After a recent purchase on eBay that turned out to be counterfeit, I thought I would discuss ways to help identify and avoid counterfeit laptop batteries.

Many thanks for this video. There are a ton of sellers on Ebay obviously selling counterfeit batteries while claiming they are Genuine OEM Dell batteries. They all have the same obvious flaw. The serial number QR code is missing, and the lettering next to the Dell Logo is Blue on the counterfeit batteries, while it is Grey on the Genuine OEM batteries, just like your video shows. In fact, the counterfeits all get this detail wrong, so Blue Text next to the Dell logo is literally a giant sign saying I AM FAKE...

these batteries fail cus they don't have cell balancing , it just monitors each series and then cut off when one of them goes 4.2v or 2.7v , the cells in them are typically good enough for an old laptop , most of them do perform to their rated capacity but the bms board lacks cell balancing and cus these cells are cheaper and may not have equal internal resistance they go out of balance soon. like in 200 to 300 cycles the pack would become unusable.

It is a pity there isn't a reputable battery maker that does aftermarket batteries, but with the highest capacity cells available at the time. The manufacturer will never update the cell capacities even if they keep making new batteries more than a decade after the computer model was released. (looking at you Lenovo).. Only thing left is to find a reputable receller, and even that can be difficult with the newest anti-counterfeit chips in the batteries.

You should further open each battery, reason being you'd be surprised as to how many will contain sand. I purchased some Battery Banks that contained several cells only 1 cell actually worked and the others were dark blue cover, like yours, and contained sand. If nothing else it might make a good follow up video... Cheers...
@korishan

Interesting, that would go along with the 1hr run time. Altho, this would mean 3 cells are good (2000mAh) and the other 6 are sand barrels.

I have traced the discharge profile of what was supposed to be a 'new' 'original DELL' 97 Wh battery (where the 'new' was later clarified to mean 'original used but still in good health' 😮). I found a duration of about 1hour - 1 1/2 hours with a sharp transition at the end of said duration (irregardless of battery capacity - in one case the transition was at 62%, in another it was at 44%). The profile is in a video of my chan that i will link below (because yt will probably delete the entire comment).

I got a ton of those battery packs that are genuine. I took apart a few but they all have LG or Samsung HV cells. Not very useful for me and shouldn't be mixed with 4.2v cells as the discharge curve and nominal voltages are slightly different.

@LithiumSolar 4 жыл бұрын
I have a HUGE box of those green LG HV cells. I'm not sure what to do with them lol. They don't seem to test well even if I test with 4.35V.

@@LithiumSolar I had a lot of those hvoltage cells. I charged them to 4.20v and did a cap check on them, and that number was what I wrote on the side before I stuck them in my diy power wall.
@LithiumSolar
@LithiumSolar 4 жыл бұрын
I did test them at 4.20V but I get bad numbers like 1600mAh on a cell that's supposed to be 2600mAh. Are you getting large discrepancies like that too? Most Samsungs or Sanyos that are rated for 2600mAh from packs in the same lot test easily 2400-2700mAh, so the only thing left to assume is that the LGs deteriorate faster for some reason.
@DavidSmith-dm8ew
@DavidSmith-dm8ew 4 жыл бұрын
@@LithiumSolar It depends on how old and how used up the hv cells are. And how much more cap can a cell hold going from 4.20v to 4.3v, 100-300mah? I never kept any tested cells under 1900mah
@lnxpro
@lnxpro 4 жыл бұрын
@@LithiumSolar Almost same results. got a ton of pink LG HV cells that give me 1800 to 2100 mAh when testing from 4.2v down to 2.8v. I don't think i'll be using any of those. Either way i moved over to leaf cells for the time being due to ease of assembly. When I get more time i'll get back into 18650's to augment my leaf powerwall. lol

Hmmm. The 2nd battery you bought on Ebay could just be a much better quality counterfeit. You didn't mention how much you paid for it (first clue) or open it to see what type of cells were inside, like you did the 1st one you bought. Seems like an unfair comparison. As a buyer for a computer business, I've run into my share of counterfeit batteries and ac adapters. Some you can obviously tell from the outside, but some that you might think are totally original will surprise you when you pop them open. I've cut into several seriously good counterfeit adapters only to find the tiny wire gauge and lack of coaxial shielding a dead giveaway. Good job on the video - the weight thing is definitely a factor - especially in AC Adapters - but another very big clue you left out is the FIT and color/texture. Counterfeits will often fit poorly (or not at all) and have an off shade of color that you would never see in an original.
@redbaron6805
@redbaron6805 2 ай бұрын
Except, counterfeits don't have the serial number on it nor the lot number sticker. Also, both of the Genuine batteries had Grey lettering next to the Blue Box with the Dell logo. The counterfeit has Blue lettering, which appears to be counterfeit indication still seen today.

I thought about doing that but don't know that I could open it in a way that would go back together in a way that fit in the laptop and was safe to use.
@korishan
@korishan 4 жыл бұрын
It would be very hard to do cleanly. The shell is sonic welded together, basically the halves are fused together. The only way to do it cleaning would be a dremel and cutoff wheel. But that would take a lot of time, patience, and extreme care to not go too deep. And then, even if that was successful, then comes the putting it back together again. I suppose you could use super glue, but it wouldn't be as strong as it was before. On top of that, it might be possible that once the bms looses battery power, it completely shuts down. Without knowing which pins to short, or to activate externally, the battery would be a paperweight.
