I am thrilled to hear how much you are enjoying our trail. I watch AT videos and live vicariously through all of the hikers. Due to health reasons, I will never be able to hike a long trail however I got so excited thinking my husband and I might be able to do some trail magic! I was thinking maybe in Georgia sometime when we are on vacation but now that we have a trail which I had never heard of I am thinking here! Woot! Woot! God Bless!

The basic concept of using a liner sock that you covered in some detail includes the idea that it hugs your foot closely such that foot movement and any friction created takes place between the two sock layers and not between the skin of your foot and the one sock layer. Some sock designs attempt to compensate by having a loop pile inner surface but my experience is that design doesn’t work as well as a liner sock at preventing blisters. The Injinji brand has its advantage for those who tend to get blisters between their toes but that has never been me so I don’t use them. You made a good point about the liner sock not retaining sand and drying quickly. I often hike with two pairs of liners that I interchange throughout the day. Wear one while one is drying out on your pack as you hike. Sometimes the most porous and breathable shoe works against you in very sandy conditions as the uppers, while they breath well, also let a lot of sand sift into your shoe even when you’re wearing gaiters. Something to think about when choosing a shoe. Nice job with the Q&A.

I live in Oviedo. You passed by here at least several days ago. There’s a section of the trail I walk to from here, which I am on sometimes multiple times a week. Out there recently, I thought, wouldn’t it be amazing if I saw those guys! Anyway, if you like the umbrella that you’re hiking with, could you put a link on here for it? I’d like to look at getting one, if you recommend. I’ve never had one before, but sun is an issue for me.

Kelly, I enjoy your videos so much! You are a serious optimist which I am also. It's nice to see you on these trips and always smiling. I am envious of your hikes. The Florida Trail is something that I always wanted to do but never took the time to do it and now I can no longer hike due to the Lyme Disease. I'm wishing you a great day today on the trail and always have fun. Today is my 70th birthday and although my knees aren't cooperating due to the Lyme, I feel like I'm a teenager and have lived my life, an extremely good life, with two sayings that I have had since my outdoor adventures started. 1.If it ain't fun, why do it? and 2. Never put off things that you really want to do. Everybody that died this morning had plans for this afternoon! So, I'm excited every time you post a video, It lets me live vicariously through your trips. Thank you, good luck and get James down there for the Panhandle. You absolutely are beaming when you two are together. Your love for him is evident. geek AT '90 & '02, PCT '08

Marjory Stoneman Douglas published a very successful book: "The Everglades: River of Grass". That book was one of the main reasons they made the Everglades a national park, otherwise it would have been paved over coast to coast by now and Florida would be as dry as Arizona as a result.

Flat Walking hurts more because you are hitting the same sports on the feet constantly with no change, also you walk faster on the flats which means more impact. When climbing, walking over stones or roots you hit different spots, you walk slower and also you activate more muscles of the quads and glutes. Also when i first tried out Barefoot shoes i realized that tarmac is actually harder than gravel with stones. Really no idea why people run on tarmac even with maximum cushion shoes.

I agree with you on preserving wild lands. I’ve been disgusted with urban sprawl for many decades. If we could somehow at least slow it, that would diminish and even alleviate many of the environmental issues of todays world. When we remove flora and replace it with concrete and asphalt, an electric car isn’t gonna help. Sorry about the rant. 😉

Hang in there...the North Florida swamps are worse...getting around Big Bend and Apalachicola will seriously test your tolerance for types of swamps. Bradwell Bay is the worst, be careful when you get there as it looks like it's only 6 miles through the swamp, but if the water table is high it will be more than an hour per mile...don't start into it if it's already after noon...you do not want to night hike in those swamps. Oh, and avoid the "resident campers" in the Osceola Forest...they may be nice to you, but they are hard to trust...they're surviving on the edge out there. Oh, and if you're using the app formerly known as Guthook...Far Out...pay attention to places where it says something like "Enter swamp here and rejoin forest service road .4 miles north" cause after a few of those the realization that you can just stay on the forest service road can make you feel like an idiot for going through some of the manmade tree farm swamps.

Exciting!!!!! You're getting to the part of the state where there are LOTS of springs! Ocala NF is very pretty. I live near Blue Spring Volusia County and we get many visits from black bears. For the most part they leave you alone but there have been reports on the news from time to time of an attack. Both of my daughter's schools go on lockdown occasionally because of a bear on campus. So just be aware. With that said, we run across them more in populated areas than we ever have while camping or exploring in the woods. Having fun watching your hike! 💗 Thanks for sharing!!!!!

Glad you mentioned preserving our green spaces....seems our government has no intention of limiting the growth and development that Florida is experiencing...over 1000 people A DAY are moving here and there seems to be no regulation. It's very disheartening b/c if something isn't done to protect Florida, the beauty that everyone is moving here for will be gone....

We are definitely not preserving our green spaces here. Check out all the new development here on the Treasure coast. Even though Kelly is seeing quite a bit of wildlife, so much is disappearing so fast. County commissioners are giving out zoning variances here like party favors. Please be careful Kelly around the alligators, I totally agree with you most are so afraid of us, but rarely they do attack. Yesterday an 85 year old woman was killed right here in Port St. Lucie walking her dog in a pretty developed area. Always use caution around waterways. Thanks Kelly for taking us along!

It was so much prettier when I was growing up as a kid. Woods and fields that went on forever. I remember the beautiful Orange Groves for 1,000s and 1,000s of acres that smelled so good when they blossomed. Now Florida has been over run by people moving here and destroying all the nature with their cookie cutter homes and golf courses. Yes, Florida has gators and crocs. Gators are freshwater throughout the state and our crocs are saltwater at the southern end of Florida (Miami to Naples area in general). I do recommend looking up proper pronunciations of our city's names. I think if I did the trail today, it would take me a year to walk it all. Not because I'm older, but because I would not want to rush through it just to say I did it. I would want to take it in slow and enjoy every area. I do understand you're on a time limit, but with 2,000+ people moving to Fla daily, our beautiful nature and wildlife are disappearing at a high rate of speed. I also would have taken the west trail in central Fla to see more nature. Kelly, I have been enjoying your hike through my home state and just wish you could have seen how much prettier it was 30 years ago. Sending prayers for a safe and enjoyable travels.

Where are all the supernumerous humanity coming from?? We aren't that great that we need more of us. We are just a freak of nature and the ultimate invasive species. We are killing the natural world. Something that can never be restored or remade. It took 14 billion years the first time. My heart sank reading this comment by a Florida native who was there thirty years ago. Imagine what it was three hundred years past. Another world.

@@johndonahue4777 I've been around more than 30 years. It was reference to Kelly's age. My point was the difference in just that amount of time. A 100 years would even a more major difference. Hey guys I just found out yesterday that you need a permit now to film in national parks and preserves! I hope you guys got one for big cypress because if they find out that you are making money 💰 from your videos with no permits you will be fined up to 10,000$!!!! And get this the permit costs 280$!!! Isn't that something!? You guys might want to look into it before they find out! PS. This includes all of the Appalachian trail too!
@rumblechick73

Can you film youtube videos in national parks? Basically, if one were to read between the lines, the park service is saying that it's technically illegal for low-impact KZfaqrs and Tiktokers to film in national parks without a permit, but they'll just look the other way, unless those filmmakers use substantial equipment, such as sets and lighting. Nov 18, 2022 Also, Big Cypress is a national preserve, not a national park. The AT is also not a national park.
@centaursailing
@centaursailing Жыл бұрын
I've watched so many KZfaqrs discussing this issue and many have quoted park service employees who said they wouldn't be chasing down low impact filming. How could they possibly track down and fine everyone, there are hundreds if not thousands of videos of fishing channels alone in Everglades National Park and Biscayne National Park. Then there are quite a few At hiker's already setting out this season vlogging. This law needs to be overturned immediately.
@phishermonjon
@phishermonjon Жыл бұрын
@centaursailing it's pretty easy you just type in each individual park name and the KZfaq search shows every video in that park and if the views are high enough guess who gets a 10,000$ fine. I just don't understand people on vacation that take a crazy animal video that goes viral, do they get fined too!?
