Jason from Minnesota, a listener of TMR, calls in to explain how the show helped him dodge Right-wing media. Sam Seder talks about the show's format, and the Majority Report crew joins in on their appreciation of its focus on policy and history. The MR crew also talks about Dark Brandon and whether Joe Biden or his staff are alluding to it in the recent staging of Biden's speech. The MR crew also talks about the road to fascism.

I just want to say you guys saved me from going down a pretty dark path on KZfaq, I don't know how KZfaq does it. Just like throws right-wing stuff at you, all the time like it just wants to radicalize you, and I don't know how I think, I just one time an algorithm saw your along with all the other stuff that was trying to get me to watch and you guys came up one time and it was so refreshing, especially right after January 6th. I was so just disillusioned and just mad and like I felt like when I found your show it was so refreshing.

I watch exclusively left-leaning content but I still get bombarded with right wing ads for Daily Wire, Fox News, etc. It doesn't matter how many of them I tell youtube to stop showing me, or how many I report for pushing hate-filled and outright fallacious content. They've got a massive pool of resources that lets them overcome the algorithm for ads. That's how it always has been and always will be; the far right has obscene amounts of resources to push their garbage while complaining about being the underdog truth-speakers constantly threatened by the mainstream media (you CAN'T get more "mainstream" than Fox News) and the "liberal/woke/progressive/socialist/communist/ agenda." Even if all you view is leftist content, you can't escape the disgusting anti-humanist garbage enabled by the far right's deep pockets.

I recently learned to "watch" those tiresome ads. From my understanding, the right wing ads are targeted towards people that watch center and left wing content; However, the adsense revenue goes to the channel you're watching if you watch the ad all the way through. Yeah, a few years ago, I was an apolitical person that was recommended a lot of Ben Shapiro and Steven Crowder videos. Probably didn’t identify myself as a conservative back then, but seeing how the right-wing ecosystem has developed today, I’m glad that I got out of it. I still watch these commentators of course, but I just use it to inform myself of what their beliefs are, nothing more. The MJR are doing a very valuable service.

When he said that the algorithm pushes right wing content, he’s 100% not kidding. About a month ago I was looking for a *bread recipe* and the 6th video was from The Daily Wire, about Ben Shapiro’s take on Uvalde (no one asked for that & in that moment I certainly didn’t). KZfaq has such a strong incentive to make sure right wing videos like that to get clicks. They will push it on anyone!

This is wild to me. Do you think it’s geared more towards men? I just haven’t noticed this in my algorithm. Granted I’ve been watching progressive content for my whole time on KZfaq…. But still. @heyidaroo

@@ChardeeMacdennis339 I may have been more susceptible because of the progressive content I watch that often critiques him, but honestly, a quite large percentage of Ben’s clicks come from rage clicks. My male cousins might click on his videos because they believe in that stuff, but everyone in my household might click on those videos to hate watch & rage comment (which is why I make sure to *never* click on videos from any those channels. The only way I find out about anything Shapiro says is through channels like TMR) His sister has a KZfaq channel here and while she’s not as popular, she is very good at leaning into ragebait content.

I'm not sensitive like them. Eww can you believe how cringy they are?". I didn't fall very far down that rabbit hole but I can definitely see how addicting those feelings and thoughts of self-aggrandizing could be - especially to young men who feel inadequate, unimportant, unnoticed, or forgotten. Then, the slide into gamer gate would be very easy, followed by the rest of the hate watching bigotry that KZfaq has to offer, finally ending in strait up reactionary and nationalistic content.

I almost went down that right-wing rabbit hole, though surprisingly, KZfaq was barely involved in that, though it did serve well in pulling me out. Before, I was...well, I consider it to be center-right, in that I espoused quite a few of the conservative talking points, but I hated "pro-lifers" and wanted universal healthcare (the latter, I was completely open to the form it could take). As far as KZfaq went, about all I saw was PragerU, and I was falling for the same bait and traps that most do at first, the whole, "Okay, this sounds sensible" and all of that (no Shapiro, Walsh, or Peterson, though - even then, I could tell that they were full of sh^t). The worst aspects of me then was that I had dipped my toes, if not my whole feet, into Christian Nationalism - I was never as loud or obnoxious or generally hateful as they blatantly are today, but I was at the starting line for that. What started pulling me away from that was, ironically or not, my work experience. I had bought into that bootstraps BS, and doing work that I loved at a place and for bosses that I _HATED_ put the first cracks in that. Five years at that place, three of which were just filled with ever-growing levels of abuse, would play the biggest role in breaking those conservative and especially Christian Nationalist leanings I had. Watching videos that showed how my position was only a dime a dozen enhanced that breakage. If my work experience was a water cutter, then the left YT videos were the sand that was added to the water to speed up the cutting. After that experience, I was left jobless and adrift for a while, until I ended up with Amazon (desperate times, okay). My two years there ground what remained of my previous five years into complete annihilation, and it was during this time that I started delving into leftist KZfaq, or at the very least I had double-checked those PragerU videos I saw and realized how much they were BSing me. I do not remember which channels I started with when going more left. I only know that by the end of my two years at Amazon, I had committed to more-or-less all of the biggest left channels then: TYT, Ring of Fire, Secular Talk, Jimmy Dore (back when he at least SOUNDED like a leftist - I noped the f^^^ out when he started going anti-vax), and TMR (though I do remember TMR being the last one I got into then). It has expanded further since with A Blue Dot in Texas, Beau of the Fifth Column, More Perfect Union, and the like. Lately, it has been TMR and Beau that have been serving me well, especially whenever my MAGA relatives tried to give one of their talking points (and no offense to you, TMR, but I got and still get more mileage out of them with Beau - I guess his image helps). Regardless, as much as I am ashamed to have almost been set up to become a MAGAtard, I am grateful that it was nipped in the bud, and TMR certainly played a role in that.

I like Beau and A More Perfect Union, but I haven’t heard of A Blue Dot in Texas. The right and the left, at the moment. Are both dealing with the same problem among those of us who came up after Reagan, the economy and legal system works way better for the rich, and leaves the rest of us with less and less stability and actual investment in the capitalist system. The big difference between the right and the left is what each wants to do with these hard times the majority of us are facing. The right tries to trick people into thinking that the economy sucks because of some moral failing on our part, and then they scapegoat the poor, immigrants, and other marginalized groups. The left actually looks at what policy solutions will actually work, and how to actually use the levers of government to benefit the majority of us. The right is all about misdirected feelings of anger and hate. While there are some on the left who also have anger and hate, the left is also driven to actually do something about the systems that harm us.

it's actually REALLY crazy how strongly KZfaq pushes users towards the "alt right pipeline." sometimes i'll watch someone like Sam or David Pakman do a short piece on some insane clip from a Tim Pool show or whatever, and search for and watch some of the source video (on Tim Pool's channel or wherever it may be) just for the amusement factor that watching right-wing brain melt unfold in real time often brings - and *immediately* my KZfaq recommendations fill up with more Tim Pool, Steven Crowder, The Critical Drinker, I mean it just FLOODS my recommendations. Yeah definitely good to hear the shout out for 3Arrows, he has done some brilliant work on analysis of dismantling USA and it's fascist convergence with Germany in 1930's. As a expat Brit living in Australia, i watched it go through a re-run of thatcher years i had already been through happening in Australia in real-time, and watching the USA is like watching history repeat all over again to an even darker European time and people in other countries can see it, but the level of denial-ism and the direct effect of USA style anti left rhetoric is piercing through even the sanest of countries at the moment, i see people everyday popping that red pill and echoing the anti left ignorance of the USA, it's frightening.

Good on U! Far from being embarrassed, I would argue that true growth & maturation involves the ability to look inward (& backward) @ who U are now & who U were then & B capable of reassessing the things U believed to B true & unquestionable -- even your most cherished ideals & core beliefs. As for myself, I grew up in the Bible Belt (Pennsylvania) & was practically spoonfed the Religious Right conservative ideology on a daily basis. Dissent & deviation from "the mainstream" opinions in that region was so unacceptable that whatever doubts or questions I had that could challenge The Way Things Ought to Be were met w/ immediate hostility & condemnation. In my case, it was after moving to California & enrolling in college that I could finally feel safe about exploring what was outside the conservative "bubble" -- & discovering just how much information had previously been withheld from me. One of the things that helped me become resolutely liberal is that conservatives keep claiming to own the moral high ground ... yet consistently fall back on rhetorical tapdancing, intellectual dishonesty & outright censorship whenever their policies, positions & ideology come under scrutiny. Being a conservative would mean expressing support (or giving silent consent) for such ethically bankrupt, morally reprehensible & downright deplorable behavior ... while being a "centrist" would mean implying that one somehow judged conservatives to B no worse than liberals (& liberals to B no better than conservatives) despite the fact that only 1 side of the political spectrum keeps coming down unfailingly against the causes of gender equality, racial justice, workers' rights, scientific integrity & the separation of church & state.

I found TMR when they were a part of those few shows in the "TYT Network" back in the early 2010s. Of course I initially was pulled in with TYT (when it had people like Dave Rubin and Jimmy Dore on their roster for some reason), but quickly felt like I "outgrew" that specific format of sophomoric moderate-progressive posturing in general. So I bounced around to other shows within that network; Midweek Politics (now the David Pakman Show), Secular Talk and whatever else was there. I didn't pick TMR right away because aesthetically it was an eyesore, lol. Long before Pakman was able to "steal" TMR's panels. It looked like something that you'd see on public access back in the late 80s or early 90s or whatever. But eventually I landed on this channel. And I think I just happened to find a random Matt _Binder_ & Mike _Brooks_ (M&M) Monday or something, and the level of intelligence while still being absolutely fkng hilarious, on top of Binder's legendary infectious laugh, had me hooked. Out of all of the above mentioned shows though, I still don't mind Kyle's, but his whole schtick got kind of old with me quick. As he's gotten older and matured, he's mellowed out a bit, but what annoyed me about his whole personality and posturing before, I feel definitely serves a purpose when it comes to reaching people similar to the caller in this clip. I think having people like Kyle on Joe Rogan's show is absolutely essential. And although I don't really watch Pakman too much anymore, having him on Rogan serves it's purpose in a similar way even though he's more of a "centrist-lib-progressive" figure imho. But something about TMR... There's just substance there. And I do feel that *that's* why Rogan would never have Sam on. We all have known for years that Rogan has been cosplaying as some kind of centrist independent bro, when he's low-key been known as the "Gateway to the far right" the whole time. Someone like Sam completely shatters the entire worldview he pretends to not have, but oftentimes can't help projecting. Kyle's whole disposition resonates with Rogan's audience and possibly himself. Pakman is more of a lib figure who is kind of looked at as a "safe" kind of personality. People like Bernie and Dr. West are both just phenomenal at articulating progressive ideology in a way that resonates with conservatives, on top of being insanely popular public figures. Ben Burgis was on, but was relegated to mostly complaining about *cAnCeL CuLtUrE.* Something that Rogan's audience of MMA dudebros perpetually whine about for like... no reason whatsoever. Anyway, we all give TYT a lot of shit, but fact of the matter is that for people like me it was an important stepping stone and introductory point for progressive politics. Both liberals and progressives can resonate with it. It was interesting seeing Ana become even more progressive the more her and Michael Brooks became friends and that whole journey. Yet, TMR is where it's at. It helped me find my voice and effectively be able to articulate my beliefs in a way that can make people understand. The first half interviews are unmatched in my opinion, and half of my bookshelf consists of books authored by many of those guests. Anyway, if you made it to the end of this, enjoy your day and no matter what you're going through in life, you're worth the world. *RIP MJB* ✌🏾✊🏾🙏🏾🖤♥️🖤♥️

@@ChardeeMacdennis339 it is pretty bad I can tell. Because as a bisexual man, who only watches queer KZfaq channels, channels with bisexual energy, science channels, athiest videos, and progressive leaning deep dives of society and culture.. And despite all that KZfaq keeps recommending me Ben Shapiro and Andrew tate shorts. The algorithm realizes that it's easier to bate conservatives and woo believers much more than it is progressives. So essentially naturally it will promote the content. I don't think KZfaq is evil, I just think KZfaq is designed to create addictions.

I'm also on the team of this guy, back in 2016-2017 I was mostly watching anti sjw videos and that led to Peterson, Shapiro and Crowder content, and I found myself making the dumbest statements to the people around me, over the year, I saw them getting dismantled and realised they don't really debate the opposition but more less informed people who can't debate or converse with them, so they would always look good and that's when I discovered Sam and realized how ridiculous all of their points are and I finally feel sane again

I agree with the overall sentiment I'm seeing in the comments here, MR is an incredibly valuable show and I love how informative it is. I was never in the right wing camp, I was a liberal, but starting to watch MR after my friend recommended it gave me a resource to become much more well informed on history and current events, because I had still always felt liberal media wasn't giving me the whole picture because certain things just still didn't make sense, and that also helped me understand how much right wing and reactionary thought is laundered in liberal ideology too. I'm forever grateful to this show for putting me on a path to greater learning and understanding and ultimately greater empathy, and I'm always so glad when I see other people being helped by it and learning from it too!

I almost was flushed down the alt-right toilet as well. The algorithm started showing me Crowder, Shapiro, and Peterson when I was mostly apolitical. I'm glad I seeked out differing opinions because I don't know what would have happened if I let my self get swept away. After seeing you strike fear into the heart of Crowder with the bait and switch with Ethan, I became a regular listener to TMR. Thank you for everything you guys do!

I still have to select "do not recommend this channel" once a week for right wing slop. I just assume it's because of reaction content i watch here. Was once an angsty Christopher Hitchens watcher before finding Michael Brooks.

Love you guys but just FYI something weird was going on with ur audio in ur vids today…😣 At first I assumed it was just happening on my end but then I started hearing it in more of ur vids so I rewound to see whether the distortions would repeat & were actually part of the upload, and realized they are. Haven’t seen any other comments about it either so I just wanted to mention it in case you guys weren’t aware. Anyway, keep up the good work and doing what you do in providing us with sane commentary on our increasingly insane world 🥴🤘😝

I first came on KZfaq because I had some concerns about the religion I was raised in and I couldn’t let anyone in my real life know because they practice shunning. So I came with a fake name and found lots of former members who had gone through what I was going through. It gave me what I needed to make my own decisions, so I’m grateful for the platform. But it also led me down another path. I was still more comfortable with conservative stuff so I was drawn to Ben Shapiro type content which led me to more extreme views. Finally I just couldn’t stand the constant hate on women. It made me so depressed. Destiny was the first person I heard make good points against the conservatives, then Hasan and finally I’ve stated watching Sam. I feel a lot more sane and balanced now. So, thank you.

That has been my point during the entire Biden presidency. Hes not going far enough with his policies, but he's giving everyone a taste on what government can do for everyday Americans, and he's pushing the Overton window further left with demand side economic rhetoric.

Climate change absolutely affects geopolitics, thank you for bringing this up! The collapse of the bronze age (around 1150BCE) is an area of historical research gaining a lot more attention recently because the primary hypothesis posits that climate change in western Europe and the Mediterranean created a refugee crisis that resulted in conflicts so intense they ended civilizations. They call these refugees the "sea people" and many sources tend to categorize them as invading warlike people but odds are they were displaced bands and clans from the western Mediterranean who's sudden appearance in cities and empires disrupted social orders and eventually caused total collapse. It is possible that these people were organized and intent on takeover, but even with that idea in mind, it's still possible that scarcity of recourse and the loss of culturally significant land drive groups of people to extreme measures to ensure the survival of their clans and cultures. This is what history can teach us and how it can help us understand the world today and prepare for the future.
