This week we're ranking the 8 studio albums of the unique, psychedelic/folk/jazz/r&b/blues/rock (that enough slashes for you?) band, Traffic.
****
Traffic were an English rock band, formed in Birmingham, in April 1967 by Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi, Chris Wood and Dave Mason. They began as a psychedelic rock group and diversified their sound through the use of instruments such as keyboards like the Mellotron and harpsichord, sitar, and various reed instruments, and by incorporating jazz and improvisational techniques in their music. Their first three singles were "Paper Sun", "Hole in My Shoe", and "Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush".
Traffic disbanded in 1969, during which time Winwood joined Blind Faith, then reunited in 1970 to release the critically acclaimed album John Barleycorn Must Die. The band's line-up varied from this point until they disbanded again in 1974. A partial reunion, with Winwood and Capaldi, took place in 1994.
Traffic were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.

Your lists are all good, and varied. It's good that you're all willing to dive deep into some of these older artists, and allow them to grow on you, just as you are when new music comes out. Low Spark and Barleycorn and Traffic are my favorites, but I grew up with them, unlike you guys. Good show

1. John Barleycorn Must Die 2. Mr. Fantasy (I like the goofy psychedelic tracks a lot!) 3. Traffic 4. The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys 5. When The Eagle Flies 6. Last Exit 7. Shoot Out At The Fantasy Factory 8. Far From Home When The Eagle Flies could possibly end up #4 for me whenever I relisten to it, not sure.

Traffic .....well let's see one release I've never really listened to is Where the eagle flies, but I'm sure it has it's redeeming musical moments. For albums prior to "Eagle" l would rate my favorites:#6/Shootout #5/ Last Exit #4/Mr. Fantasy #3/ Low Spark #2 John Barley. #1/ Traffic (2nd)...I feel that the US. edition of Mr. Fantasy is better choice than original Brit. cover. It does not include Hope l don't find...& Utterly Simple which l think are week tracks and at the time when it was released l bought US. copy. Traffic gets accolades for me as being a very together piece of music.... strong writing... sounds like they in the right groove. Not a throwaway track on it for me. I would agree w/ Kramer.

Nice list, Al. I’m a big fan of the first two albums on your list. About two years ago, I saw Steve Winwood in concert. Stellar. I am a huge Dave Mason fan. I’ve seen Mason in concert many times and even had an opportunity to chat with him. He is better than ever. He just released a newly recorded version of Alone Together. If you want a real treat, go to his KZfaq channel. There are some very recent interviews. Best wishes.

I've listened to Traffic every since I was a baby (or shortly thereafter) so I was very familiar with all these albums. I find it difficult to pick a favorite album, but I must say it would have been one of the three #1 picks made by the guys. If I held a gun to my head it would have to be "When the Eagle Flies". Nice to see how much Jason appreciates this album. Growing up at the time it was released I can honestly say I didn't know anyone else who like this album the way I did. Its also my go to album for Traffic to this day followed by "John Barleycorn", "2nd album" and "Low Sparks". I agree with the observations regarding "Last Exit". I've always ranked it low mostly because of side 2. But, the best songs on it were also on my "Best of Traffic" album which I purchased in the same year that "Last Exit" came out. So, I never bought "Last Exit" until much later on.

One of the rare cases where my favourite album of a band is a live one Traffic On the Road from the 1973 Tour and representing their peak period. I find the first albums interesting still but somehow they are children of the late 60s and a bit nostalgic. Their later albums however are timeless. I should not even mention Far From Home or Last Exit but will do for completeness. My number 1 + 2 are almost interchangeable. 1. Shoot Out at the Fantasy Factory 2. Low Spark of High Heeled Boys 3. When the Eagle Flies (This one almost sounds like Steely Dan, it grows with each listening) 4. Traffic 5. John Barleycorn Must Die 6. Mr Fantasy 7. Far From Home (a very unnecessary reunion) 8. Last Exit (only one studio side, the other side live from Fillmore West, studio side sounds like leftovers and the live is their worst live release, take On the Road or even Welcome to the Canteen) PS - I love this band since 50 years and regardless of how you rank them yourself, thank you for giving the band a video...Yes, When the Eagle Flies is a hidden gem, it takes more time than the others but it is worth giving it more than one try.

I just caught up with this. I was 13 in 1971 and loved Low Spark all the older kids had it was considered hip cool. Shootout was not just passable think Traffic’s time was starting to pass remember thought it was just ok. I’m 65 now just was relaxing in my lanai last night put on Shootout and loved it. Then listened to When the Eagle Flies same deal so great to discover thanks

Another enjoyable survey of a seminal (but sometimes overlooked) band. Their influence, especially on late '60s-early-'70s British rock was huge. In that way, they remind me of The Band; lots of space in the music. Traffic helped develop a musical approach transitioning from ornate psychedelia to a more stripped-down, eclectic approach that many other bands also explored (P.Floyd, Procol Harem, Donovan, F.Mac, The Family, etc.). Because their discography was fairly consistent, any ranking could work and all three of you did a convincing job with your choices. I remember hearing "Dear Mr Fantasy" played in a cheesy anti-drug movie (GO ASK ALICE) and my jaw dropped. The American version of the debut was a revelation and I followed the band through their classic period. My sentimental favourite is still ...BARLEYCORN... but all the albums are worthy of attention. I'd also recommend the two-disk SMILING PHASES on Island Records. This compilation includes a lot of the strong, stand-alone singles. (The band could use a decent box set, if those things are still a thing.) As with a few of the other comments below, Traffic live is worth further exploration. WELCOME TO THE CANTEEN (a Traffic album in all but name) is an early lo-fi gem and TRAFFIC ON THE ROAD is a more complete picture of the expanded band. What it lacks in passion is made up in musicianship & groove. Great job, guys!
@DeanJonasson
@DeanJonasson 6 ай бұрын
"Barleycorn" is genius and even gets included in collections of British folk-rock (e.g. THE ELECTRIC MUSE box). Traffic can be divisive, there's no doubt. The people who don't 'get them' describe Traffic as wankers, noodlers, or utterly pretentious. Their loss, of course, but remember that music is quite subjective. Check out the questionable nominees for the 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. At least Traffic got in (though not until 2004)! @@flynnlizzy5469

I have to agree with Jason that "When The Eagle Flies" is highly underrated. I'm not a big fan of "Dream Gerrard" - that reoccurring motif or hook or whatever you call it that's played thru the first 5:38 of the song is more annoying than anything at the moment. But the rest of the album is very strong. The correct answer for #1, though, has to be The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys. The "rockers" - "Rock And Roll Stew" and "Light Up Or Leave Me Alone" - drop the album down a smidge, but the rest of the album is immaculate to my ears. With various bands, I agree with each of you at different times. It's interesting to see how each video plays out. You guys have a fine channel going here, and it should be more well known. (I'm still working on the albums I've not heard in Neil Young's discography - I don't know how you guys did it in such a short period of time. I'm currently up to Hitchhiker. Neil Young is beating me. But at the very least, I've got about 100 new songs of Neil's that I enjoy.)

Jason, The Eagle is the end of Traffic. Good for you to get the point of Dream Gerrard. But, being from that period of time I consider Traffic and Steve Winwood the real double secret perfection of the Sixties. Just listen to Steve singing Georgia on my Mind and then playing jazz on Waltz For Lumumba..That woke me up a lot. Ja!

I tried Traffic in my teens and didn't like them tried again in my thirties and still wasn't keen. It was only when I'd passed 50 and gained more of an appreciation for jazz, that I came to enjoy listening to the band. I have two routes into them when I'm in the mood. One starts with John Barleycorn and usually moves onto Low Spark. Both are 9/10 albums for me. The other is to listen to their live album from their reunion tour in the mid 90s called The Last Great Traffic Jam (10/10). This is Winwood and Capaldi supported by others but it has a great set list and the performances are excellent. Much better than their other two live albums. Very rarely do I venture into the other albums I have although I played the self titled album this morning and When The Eagle Flies yesterday. I'm looking forward to the Colosseum video. They are a band I always pair with Traffic for their jazz/blues influences.

Mr Fantasy is a top notch psychedelic album, one of the best ever...in my top 40 albums. BUT the 1968 album second album is a stone cold classic that is an album that puts them over the top with the best ever...and it’s in my top 15 albums of all time for me. Flawless, perfect acoustic hippie masterpiece alongside albums like Moondance. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. Barleycorn is third fav for me. It took me a few listens for the first two records but they grow enormously over time, I recommend a few more listens and you’ll appreciate them much more. Good on you Kramzer and Joe for self titled lp

Jim Gordon on Welcome To The Canteen, and Low Spark. Greatest drummer for me. All their albums have great songs, but lots are weird too. Dear Mr. Fantasy song is probably their biggest classic song, but most would say Feelin’ Alright. Check out Medicated Goo track by PP Arnold. I can’t remember if Clapton and Delaney and Bonnie and Friends play on that track, but they play on other tracks on this unreleased album. Then obviously Mike Bloomfield playing Dear Mr. Fantasy live.
