesson and I'm not sure how to account for the water ratio.

@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking Demineralised water has had minerals removed so that you are left with H2O. The problem with demineralisation is that it will not remove bacteria or viruses like distilling would. Distillation is a very effective method and will remove 99.9% of contaminants.

Elly's Everyday do the oil properties differ when making liquid soap instead of soap bars? (For example coconut oil is very cleansing but drying, olive oil is gentle with low lather)

This is a great video Elly! Really interesting to see the difference between the two methods of soap making. Thank you for explaining everything so clearly. I’ve watched so many vids about liquid soap making(several times each) and thought: “What?”. Trying to do this from a printed recipe is like trying to knit fog 🙄. I tried your method, and even though my recipe was a little different (without castor oil), the soap behaved and turned out to be exactly like what's in your video. A couple questions. I'm interested in the little chips of paste, and think it would be a great way to give to people to create their own soap refills without having to buy more bottles. Could you use a brine for your original water so the paste already contains salt for thickening? Could you scent the whole batch so the paste already holds the scent?

I don’t like to give bad replies because I hate when people do that to me but do not use potassium hydroxide it can cause irritation and corrosion look it up but you can if u want to give it a try

OMG! Great tutorial and recipe thank you Elly. I’ve wanted to make liquid soap for a long time but had not found an easy tutorial. Most of the tutorials I found needed lots of time to make the paste. I’ve made the paste and the recipe worked as described in the video. We have rain water here so I was not sure if my soap would be clear but it is really clear.

Thank you! A fantastic, easy recipe for first time liquid soap makers. Your explanation throughout was simple to follow, to the point, and not full of “fluff” and filler. You didn’t hold back on your little mistake, but showed how it effected the final product. Gosh, I could go on, singing the praises of this video! This is my fav liquid soap tutorial! I have 2 questions: how important for the clarity is it that your finished paste be translucent-like vaseline? And... would you offer some guidelines for essential oils that will not cloud the finished liquid? Thank you...

Hi, thank you! The paste itself doesn't need to be very translucent, as long as it passes the pH and clarity test, and you use demineralised or distilled water, the finished soap will be clear. I don't have a handy record about the EO's I'm sorry, but if you google this question I'm sure you'll find some answers :)

I made this beginner liquid soap today. My first time ever. I was a little intimidated but being a long time cp soapmaker gave me some confidence. It did volcano and come right to the top but I kept praying and stirring and it settled down. Wheww! I think my element was too hot. Thank you for your in depth instructions. So helpful!

Ellie's tutorials Rock! I have never come across anyone who explains everything to a T. I have made soap for 20 years' and faffed about with imperial measures. Then came accross Ellie's soapcalc instuctions Wow, I have fallen in love with maths after the way she explains it step by step. Thanks Sarah, that was isopropyl alcohol in the spray bottle. I made 100% olive oil liquid soap and it came out nice and thick but it took me three hours to get it to saponify! Really horrible to work with for liquid soap - but you can try it if you want. You can use this video to learn how to calculate the recipe. Hi Elly, I have just recently discovered your videos and absolutely love them! I was just wondering, how long (approximately) would the soap be good for while in a paste and how long is it good for once it’s been diluted? Also, how would you know if your soap went bad?

Thank you Sash, I'm glad you're enjoying my videos! If the paste is stored in a cool place, I think it can be kept for quite a long time, and up to a couple of years in a fridge or freezer! Once diluted, I keep mine for up to a year, but I think they could even last longer. You'll know it goes bad if it changes appearance drastically, or smells off or like the oils are rancid. I've never had that happen with any of my liquid soap batches, they keep very well :)

Hi from South Africa. I have a few questions, when you switched off your stove as the soap was cooked, you still had your pot on the stovetop. Will the heat from the stove not burn the soap or is your stove an induction cooktop? Will it be possible to make this soap on a gas hob? I just discovered your videos last week and I’ve watched most of them. Your videos are a wealth of information. Finally going to tackle liquid soap with this recipe. Thank you for all your thorough information. Really is a huge help.

Thanks Sharifa, I'm pleased my videos are helpful. My cooktop is induction, so it cools down quickly, but I think a small amount of residual heat from gas or electric cooker would be fine. Yes, you can definitely make this on a gas hob, but keep the flame down very low and watch the soap closely.

Hi Elly. Today I plucked up the courage to finally make the liquid soap. I had already watched your tutorial twice. So I played it today to work along with it. Everything was going fine until the end of mixing when the mixture thickens up. Instead of being smooth and gel-like, like yours, mine was dry and chunky. Hmmmnn! Odd I though. However, I wasn’t too worried as I prepared for the next step of watering it down. But first I had to clear some space as my work area was too cluttered. That’s when I noticed I had not read the label and used sodium hydroxide instead of potassium hydroxide. Well duh, I though typical of me, “I have made bar soap not liquid soap, I wonder if I can still make it into liquid soap.” So I measured out my water, set it on low heat to melt and went to write an email setting a timer so I wouldn’t forget it. It had boiled over by the time I checked, but wasn’t too bad. At that point I added more water, in total adding 2200 grams water to 1200 grams soap. Much to my surprise it melted nicely and is a beautiful amber colour the consistency of liquid honey. It made just short of 4 litres- about 15 cups. I would love to post a picture to show you the beautiful colour but You Tube doesn’t allow it. Should I send it on Messenger? I am rather proud of it. Oh, and the stainless steel pot I used was incredibly clean and shiny when I was done, almost like new.

Hi Ethel, wow! That's so great! I have never tried to make liquid soap with NaOH, but I know that some use a dual lye method with both NaOH and KOH. I thought it might be a bit slimey and (pardon the yuckiness) snotty if made with NaOH? Sounds like you stumbled across something really good there! Thanks for letting me know that, you've really got me thinking! Yes I love how clean the pots come out after soap making :)

Thank you, yes I have the stove on when I'm blending the soap. Once it thickens though you can turn the heat off.

Elly, I love this video and I've wanted to try making liquid soap for a while and I was excited to try your recipe and technique. However, when I entered your recipe into the soapcalc.net calculator, the cleansing value was only 7, which is low. I'm wondering if I entered something wrong, but I did it twice and it was the same both times. I'm confused.

Hi Amy, there's nothing wrong with a low cleansing value, it's still soap. That just means that it is low in harsh cleansing properties (ie, not too drying). The reason it's low is because of the high amount of olive oil in the recipe :)

Thank you, I appreciate your feedback! Yes, you can add clays, silks etc to liquid soap, but I would steer very clear of any fresh botanical ingredients or purees due to issues with spoilage. Dry cosmetic ingredients should be fine.

If you wear a mask while making the lye solution, you should wear the mask as soon as you open the KOH-Container. A lye solution does not fume, but the KOH-flakes let of some fine dust. I would also advise to use a double boiler. It really helps to keep the suspension of fats and lye together and the soap doesn't get burned.
