I love how “I Vow to Thee, My Country” is incorporated into “Jupiter”!

I know the happy piece is always stereotypically the most liked... but I have to confess this is the best one at giving me chills. Not just "How cute" chills, but full-body, out of body experience, on some kind of drugs chills. The only other time I've experienced anything like this was during the final stretch of a race from the primal dopamine high you get from pushing your body at its absolute limit for so long.

The central chorale to the Jupiter movement has always been my favorite and I chose to arrange it for my French horn guild.

Holts taught music in Cardiff, Wales. Jupiter is his homage to the the Welsh choral tradition - from a nation holding music in the highest regard.

Holst bases most of the melodic material of "Jupiter" on the central chorale tune. For example, the three-note figure played by the strings at the beginning of the movement (0:30) is the same three notes/intervals that begin the big chorale theme (3:41).

Wonderful! We're so happy you like the video. We have an interactive DVD/BluRay of our installation, Universe of Sound, which is based on the Planets, if you want to delve deeper into the piece and what our players think while playing it: www.philharmonia.co.uk/shop/119/universe_of_sound_bluray The footage you watched here is from that installation.

When I first heard that one part in Jupiter, I cried because I remembered it was played at the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales. I could feel the pain her sons William and Harry felt as that was their mother they lost.

(I know I'm quite illiterate in the music world) I just found today about The Planets, but oh gosh I feel like I've listened to it my whole life. I believe after Beethoven these pieces might be the most sampled music in history. Am I the only one who "finds" The Legend of Zelda at 2:02? Edit: YES! It's very much similar to The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time: Lost Woods

I like rugby and I'm so clever that after watching this video I still don't know the name of this piece or who wrote it or the names of any of those weird ball-shaped objects that are in far out sky, hmm what do they call those..... Dunno and i'm also too stupid too look it up or even grasp the concept of looking anything up.

Nice, but this doesn't tell us what to listen for any more than just saying what happens, and it's incomplete, it doesn't talk about the ending parts after the opening and middle sections, the varied recapitulation of the opening melody and an end which is drawn out and ended with great punctuation.

Are Hu? The words you were looking for were Greco-Roman Mythology, not Astrology. Not the same. In any case, I believe Holtz brilliantly incorporated the duality of both the astrophysical qualities and mythological themes into each planet's namesake piece. This particular piece is an ode to the King of the Olympian Gods and the majestic giant protector of our Solar System that it was named after. The narrator does a decent job on the musical commentary, and I think you were incorrect (and more than a little rude and presumptuous) in claiming he didnt fully grasp the subject matter. As for myself, this entire series by Holtz has been a favorite of mine since I first heard it performed under the stars on a perfect clear night at Tanglewood, back c.1989ish. A magical night indeed. This series was a perfect choice for the soundtrack of the movie adaptation of "The Right Stuff".

Are Hu? The Planets were never intended to have any connection to the Roman Gods. I believe Holsts daughter said so. Each movements theme and title is based on how Holst defined the astrological characteristic of the planet and how it impacts our lives and psyche as humans. What they make us feel. The Roman Gods have nothing to do with it (except maybe Mercury, which could be coincidental)
