This was very interesting. Thank you. I am from Australia. I am currently hand sewing a large memory quilt for my son, which is already quilted. I have a large photo film reel appliqué consisting of 44 photos. I used Matilda’s own ink jet printable fabric sheets which were very expensive for the amount that I was using. There are 5 sheets in a pack for $25 Aud. I get 2 photos on a sheet, so it was an expensive project. As an inexperienced quilter it was all I knew. The photos are beautiful and, on advice from my local quilting shop, I put on fusible web and quilted it on the front. I am currently in Croatia finishing the quilt and I needed to print the label and one photo, using the same printable fabric. The photos weren’t as nice as the existing photos and it appears that there is a slight pinkish hue. Not bad, but it’s there. I had no choice but to use it as I don’t want to take the quilt back to Melbourne (I’ve already taken 18 months.) I’ve concluded that the ink must be different. With my next two quilts for my other children, I will try your method. Thank you.

I previously did a printed label for the back of my quilt- a few washes of the quilt and the label is useless because it faded so badly. I didn't use Retayne, so I have hopes to try that experiment again with better results.

One hour to wash is really long time. I bought a commercial grade Maytag washer in HomeDepot and no short cycle wash. I sold it cause I hated it. I bought an analog Speed queen washing machine at a local furniture store it was pricey $1500 but worth every penny the machine is commercial grade very heavy weight. Thanks to 2 delivery men that installed it. I love that machine can do a wash in 15”, 9”. I think use vinegar rinse. Then I hang dry outside on the line here in tropical Puerto Rico. Clothes dry here in breezy March in 45”. In hot summer 20”.

Hi Sharon, the download is in pdf form and so I don't think it can be changed. I used a program called Inkscape to design this. It is a vector based software and a free download online. You could design your own custom prints for fabric :)
@melanieschulte4261 Жыл бұрын
@@TheQuiltmakerHomestead I am also interested in the process of creating the pdf. I am planning a project to take hand drawn photos and add text, size and print onto fabric to make a quilt and am having trouble with how to create the image (photo and text) for printing. I am learning inkscape and am somewhat familiar with it, just unsure about the best way to design the image with text for printing.

Thank you for this video and sharing your knowledge with us. How do you get the image or text to print to the full size of the fabric? I print fabric labels for my projects and I am looking to use this as an easier way to do that but I want to utilize the whole paper/label size or as much as I can to maximize my printing without wasting any of the fabric.
@kutepookie4 жыл бұрын
Lisa, I think it depends on the quality of the fabric used and how well it was iron on the the freezer paper. I have no issues taking off the freezer paper with prewash premium muslin fabrics.... Thank you for a great video and for showing the difference with and without retayne 😉

Thanks so much for this video. I really appreciate all the time and effort this took. Lisa, do you prefer this method for printing photos for a quilt over using the June Tailor Colorfast Fabric Sheets? I recently rewatched that video of yours and I'm curious as to which method you think works better. Thanks!
@TheQuiltmakerHomestead4 жыл бұрын
I think they are both really good methods of printing on fabric. The awesome thing about the June Tailor sheets is that they are already treated and they work great for stubborn injet printers that won't set otherwise. I will say, I think they are a bit "stiff"....I don't want to say "crunchy"...but they feel a bit different then the rest of the fabrics in the quilt.....but the print stays lol. I like the other method better only because you can use any fabric and the fabric keeps it's normal drape and feel. That may not work for everyone's printer inks/toners so that's a stinker
@jeanetteshannon1373 Жыл бұрын
I wonder if you starched the fabric on the back of the fabric before adding it to the adhesive paper if it would make it easier to peel.

Thank you so much for this tutorial!!! Great teaching! I'm new to sewing & quilting. What kind of thread do you use for quilting? If I wanted to make a t-shirt with this design, Is there a way to adjust the Printable to just sewing machine & text only? Do you use different stabilizers or backing inside of a t-shirt?
@TheQuiltmakerHomestead4 жыл бұрын
You are so welcome Jennifer, thanks for watching! My current favorite thread is from AK Trading Company and you can find it on Amazon...comes in a huge amount of different colors and on large cones. It lasts forever lol. The PDF I created may be altered if you have a PDF reader that you can edit with?????? I think that would require an upgraded version of Adobe Reader maybe??? Not sure. Asking about the stabilizer.....are you asking about t-shirt quilts??? I have a ton of videos on that, my favorite is the Pellon P44F :)
