Portuguese food is defenitely underrated, because it is not very known. So people dont want to invest, I went to a Portuguese Restaraunt in Roterdam and it was super full, most of the clients were Dutch. I would guess that most of them had already been there or came with someone that was there. If you try you will like it, but you need to try it!!

The reason some restaurants don’t want to open yet is they can only have 50% capacity and for that reason they will lose money. In 2 weeks , if all goes right , they will allow more people inside and more restaurants will open !

I could be wrong, but if they open they will have to pay their staff 100% of their salaries and not the government. So it's like you said, huge loss of money. :(

Hospitality is the most affected sector. The Portuguese government should help businesses getting back on track by continuing to help pay the wages. In the U.K. the employer is expected to pay 20% from August and the government tops 6o%. Still lots of job losses expected. The government can’t save every single job...

Portuguese people use them common sense. Is not about money is about to be safe. If you get the virus is a big chance that you don’t survive, so money will not save you. Well done for Portuguese people and God bless you all and your country. As well the rest of the world 🌎

Bacalhau, was introduced by the Vikings when they used to come to Lusitania coasts to take salt and even to explore salt themselves around here more than 1000 years ago. Salt was very important back then to preserve dry food, including salmon. And salt was also money, salary. So, very early, bacalhau became the most important dry fish in Portugal. And the biggest and best pieces were preserved for weeks and months for important occasions like Christmas, once in Advent and Christmas eve, Christians were not allowed to eat meat. And so, the Portuguese used to fish it in the Northern seas of England, until the British did not allow it any longer. Anyway, we also used to fish it in Terra Nova. Terra Nova was a Portuguese possession, even before Colombo reached America. The cities of Labrador (also the local dog breed's name) and Saint John, were villages called Lavrador (the name of a Portuguese sailor) and São João. Portuguese also made a village in Maine before 1492. It was a secret ,as many others, Australia was a secret, per example. And so, Terra Nova became our main source of Bacalhau. Terra Nova never was officially Portuguese. It was on the Spanish side of Treaty of Tordesillas. So it was kinda given to our allies British, who renamed it to Newfoundland and misspelled Lavrador, and the Portuguese could continue to occupy it for their main interest: fishing our dear bacalhau. As we all know, Newfoundland became administrated by Canada. The Canadians fished there so intensely, that many fish species started to disappear and the main occupation of the island finished completely by law, turning entire cities into ghost cities since the 1990s. And of course, the Portuguese were not allowed to fish there any longer. That is why all our dear codfish is imported. Yes, it is a national dish, but we don't have the fish. About the way we prepare it, it is simply dried under the sun with salt over to help the process and to keep worms and bacteria away. It is a cure, a pre-historical pre-cooking process to preserve food. It really cooks it and when well made, people can eat it just like that, but it's too salty. Codfish is also a national dish for the British with their fish and chips, but we have a friendly joke for them: they don't cook it, they spoil it :D

Hilarious! Antonio is a class act and definitely adds to the Stay Classy blog. As for the Italian / Portuguese cuisine juxtaposition - to me, its a bit of a false one. I've had Italian meals done homestyle that are fantastic, and I've had Portuguese dishes that were "passable". I've had mom and pop Chinese where the flavours were to die for, and I've had Persian "fessenjoon" that I constantly dream about. It's all about the quality of the ingredients, and the love and execution put in by the person cooking in the kitchen. What is to note, Portugal possesses an old culture, and old cultures have refined cooking and cuisine using the local or accessable ingredients over many generations. Joen's and Amalie's trip to Northern Portugal to discover more food and wine and the ditching of Michelin star restaurants in favour of the more local is truly the start of a gastronomic adventure. Stay healthy guys, thank you for supporting the mom and pop places in Portugal, and blessings and strength to all looking to reopen.

Portuguese food is underrated due to the fact that it's usually not the type of food you can eat fast and be done with it (of course there are exceptions). Portuguese food needs time, both to prepare and to eat it. Most popular Italian or Spanish influenced countries food are food that is super fast to make and super fast to eat (Pizza, Tacos, etc...), thats a reason that makes sense in my head to justify this. Another one is the influence of Portuguese people in the USA, which is tiny compared to the Italian/Spanish influence there. In the mid 1900s millions of Italian people migrated to the USA, Latinos are also currently migrating a lot there. There's a lot of influence because of that. While portuguese, we are so few, and USA never was the top destination to migrate to.

He has a pure American accent. He says that he was born in Lisbon, but I wonder if he lived in the US for sometime. I’m curious about his history

Finding your VLOG is great. We are already booked to come in November from the UK. Keep us up todate with your VLOG and as soon as UK sorts itself out we know Lisbon wants us. We may come earlier (as well) if we can.

Hi Classy Couple, It's heartbreaking to see so many places closed down. If not for Covid-19 my husband and I would be in Lisbon now. I do hope globally we can ramp up quickly. I don't think any country will see loads of tourists until international travel restrictions are lifted. We are experiencing the same thing in the US. Unless it's drive-through, take out or outdoor seating restaurants are having a very difficult time.

OMG I am so jealous... I live in Cali, the closest I got to a real meal out was take out salads in the garden at the BIg Sur Bakery, it was like goosebumps happy but nothing like what joys you are seemingly experiencing... That beer moment at the courtyard cafe was like a war film after peace was declared, for some reason I thought of the film" Life Is Beautiful", which has nothing to do with it, but it feels like we are all in a war situation, not a virus, much more than that. I do so hope for more adventures from your world, it's channels like this that have helped us all keep going in the face of the unthinkable. I cannot wait to escape America and get back to Europe and explore the old world. I can only hope all those cafes are not further victims of this nonsense. Be well : )
