Great reaction! Great track! Shut your eyes during the Jon Lord solo and you're actually flying through space! Been listening to this for over 50 years now and it still gives me goosebumps at the end with the crowd not knowing whether to clap or not - until some brave soul starts it off! Then you realise that the whole thing was recorded just to see how it went - and was sent out there completely unedited! Agree with those below who mention "Wring That Neck" as another example from the early days with so many live versions of it - but none of them the same! And for me the ultimate studio track was "Stargazer" by Ritchie's Rainbow - unfortunately it was so perfect it was almost impossible to improve it live. Again though, in agreeance with below in the live version of "Catch The Rainbow" off of "On Stage" as the perfect example in comparison with the studio version.

That's what I love about all the live recordings of the early 70s, you get everything, which happened on stage... pure, raw, no corrections. I remember as a Teenager listening to Mountain's (I think it was guitar solo of Twin Peaks) and my friends and I were highly impressed, when one string of Leslie West' s guitar broke and he just kept on playing. Later records were "accused" of Studio corrections... Thin Lizzy, UFO, Judas Priest😮 have you seen my list of live recordings, which were different than the Studio ones?

I have to say that it takes a lot of stamina to play drums and keep going as long as Ian did I also can't imagine how anyone can think that another drummer could be #1 over Ian, I never listened to a better live band than Deep Purple and that includes Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin I found that they were better in the studio but missing something live. I also must add that Ian Gillan is my all time favorite singer he is a beast. The bass player was Roger Glover he joined at the same time as Ian Gillan

I'm late to the party with this one, but my suggestion for a track completely transformed as a live version is Strawbs doing Where Is This Dream Of Your Youth? from their live album Just A Collection Of Antiques And Curios. The original studio recording (on their first album I think) is carefully crafted psychdelic-folk, but the live version is much heavier with Rick Wakeman (pre-Yes) doing a stunningly wild, extended Hammond organ solo; easily as good as this one by Jon Lord.

Actually just thought of a really good, and quite obscure example of a studio song that was radically expanded and developed live. From the Welsh Band, Man. They released a song called ‘Spunk Box’ (I know) on their second album, ‘2 OZs of Plastic with a hole in the Middle’ which was around 6 minutes long. They produced various live versions of the song and renamed it ‘Spunk Rock’. The most well known and best versions are on the live Greasy Truckers lp recorded at the Roundhouse, I think it was 22 minutes long and ‘Jam Up/Jelly Tight / Oh No, Not Again (Spunk Rock ‘73)’ which was on their Back Into the Future double lp. That was around 20 minutes I think. Both are fantastic.

The song didn't "grow into" this elaborate version. The instrumental add-on had been used for a while as a 'controlled improvisation' at the end of "Mandrake Root" in live shows. The section had some variations, especially in Blackmore's shenanigans, but overall the structure and melodies remained unchanged since introduced in 1969. It's still one of the more memorable pieces played by Deep Purple. Cheerio.

Good evening Jim, Good to see you again. Great album; made in Japan. I heard it, back then, at a friend of mine and I was hooked. Bought the Made in Europe and taped the Japan one. We copied everything of each other on cassette. We weren’t that rich as teenagers. Space trucking’ is a great great song, especially this live version, but my favorite one still is Smoke on the water. This is indeed your first Deep Purple song 😳.

Guten Morgen Will, I hope you're back to normal health, whatever that is in our age ... sometimes when I'm in good shape, I really sprint through Düsseldorf HBF to catch my train and feel like 30 or so ... on other days, knees and back are hurting and I feel my 63. Fortunately I'm blessed with a great immun-system, based on several facts: DNA - my father was a POW in Russia for almost 5 years and he was almost never ill until he passed at the age of 91. We were outside from age 5 until I started working at 19 .. no matter if sun or rain. I had my last flu in my late teens, later one angina ...And I've been going to sauna regularly every week for 5 years and I feel like my body is trained to react correctly to heat or cold. I've not missed one day at work because of a cold or similar ... the few days I missed since 1979 were because of sport injuries ... Kreuzband kaputt, Achillessehne gerissen ... some Magen-Darm-Infekt, which I got from my son, when he was a baby ... and then the "wonderful" experience of 3 Darmspiegelungen ... this kind of cancer is in my mother's family ... good luck, all 3 were negative....ok enough about Krankheiten, let's talk music: I don't listen to Smoke on the water by myself, if it's in the radio, ok, but other than that maybe some 100 times too much heard 😆 In my mixtape #1 was Fireball by Deep Purple , maybe my favourite studio song 🤘 ... and thinking of you as an expert, I'm looking forward to your comment on my list of great live songs, which I posted today 🧐

@@rudolfbecker4313 Gutentag Rudi, Me an expert 😜. Don’t worry, I will comment on your list. Yes I’m back to normal health, thank you. I’m one year younger than you by the way. I was born in a mine town west of Aachen, next to Herzogenrath. The mines were fully operational back then and the air was filled with coal dust. Not to good for a child’s lungs so I developed a nice chronic bronchitis that lasted through my childhood even though we moved house to the north of Limburg province. Every flu or cold I took part in. Flu vaccination wasn’t available then. I got rid of the bronchitis due to a two year penicillin cure but I still have a exercise-induced asthma due to the damage of my lungs in childhood. In later years it is worsening bit by bit. I can take a hike and walk at around 5-6 kmh but only of flat terrain. In hilly terrain I walk a lot slower. Cycling is no problem with an e-bike. I mainly use the lowest support setting. I hatte einen Herzinfarkt for elf Jahre wegen erblich erhöhtes Cholesterol, Gelenkschmerzen (Artrose und etwas ähnliches wie Fibromyalgie) und das kommt von der Seite meiner Mutter. Yes, I got the best of both worlds. But all the rest of my internal organs work excellent; I get checked every year. So my overall health is quite good. My father survived three concentration camps during the war. He worked at the Dutch railway and was forced to work in Germany. Once there was a railway strike in the Netherlands in protest against the way the nazi’s ruling and the Dutch railway workers in Germany also strikes. They were all put in concentration camps. My father survived but kept nightmares about it for the rest of his live.

@@palantir135 Hallo Will, sorry for not writing any earlier, but I didn't get a notification of your answer .. I think it is because it wasn't a new answer, you have your original answer "bearbeitet" ☹ I'm glad to read, that you call your health quite good, even though you've gone through lots of different Krankheiten ... and the Herzinfarkt sounds most scary to me ... that's really one thing, I'm most afraid of ... Seems like our fathers didn't have similar lifelines, but both lost lots of valuable lifetime. As I said before, my father was caught in Russia - Siberia - and he worked underground and was buried alive once and like your father had nightmares of this. So we can be happy to live in a peaceful part of the world even though the development of wars, conflicts or what so ever is frighening. I sometimes feel like don't watch news anymore, don't read any newspapers no more ... all this "pulls you down", gets you bad mood... and I hate bad mood ... Ich möchte einfach ruhig und zufrieden leben und dabei ein bisschen Spaß haben 😉🤘 Will you write the comment to my list ... please ? 😄 have a nice weekend

@@rudolfbecker4313 hi Rudi, No problem at all. We say in the Netherlands: Jeder trägt sein Kreuz im Leben. I think the German phrase is the same as ours. I’m afraid for the future too. Ultra right wing and even fascist politics is on the rise worldwide. People just don’t learn from history. Democracy is in danger, especially in the USA and if they win Europe will be on their own, if the EU survives of course. If not, we’re doomed. I commented to every music list of yours so far, as I know. Are you referring to a new list? Of course I will make my comments again. Knew that I could rely on Rudi. This is indeed a classic (though I'm one of the few that rate the live version of Dazed and Confused from Song Remains the Same) but others of that ilk include the Dead's Dark Star (off Live Dead) and all those mentioned in Rudi's list (I'm afraid that the Kraan and The Outlaws tracks are new to me) though I'd substitute for Strange Kind of Woman the Deep Purple in Concert versions of Mandrake Root and Wring that Neck if you have 35minutes and 50 seconds to spare.

Hi Ken, thank you for your friendly words ... and I forgot LZ on my list 😒 how could I ? About Kraan I can tell you it's a german JazzFusion Band, maybe a little less jazz than Return to forever and a little bit more rock ... there'll be a request sometime next year. And of Outlaws Green grass and high tides it has to be the version of the live album Bring 'em back alive : kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mJNnZbR5x8jXeZ8.html 3 guitarplayers , thousands of notes ... I like this kind of Southern Rock ... Once I saw Molly Hatchet live - they are another guitar army and during one song, the 3 guitarplayers were lined up at the front of the stage plus the bass player plus the singer playing air guitar on the mic stand ... awesome... unforgettable memories ...

As good as this is, I prefer the versions from Deep Purple at the BBC in 1972, and the one filmed in Denmark in 1972. A lot of paople don't seem to look further than Made in Japan. The extended rondo jam dates back to Mandrake Root from Shades of Deep Purple. Wring that Neck is possibly an even more interesting extended instrumental from Deep Purple. My favourite song that was extended live is probably Catch the Rainbow by Rainbow of which some amazing versions exist.

Wow, so far there's only a handful of subscribers outside of Europe and the Americas. I'm also a fan of Deep Purple since 1971, when my older brother bought In Rock, which is still my favourite studio album. Fun story : my brother and I wanted to show our parents, what great music it is, so we played Flight of the rat to them because of the drum solo. Being finished they just said, ok , can we get back to normal music 🤣 But that didn't stop my brother and me, he nowadays has about 3000 - 4000 LPs, don't know exactly, my CD collection is 1800 plus 600 LPs, I started earlier on CDs than he did. Greetings from Germany Rudi 🤘
