Thank you for this. I am looking for as much info as possible. I am both immune-compromised and 'elderly' (76) with a severe case of Listeriosis. Of all the info I found on line, nobody said how extremely painful it is. I was camping & spent 2 nights of sheer hell. Now I'm recovering in a motel, treating myself, as I do not want to go to hospital or take anti-biotics. Ibuprofen for pain (miniscule amount, my system is super sensitive), lots of water, milk thistle tea for my poor liver trying to deal with all this, and tons and tons of sleep and rest. I take short walks in the beautiful northern California sun. My partner and friends are nearby. Keeping my spirits raised. Eating lightly as appetite returns. There are huge trees, nice people, and I love this motel enough to move in! The pain has lessened a great deal and now I do cool compresses on my hot hurting back - feels really good. There were balance issues but I have that anyway, so I move very slowly, carefully. My brain feels normal, with the usual sharpness and usual gaps, although I had excruciating headache the first night. Body pain was thorough - every cell, inside and out, was on fire for those two days and nights. I had no idea what I had till came to this motel and on line. Every muscle was on fire, and inner organs as well. I know what anyone, especially a professional will say - get self to a doctor! But I am not normal this way. I'm not out of the woods yet. A medical friend suggested drinking Gatorade for lost electrolytes, which also causes muscle pain. I will. She will also bring me some antibiotics in case things do not continue to improve. Please forgive me for using this forum to tell my story. I have looked all over the internet for personal experiences with Listeriosis, as there are always exceptions to rules. Ms Richards, your in-depth explanations here are so appreciated. They are also potentially very scary. I am overall healthy and have never taken medications other than a couple of bouts of antibiotics for tooth issues. A profound trust in my body's ability to heal accompanied by practical treatments is how I'm going at the moment. I will understand if this is not kept on your web site. Thank you again, please hold good thoughts for me and for all who suffer from this out-of-left-field situation.
