Having been tasting spirits for over 25 years and reviewing them for more than a decade, I've been asked by a Patron of mine to explain my method of properly nosing and tasting a spirit. So, in this video I’ll try my best to describe the techniques I've developed and the thinking behind it. I'll also be touching on my glassware selection, and why The Glencairn has always been my "go to" glass. The other glasses shown are the Luigi Bormioli Vinoteque snifter, and the Eisch Whisky Glass. The bourbon I’m reviewing is Old Forester’s “The President’s Choice” - Barrel #18. It was aged “9 summers” and bottled at 110.4 proof. This specific barrel was only available at the distillery in the spring of 2021 and retailed at $179.99.
As always, I want to thank all of my viewers and send a special thank you to my Patreon supporters who’ve helped me keep my independence and allowed me to continue this channel. So, if you enjoy this content and would like to help keep it afloat, please join us at www.patreon.com/LiquorHound. There you’ll get a 2-week head start on hunting all the bottles I review - before they launch on KZfaq. You’ll also get add-free videos, be able to message me directly with questions, check out the private review library (which haven’t been on KZfaq), get some secret tips, and can be eligible for my giveaways.
As of January 2022, my current bottle count is over 2,600. I am a Certified Specialist of Spirits and have also been accredited by the Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT). I've been actively collecting for more than two decades and what started as a small basic home bar has transformed (with the help and understanding of my wonderful wife) into this collection and career. Speaking of my career, our new “Saints Alley Bourbons” have hit Total Wine shelves and they've been very popular! We just finished blending Batch 3, and given my knowledge and high standards, you know I’m working hard with my team to keep giving you some amazing releases! Thanks for watching and remember to please drink responsibly. Cheers!

I've always enjoyed spirits. Watching your channel for a few years now has encouraged me to truly appreciate what I am consuming. Most spirit youtubers will add unnecessary amounts of banter in their videos, but you have always been consistently great when analyzing and describing a product for your viewers. Easy to understand and comprehend, and most importantly, very informative. Thank you LiquorHound!

The right glass, the broad reference point that comes with experience, and the nosing and tasting techniques really help, but ultimately you have to have someone like you, with innate affinity and natural ability, to pick up on the most subtle notes. That’s why so many people simply tend to fake it, or else come up with the goofiest and/or snobbiest descriptions. I think in the end it all boils down to enjoying the spirit that you like and the way that you prefer to drink it.

I am mostly a vodka collector. I have tried gin but just didn’t have a palate relatable to go on at the time. I’ve been somewhat afraid of whiskeys for my entire life but more recently taken interest after I found a full unopened bottle of bookers 01/2017 in my neighbors dumpster of all places lol. This was a bright new world for me. What an amazing aroma and the color was mesmerizing. Anywho, I completely enjoy your channel. No clowns laughing at themselves. 🤷‍♂️

What you describe experiencing with the Luigi is what I feel like I experience with the glens. They just don't work for me for high ABV stuff. I really appreciate this type of video. I've never given much consideration to having a dominant nostril. Makes perfect sense.

Superbly informative video. Passed on to me by a friend of yours who is slowly, costing me a lot of money converting me to scotch, the way apparently you did to him! Thanks, helped me a lot on how to taste properly.

Great tips. I try to take just the right sized sip: too big and I can't coordinate it in my mouth; too little and it gets thins out by saliva. I use the wine-taster 'air slurp' method but not to excess as it can make low spiced spirits seem high in spice. Two Liquorhound practices I've adopted are 1) those little breaths in after the swallow, and 2) the little pouch of coffee beans for re-setting the nose. All hail the Hound!

have you every thought about designing a course that comes complete with a kit? I really think that would be immensely helpful and popular course. I would personally be very interested in that.

I’ve owned them, but didn’t find them particularly useful. To me the nose gets lost in the flared glass and the thick lip, just wasn’t for me. Now if you like your whisky/ey with a few cubes of ice, the double walled design comes in handy to prevent the glass from sweating. But if that’s you’re thing, I’d recommend the Duo Glass - as it can hold a bigger rock. And no I’m not sponsored by them, but also have that glass. Cheers! agedandore.com/collections/featured/products/duo-glass
