After 20 years of research and visiting the Little Bighorn Battlefield in Montana over a dozen times, I was given a rare opportunity for a tour of portions of the battlefield not accessible by tourists. A large portion of the battlefield, including the area where Major Reno made his advance across the Little Bighorn river to attack Sitting Bull's encampment, is privately owned on the Crow Reservation. I was able to take my wife and daughter with me as our land owner/guide took us through areas very few people have had access to for over 100 years. It was an experience that has led me to re-think a lot about what I thought I knew about the battle that took place there in 1876.

Really great video. I have to do that myself. You can see how it looked back in 1876, almost exactly the same. Looks like you all were riding nice, cooperative horses too!

Daniel Shoden a brilliant series. Actually if he did it on horseback it would have been even better.

Ditto Ron and Jonathan. I'd love to do this ride. I first visited the battlefield back in '73 with my Dad. Back then, it was a pretty desolate place with not too many tourists. You were pretty much free to wander wherever you liked. I've been wanting to go back ever since. I have family up in Casper and now that my wife and I have just relocated to Houston, I guess I'll have to point the nose of the Mustang north sometime this summer and check it out again.

I believe its about 100 bucks but I was told recently they don't do it anymore because of Insurance of something? I know there was another ride for about 500 bucks a person which is unbelievable seeing as 5 people would mean 2500 dollars for a few hours ride. Good job if you could get it huh.

Any one who watches this must realize that Custer his scouts and all others along the ridge including Boston Custer, Knipe, and Martin, had a full clear view of Reno and the attack on him, his withdrawal and rout, the sheer strength of numbers the Indians were attacking him with. None told Benteen when they met him in fact Martin said the Indians were running and Custer was in a hot fight when in fact Martin left Custer at the head of the Coulee and didn't even see the village. The last he saw of Custer was him riding of down the Coulee with no Indians in sight. Custer had every chance and opportunity to ride to Reno's aid. He didn't. All this theory of crossing Ford B to attack the village blah blah, ignores the fact Custer ignored Reno's plight and was willing to sacrifice him and his men to stall for time and keep the Indians occupied while he did whatever to obtain glory. If he had of survived he would have been court martialled without doubt. Custer at no time instructed any support for Reno and as far as he knew Reno was wiped out. When calling for packs on 2 occasions, Sgt Knipe and Martin, to Benteen and McDougal, he did not instruct them to assist Reno, did not even mention Reno and simply asked them to enter the field and come to him. He knew Benteen was minutes away from Reno and didn't even tell him he had sent Reno over the river. Further, when Custer sent the messages back he was at the head of the Coulee and had not even attacked the village and was under no threat whatsoever with the Indians attacking Reno. People think Custer sent the messages to Benteen because he was under fire and heavy attack when in fact he hadn't even approached the river or village and had over 200 troops totally intact with no threat to him at that time. It was only after he approached the river later that the Indians turned from Reno and attacked Custer. The irony is , is that the Indians were able to attack Custer en mass because they had defeated Reno driven him to Reno hill and he was no longer a threat. This absolute rubbish that Reno let Custer down is exactly that. From that clip you can see that the full battle of Reno was fully visible from the bluffs and that he had no chance against the Indian numbers. Everyone criticises Benteen saying he must have heard the gunfire 4 miles away yet Custer was just over a mile from the Reno battle and would have heard the gunfire distinctly and being a veteran of many battles in the civil war would have realized the gunfire was on the move and erratic then less distinct and moving as Reno retreated then was on the run. But Custer ignored it, never once sent scouts to go to the bluffs to see what the situation was, when he could have returned to Reno in less that 8 minutes and consolidated with Reno and benteen and the pack train on Reno hill and would have then had a full force with only 30 dead approx. from the Reno battle. He could have then made a full scale assault or consolidated his position . The Indians would most certainly withdrawn and fought a rear guard while the village packed and ran. that was what Custer didn't want, so stupid Custer divided his forces, 1st the pack train, then Benteen sent of, then Reno sent of then Yates sent of then Keogh and Calhoun. He would have been court martialled in disgrace if he survived .

I'm very interested in your comments. I've just started studying this battle and this clip was very helpful as it enabled me to study the terrain etc (I live in the UK). I've wondered why Custer did not go to Reno's aid, especially as I understand he (Custer) promised him that he would have the backing of the full cavalry. Thanks again for your comments

Your very welcome. Im Australian and visited the site 9 years ago with friends in the USA and only knew about it from movies. I was surprised when i got the the site at how large the area was and the distances so started reading up and was stunned at what actually happened. And yes Custer did tell Reno to attack the village and he would support him with the full outfit. He rode of. Custer was told by the scouts that Reno had been routed and was fleeing across the river being slaughtered. He did nothing. He was fully aware of it and did not ride 1 1/2 miles back to Reno. He did not tell Benteen and Benteen in fact was directed to Reno by scouts as Benteen came to a divide in the trail and had no idea which way Custer had gone. The scouts pointed upwards and Benteen discovered Reno on the hill. Reno was second in command under Custer and Benteen under him. He handed Reno the instructions he had received from Custer and Reno countermanded the order telling Bentten to stay with him. I can recommend 2 books . Son Of The morning Star. You can buy it second hand on Amazon cheap, and another great read is A Terrible Glory. Fascinating books about it all and facts. Glad to see you have an open mind bout it. Benteen was the hero of it all. Theres also a video on here KZfaq, movie Son of the Morning Star which is based on teh book. Good watch . I suggest you watch the video series by CusterAppollo. It is an amazing 30 part video series that will answer all these questions. It is the best review and analysis of the battle that I have seen. Very objective, very accurate (in my opinion).

WRONG!!! Reno ( who should have not been in command as he had zero experience fighting indians) He was totally incompetent to lead this charge. First instead of charging into the village, he set up a scrimmage line instead. This led to a 25% loss of firepower as one private held the rains of the other 3 members firing toward the village. Then, he moved into the wooded area, leaving a much smaller number to scrimmage the indians. He moved there after reports that indians were moving into the wooded area where the horses were kept. Other units moved into that wooded area leaving the less to stop the indian advance. Eventually, ( God, I am sooo sorry to write this long but this guy who posted this is a complete idiot ABMW20) After eventually everyone move back into the wooded area with out orders as Reno had already left and put someone in charge that should have not. been in charge. ( Please see CusterApollo part 18 the valley fight on youtube) This guy is the definitive historian on this battle. While he was in the wooded area the indians had no real offensive threat to get the troops out of the woods. They tried setting the grass and woods on fire, but it was sill so green it only provided smoke to obscure the troops. Then Reno (who really lost the fight for the little Bighorn) was speaking to Custer's favorite scout Bloody Knife as to what they should do next, when a bullet hit Bloody Knife in the head and splattered blood and brains on Reno. This caused Reno to panic and to give multiple orderes to mount up or not. Reno caused the deaths of 33 troopers on his crazy dash to the ridge leaving many to die in the wooded area and on the the complete his dash to escape. ( NO reserve guard, etc.) Please I cannot keep writing regarding this Imbeciles remarkes, and he truly is) Please follow this ApolloCusters muliti video of the battle to really understand what happened and not some Reno relative or just nut to truly understand the pinnings of the battle. I am not a master of this battle but I can tell you with full honesty that this posting by AMBWM2 is from someone who has not a full understanding of the battle and should not be remotely taken as any fact what so ever...

Daniel Shoden I disagree. Custer lost the fight when he divided his forces without knowing the number of enemies he would be fighting. It's one of the basic tenants of warfare that you do not divide your forces without knowing your enemies strength or disposition, which Custer did not. If Reno had continued his charge, it would have just added his entire command to the list of the dead. His troops were armed with single shot carbines that were better as clubs on horseback, single action revolvers that could not be reloaded easily while in a fight (each spent case had to be punched out manually, and each round loaded individually through a loading gate), and nothing else. They had no sabers since they had been left behind. Had he continued his charge, his entire command would have been surrounded inside the village, almost 1/2 mile further away from the river than they were when they formed a skirmish line, on horses that were already tired from days of hard marching, without the cover of the trees they eventually fell back to, and even further away from any means of retreat. They may have killed a few more Indians, but its doubtful ANY of them were have made it out alive. The Indian warriors weren't going to scatter because of his charge. They were defending their women and children, there was no way they were going to run. Additionally Custer knew that this had happened. His scouts told him that Reno's charge had failed and that he was skirmishing with them, and he well may have been able to see it for himself from the bluffs. But he continued forward. If at that point he had turned around and joined Reno, waited for Benteen and the pack train, he would have likely survived and still had a chance to chase down at least some of the Indians. A village that size doesn't move very fast, an additional few hours or even day to reorganize would not have been a bad thing. Plus, Terry was on his way down from the north and arrived about a day or so later.
