“There’s a great degree of instability underneath him where people are jockeying for leadership.”
Putin is losing the support of the Russian people as it seems his country is becoming “a vassal state of China”,says former MI6 officer Christopher Steele.

Yes, Putin mk 1.0 version, had a lot of people fooled. Me, included I'm sorry to say. I wasn't alone. Putin is "modern, reformist, democratic, forward looking " etc etc etc etc. Well, we know now. The signs were there from the beginning. Their M.O. doesn't change. It never has, unfortunately. Litvinenko, the Chechen thing, Syria, Georgia, etc. Putin's ambitions were mapped out quite early on, but the power of self delusion is very strong. The thing is Russia and before Russia, Muscovy / Moskva has ALWAYS been that way. It certainly long predates the Bolsheviks in 1917. Read Joseph Conrad's "The Secret Agent" written at the end of the 19th century. Conrad was a Pole. He knew the Russian M.O. very well. His father Apolloniusz was sent to Siberia for his part in the 1863 uprising. With Russia history drearily repeats itself again and again and again. It's just the same old, same old, same old, over and over. How to stop it ?

At this point, all Western countries need to take an inventory of their Russian diplomats and lower-ranking staff. I think we can assume they're all spying, as that's sort of a traditional function of embassies and consulates.

A westernisation of Eastern Europe happened because russia lost their grip. That never meant that russia would change. Russia has never been a functioning democracy or a functioning state whereas most of eastern europe was similar to western europe before the formation of the Soviet Union. Hungary and Czechoslovakia tried to free themeselves but were brutally stopped by russia.

To the north, you'll see the Russian Far East, sparsely populated and rich in raw materials. Read some history. In two treaties in 1858 and 1860, a weak Chinese emperor was forced to sign over nearly one million square kilometres of territory to Russia, including access to the Sea of Japan. China wants that back. For Xi, Taiwan is an amuse-bouche. Russia's Far East is the main course.

There is no "bye bye". Whoever will be in charge, the huge land mass, a big chunk of the Earth's land surface area, is STILL going to be there. At present it's called the "Russian Federation." What should replace it ? That's the $ 64,000,000 question. I think it would be de-federalised. Break it up into smaller countries AFTER the removal of any residual nuclear warheads. The Russian (so called) Far East, including Manchuria is high on 🇨🇳 China's shopping list. The rest should be broken up into smaller nations, like the outer Soviet Republics that broke away in the 90s. Chechnya is definitely a thing, I suppose. A residual bit around Moscow would remain Russia or New Muscovy. Some kind of reformist democratic chap (pess) could be put in charge. If any are still left alive....?

I keep on hearing that Putin is too frightened to touch other people, that he's dying, that he is unpopular with his own people, and yet when I watched the May day parade in Moscow he looked in perfect health, walked to and from Kremlin, sat in there in quite a snow storm to watch the parade, he was greeting loads of veterans shaking their hands and kissing their cheeks. In addition to housing about one million Ukrainians, and the huge financial strain because they do not rely on russian gas and oil anymore. Maybe the rest of Europe, especially countries more to the West, should stop talking big and start supporting more. Germany spent more than France, Italy and Spain together. Even when looking at % of gdp germany spends more than the big european economies individually. That includes the UK. So maybe the others should stop talking and start acting more.

Christopher gave an open and frank opinion of the Russian foreign and domestic affairs which is great to hear and see as a layman. It does seem that the US & European nations will have to be able to create mechanism’s in an attempt to open dialogue with the post Putin regime. This in all likelihood that the Russian state as we know it may fracture into smaller nations some time in the not too distant future. The maintenance of nuclear power stations and weapons could then be an issue if not taken very seriously.
