Liquid Flavor extracts also have a decent amount of alcohol too. I used talk to this homeless dude who would steal them from the supermarket ( easier to do than in a liquor store) and drink them. Bar Manager here. You can make cocktails with Angostura as a base spirit and it’s even a classic cocktail. You can also do shooters of Ango and it’s quite delicious although kinda expensive compared to other spirits. Doing a shot of Angostura bitters is like a delicacy among bartenders. Someone under 21 would probably hate it though. I didn’t realize you didn’t need an ID to purchase bitters but that makes sense since you can buy them at most grocery stores. (I live in MN and you can’t buy alcohol at grocery stores here) You do need an ID to buy cough medicine though!

This remind when I almost got my military career destroyed over bitters. My leadership came to me and said alcohol was found in your room. I was confused and scared because I was not 21, and ask what they found because I genuinely had no idea what they were talking about. Then my CPT shows me the bottle of bitters they found in my room and I was like ummmmmmmm. With all due respect ma’am you do not have to be 21 to purchase bitters, nothing is illegal regarding my having bitters. She goes well there’s alcohol in here and your not 21, I’m like well ma’am isn’t there alcohol in hand sanitizer, mouth wash, and toothpaste? She tells me that’s different, but then I told her I use bitters to cook, no one gets drunk of bitters. Just like no one gets drunk off mouth wash. Needless to say this ended up getting pushed extremely higher up the chain beofre it was dropped. Edit: To address some comments. 1) Yes bitters can be added to countless recipes, google has plenty examples. 2) I’m aware you CAN get drunk off mouthwash. What I was implying is “people don’t” in the sense that it’s not a common thing lol. 3) This happened during what’s called a Health and Wellness Check. To summarize, this is when your first line calls you in the early morning usually around 3am. They tell you health and wellness at 4am, formation outside the barracks 330am. Then your unit leadership splits into groups of 2 or 3 and inspects each Soldiers room, and you have to remain outside your door. They claim to be inspecting your room for safety. In reality they are trying to catch you off guard to figure out who keeps a dirty room or has substances they’re not suppose to. For those of you who don’t know, getting caught with alcohol underaged, or marijuana, pills, etc, is pretty much a career ender.

Had this small store in the middle of a friend’s neighborhood. Most odd spot I’ve ever seen a store. Asian family ran it. We had barely hit puberty. All we had to do was buy some chips, leave a 20, and go out around the corner. We’d come back and there would be a small box of alc waiting for us. Good times

In a supermarket, I asked a passing assistant to direct me to the angostura bitters. He'd never heard of it. I asked to talk to the liquor dept supervisor. Turned out he was the supervisor. Five minutes later I found half a dozen bottles on a bottom shelf. That said, I only ever use a teaspoonful in a glass of tonic water - an old remedy for an upset stomach. Anyone who can drink enough for the alcohol to matter has my admiration, especially given the price of the stuff.

Being that I had no idea what bitters are, I googled it. Then I somehow ended up on Reddit and down a rabbit hole learning about alcohol laws in the state I've lived in for 2 years now. An hour of my morning passed so quickly lol.
