Interstellar - How Hans Zimmer Creates the Sound of Space

Hans Zimmer’s score for Interstellar dispensed of a lot of the musical language that had been so commonplace in his scores before this film. Driven by the desire to create a sound-world that he, and director Christopher Nolan, hadn't yet explored, Zimmer created music full of soft, introspective sounds: sustained organ melodies and chords, hushed orchestral textures and transparent, widely-spaced harmony. In this essay, I look at how this sound-world perfectly captures the isolation and loneliness of space, but I also consider, more significantly, how Hans Zimmer’s music realises the emotional message that is at the heart of the film.

6:20 This is why I want to experience this movie in imax again. That whole Cooper driving away and taking off with all the beautiful and extremely loud orchestra giving way to absolute silence was actually deafening in the theatre. It simultaneously made me immersed but also extremely aware that there suddenly was silence. Idk how to describe that experience, but I want to feel that again.

The scene where Cooper re-docks with the Endurance is one of my favorite film scenes of all time. The entire fate of humanity boiled down to the efforts of a single man, refusing to yield against impossible odds, motivated by his love for his family. That’s the stuff of myth right there, and the music tells the story just as much as what’s happening visually. Such a fantastic movie.

I learned enough through various band classes to basically understand most of the words. But I watch videos like this and realize how little I actually know. This score is balls to the wall amazing and I can feel and point to vague reasons why. But this dude breaks it down like a damn expert. When studios make big movies and don’t put the money into making the scores work this well, I don’t know why they bother. I don’t know if the masses don’t care or what. Marvel is really bad about this aside from Silvestri’s movies and Black Panther. The music isn’t bad, but so much is forgettable.

There are very few people that will understand the significance and the absolute brilliance of this sound track. This is the only sound track from start to finish that overwhelms me waves of chills and goosebumps. "No time for caution" on the docking scene has to be one of the most captivating and most emotional pieces of music that has ever been created. There is a moment in that piece that expresses an uncomprehending desperation for Cooper and Brand as well as humanity (at 2:35 of "No time for caution") itself. It brings tears to my eyes every time. Interstellar is one of my most favorite movies so far. This movie really makes me feel like there HAS to be something bigger than ourselves out there, somewhere, there JUST HAS TO BE. If ever there was a movie that creates hope for humanity on planet earth, then Interstellar is that movie.

This is an amazing analyzation! I am not crying, it's just dusty here. This is wonderful and really delves deep into the thought that great film composers put into their music. Not only does the film tell a story but so does the music and when they combine you create a masterpiece for the ears and eyes. Great job!
