Lithuania's Happy Paganism 🇱🇹

Survive the Jive

Lithuania survived communism and preserved its Catholic identity. But Lithuania's enduring pagan past has survived both communism and Catholicism. Baltic paganism is very close to the ancient Indo-European paganism and much of it survives in the folk customs of the Lithuanian people. This film looks at the glorious nature of the ex-Soviet state and examines some of the spiritual customs that have been preserved in this, the last country in Europe to convert to Christianity.

@Vasian Vasianich - Gee, I don't know... The pope owning brothels, the pope being a mafia don, worshiping of saints (which is only a Catholic thing and directly contradicts the bible), Catholics selling seats in heaven, etc. What he meant is according to the true spirit of Christianity. Catholicism is mainly Roman paganism with Jesus replacing Jupiter. In fact, there are prayers in Latin where God is called "Deus Patr" which was literally Zeus/Jupiter's actual title. Protestantism tried to get back to basics - to shed the gold and drop the "man made" stuff. The problem is it still had a lot of Catholic influence like Sunday worship, the trinity, etc. that are incompatible with the Judaic roots. So basically Protestants took a lie, tried to make it a truth and totally missed the mark. But what does it matter? All Abrahamic religions are poison.

Pretty cool. I am not anti-Christian or something...but I do somehow feel this pretty strong attraction to Pagan believes and I am really proud that Lithuania preserved our Pagan culture so that even today we have active Pagan community. Even our Christianity is very much intertwined with Pagan culture. But exactly the Pagan culture, music, and mythology, ornaments, is something I feel somehow very close to...and something that is really ours and it never was forgotten. We never had our own country trying to destroy Pagan culture or enforce Christianity.

This is my exact situation, my great grandfather came immigrated from Lithuania and the other side of my family is a total mix of Germanic and Baltic countries, and amercian culture and its Christianity is one of the last things I'd want to spiritually connect myself too and follow. I've always just stuck to the belief that nature is so much more than it seems and if there are any gods they will all be found within the nature we live in. Finally finding something that I can connect with that's actually apart of my blood and family history is relieving in a way

This is so different to what you see in the UK where Paganism has been pushed out to the fringes to be mainly practised by people from the counter culture, which is great but brings with it, it's own problems, mainly counter culture ideas and attitudes that have nothing to do with Paganism. Great to see s true community following the old ways, looks very authentic....

Ans: Nature is a sacred book for all pagan culture. yes you can learn it, you can learn monogamy from Swans, Bald eagles, owls and cranes, You can learn selfless service from flowing rivers, from shade and fruit of a tree. Butterflies and bumblebees teach us to take as much as we need from nature. May God Agni (fire God) guide you. May God Surya (sun God) give you hope. 🙏🙏🙏❤️ From India🇮🇳

@@faithcross8109 What makes you think Lithuanian religion has few gods? Lack of historical records? The Hellenic people, who descended from the same Proto-Indo-European people as the Baltics, had many gods and we know of them almost exclusively from ancient records. Since Baltic records are so rare how do you know that they are exhaustive? Granted, Hinduism IS very different, but for different reasons. And it inherited many things from its Proto-Indo-European ancestor which is where their similarities come from.

tubifexgod - paganism is alive and well in Lithuania - an unbroken link to our ancestors. It was common to find observers of the old ways in the countryside well into the 20th century. Romuva (what Lithuanian paganism is now called) is experiencing a resurgence in Lithuania and the diaspora.

Recently I saw an interview of Lithuanian diplomat in India where he told how Hindi and Lithuanian language both originated from Sanskrit and have many similar words. Devas (L) - Dev/devta (H) from Dev (Sanskrit); meaning- diety/God Ugnes (L) - Agni (H) from Agney (S); meaning- Fire Shakha same in all three, meaning- branch I am glad to see their rituals, so much similar to Hinduism(sanatana dharma). It is rare for us to see similar culture outside India. Happy to know about Lithunian culture.

Poland villages have pretty much the same thing - people still may consider themselves catholic, but it's basically full blown pagan traditions and customs, covered in judeo-christian mythology blanket. For example we still drown effigy of Marzanna in a river, so the spring may come. Church tried to ban this tradition for millenia, but looks like church is almost dead in poland - and the tradition is still here. Also all the sacred groves ale still considered important by local communities, we have certain customs when it comes to collecting or cutting certain trees, like bowing and asking the tree when collecting black lilac... When I think about it now, there's ridiculously huge amount of pagan traditions present.

I am radically sympathetic with Paganism. It is part of who I am. But I know that reality-rejecting fantasy does not help anything. The history of European Paganism is overflowing with violence. Christianity did not bring violence to Europe as a new thing. The problem of violence and conflict is found in all human cultures and societies. I stand in defense of Paganism because of its real virtues that need to be preserved. But let's not pretend that anything is something that it isn't. Whatever path we choose to follow, we must make Reality our best friend.

We're not vexed. Because Europeans continued to kill each other AFTER Christ was born. And it wasn't because of Christianity that Europeans (2,000 years LATER) are not killing each other in great numbers anymore. It's called evolution. The most evolved people of northern European descent are actually SECULAR. But what's the most uneducated and violent Western civilization ? America; which is also the most religious and Christian. Oh, ANOTHER school shooting ? Let's pray about it, lol.
