I find that using a lid keeps the steam in and makes the popcorn a little softer/not as crisp. You can use a strainer or splatter screen to hold the popcorn in while letting the steam out. =)

I had to laugh! You are like a kid with a new toy! To be honest, as a teenager I was babysitting three children for the very first time and was told they loved popcorn while watching TV. So after their pajamas were on we headed to the kitchen to get started! Had everything ready! Everything, but the lid to the pot! As the popcorn flew I was frantically looking for the lid as the kids screamed and laughed with delight! They had a ball while I spent the evening cleaning the kitchen! I was their favorite babysitter after that!

As someone who has been critical of the staleness some of your videos, I really like this one. It's got good information, it's fun to watch, and the real personality of the presenter comes through! It feels like a real person having fun. Such a refreshing change! Even without the lid-off popping, everything is so much more loose and casual. I hope to see more videos like this.

Good idea, pop corn and season your wok at the same time. Ages ago my dad made popcorn in a large steel pot in a similar way. He would shake the pot and also have the lid a little skewed to let steam escape. Thanks for another great video Lisa!

I’ve been using a wok for popcorn for a few years and it works great (first saw Alton Brown do a variation using a metal bowl). But I use one of those mesh splatter screens for a lid. Why? Because you need to let steam and moisture escape so the popcorn doesn’t become chewy.

My wife has been popping popcorn in a round bottom wok for many years. By far out favorite method and used weekly here. Put popcorn in pan, put in enough coconut oil and real butter to barely cover the kernels, put lid on, let pop until done. No shaking, now stirring.

I cleaned it up myself; just thought you'd want to know. It did spray popcorn everywhere, but the fun was worth it. Of course normally, you'd keep the lid on and be able to trap and eat the popcorn! But our experiment didn't actually take long to clean: Picked up all the pieces that flew around the kitchen and composted them, then I got a bucket of hot, soapy water, another of clear hot water, and wiped everything down, and sprayed with sanitizer. We all clean up after ourselves here every day at the Test Kitchen.

Oddly enough, a round bottomed wok on an electric stoves works just as well. It's almost impossible to burn, as all the popped kernels) "float" above the unpopped ones. ie they are lifted out of the hot zone that is just a tiny point of contact. I use my round bottomed wok on a 3 ring gas burner outside, but I make popcorn on an induction cooker with my wok. Only mabe 3cm of the bottom is heated.

Right at 0:24 I have to comment on this video because, "what's old is new again"! LOL Back in my day there were no microwaves, so no microwave popcorn, also no hot air popcorn either. You made popcorn in a large pot, with a lid, with a little oil on the gas stove - electric is useless. With the lid off and with medium high heat you watch the popcorn until the first pop, then the lid goes on and you shake the pot back and forth and don't stop. All the popping will finish really fast then you remove the pot from the stove and open the lid. There's always one or two kernels that's going to surprise you! What I do is mix oil and butter together with salt so its ready right from the pot. Ok, back to the video with this "NEW" way to make popcorn. ") EDIT: Don't let the wok just sit there, you can burn the popcorn. "O That's why the movie popcorn makers have a sweeping arm to keep the kernels in motion. ") The other alternative to this in the 60's was, Jiffy Pop Popcorn, which you can still buy! Although I prefer the pot method.
