Lol choice? A man forces himself to your bedroom in a time where even calling for help in the situation ruins a woman's reputation and as they said it "purity". She had no choice. She rang for help she's ruined. If she did go with it there might be a chance that he keeps his mouth shut. Pamuk deserved it. I hope the same thing doesn't happen to your mother, sister or niece.

There's always one person who will highlight the rich peoples situation because deep down they are jealous or really wish it for themselves no matter how much they deny it. Why aren't you glad Mary did have help instead of being sarcastic about it? Yet another woman wasn't fed to the intolerable and excruciatingly high ideals that were pushed onto women of those days. Pfff. The reality is that women were used and abused back in those days on every level and had NO choices about anything, the men owned women back then and women could not refuse their husbands in anything. That includes the Rich Women, having the pretty dresses and houses just made it fractionally more tolerable yet worse at the same time as they were much more isolated than the average woman who went out to do the food shop etc, they had people to chat too.

@@weltschmertzz But did she so much as raise her voice in opposition to Mr. Pamuk's advances in her bedroom? Nope. She made absolutely no effort to oppose his wishes (which, rightly or wrongly, he took as consent). She made a choice, and she had to live with it.

We were made to like Mary in spite of how she was, most of the time. I hated Mary, to be honest. But she had a human side and when we could see it with no doubt at all, it wasn’t possible not to sympathize with her. But overall, she just wasn’t my favorite character. I could be made to feel for her and like her immensely but I could never quite love her. When she was good, she was very good, but when she was bad, she was awful.

@patricia • Mary had a one night stand with a single man who forced himself into her room. Edith had an ongoing sexual relationship with a married man that resulted in pregnancy. Edith would not give up the child and, after having generational tenants adopt the child, Edith took the child back, which forced those loyal tenants to leave. That doesn't include Edith's attempted seduction of the farmer she was driving for. And the reason Mary's options were limited was because Edith spread the gossip about Pamuk. Since Edith ended marrying up, she is the one person who was never held accountable for her poor choices and the hurt she left behind her. Just ask the Drews.

The thing is there was truth in her statement. Yes, she did have to pay for her consequences with Pamuk. What do you call living with the guilt of a man you shagged dying in your bed? The shame of that moment, and almost being blackmailed. Also, letting Rosalind put doubts in her head, and Matthew almost marrying Lavinia. She had to suffer consequences several times. Mary has got a nerve judging Ethel for sleeping with a man without marriage. If she had gotten pregnant by Pamuk I'd like to see how she would take to being stuck with her choice. Of course she was careful when she went off with Tony Gillingham. Unfortunately Ethel didn't have that much sense. Mary is hateful. In this particular case she just wants to get Matthew back and can't bear to get married to Richard while Lavinia marries Matthew. The problem is she was never made to pay for her mistakes. She should have never gotten Matthew back and then she'd learn a thing or two about choices.

Ugh Mary really is one of my least favourite characters in Downton Abbey, she’s a selfish, stuck up, manipulative snob! They only times I found her bearable was her friendship with Anna. I always thought it was unfair that Mary was Lord Grantham’s AND Carson’s favourite while Sybil was Cora’s. Poor Edith was always forgotten, so glad she got the last laugh and married Bertie and became a Marchioness in the end! Despite Mary cruelly trying to sabotage the wedding.

Mary was frequently mean to other people when she herself was unhappy. When Bertie was courting Edith, Mary threw her sister under the bus because she herself was lovesick. And in this scene, she was stuck in an engagement with the controlling Richard Carlisle while Matthew was going to marry Livinia -- so, again, somebody else has to pay for her unhappiness. Her downstairs counterpart would be Thomas.

Poor Edith! Actually she was a stinker. She actually betrayed Mary and risked causing social oblivion upon all the Crawleys including herself. Mary may have been flirtatious, but she did not invite Pamuk into her bedroom. There he was and what was she supposed to do? Reminds me of Duel in the Sun when Gregory Peck pops into Jennifer Jones's bedroom in the middle of the night, what's a girl to do, say go away. Edith was foolish with Sir Anthony and rather mean with that farm family. Edith was lucky with Michael Gregson and the future Lord Hexham, almost a sad sack himself. Mary was always a capable woman and basically a kind woman, not dissimilar to Lady Marjorie Bellamy. Quite a few decent and intelligent men were attracted to Lady Mary, beginning with Matthew Crawley. The only questionable gent was Sir Richard Carlisle, but Mary didn't care for him. BTW, usually we do end up sleeping in the beds we made.

Ethel's reaction stemmed from the fact that she witnessed Major Bryant's flirtatious relationship with Ethel during his stay, and so it was completely natural for her to believe Ethel's story. @Captain Mercurian That's something she should have thought of before barging in, right? In this case, Bryant Sr. clearly explained the sort of proof which would suffice: a signed acknowledgement of paternity by the late Bryant. Since the late Bryant had refused to acknowledge paternity of this baby (he knew... he did nothin), why would Ethel expect Bryant Sr. (whom had never known of Ethel and the baby's existence) to suddenly accept her claim to be true? I mean, if someone you had never seen before in your life, suddenly claims to have born the baby of your now dead son, and now wants to be supported from his estate, how would you react? Any sensible person would require some proof before acknowledging the baby.

I wonder what would have happened if Ethel said something about Major Bryant's death being fitting or appropriate or divine justice for the kind of man he was. God knows I would have been tempted to. I also don't know why Mrs. Hughes didn't speak up right away and say she saw them together and fired Ethel.

You guys completely misinterpreted what Mary was trying to say. She wasn’t being hypocritical at all. She was lashing out due to her being very unhappy, she’s forced to marry Richard in order to keep her secret about Pamuk. She even acknowledges that by saying “Aren’t we all stuck with the decisions we make?” She let herself get seduced by pamuk just as Ethel slept with Bryant. And look where it got them;Mary is stuck marrying a man that she can barely stand while she watches the love of her life get married to someone else. And Ethel is a single mother struggling to get by. Mary has a lot more pressure on her however,because she has to think of the family name and the estate.
@MarinaKaFai
@MarinaKaFai 4 жыл бұрын
True but knowing all too well how that feels, couldn't she have shown a bit of compassion? Especially when she can be genuinely good when she wants too. Just look at everything she did for Anna, her own maid! She supported her when her husband was in jail, she allowed her to have a true wedding night, she wanted to help her as soon as she learnt she had been raped and when Anna confessed she was miscarrying all the babies she conceived, she immediately offered her to take her to her gynaecologist and is possibly the reason why Johnny Bates is alive as of today. Being unhappy is no reason to snap at others and be horrible to them. It's understandable, it's human but it's not justified. She could have just thought it really hard and kept her tongue guarded under seven locks. In that regard, she had a choice and she chose to be mean about Ethel's situation while she knows how it feels as she lives it.

Marina Ka-Fai I never said it excuses her actions,I was just explaining the reason behind it. People were calling her a hypocrite or snobby, when I was explaining she DOES acknowledge her mistake. And she’s a human,everyone in this series has made mistakes. Acted out of term or said some thing harsh to someone else. Which is why Julian Fellowes is such a genius writer, all of the characters are incredibly realistic and human. Mary’s character is a spitting image of what an heiress of that time typically looked like. Tough,cold,and aloof. But also charismatic and charming in order to attract compatible suitors. Thomas was a bitter footmen Who did a lot of terrible things simply out of spite and anger because he knew that he could never be happy,but most of the time with Mary it was personal. Like her sibling rivalry with Edith. Mary was jealous of Edith because as the younger daughter she had more control over her life, while Edith was jealous of Mary because she got more attention as the Heiress than she did and was often overshadowed. Her animosity towards Mary became so bad that she published to the Turkish Embassy about Pamuk, putting the entire estate into danger. And Mary got so jealous of Edith’s happiness and title that she exposed Merigold’s secret to bernie. Robert hated the idea of losing control over the estate to where he put downton in jeopardy multiple times. All of them got their own character arcs that were perfectly executed in their own time.

I am sure that those kinds of situations happened often. Paternity denials are still commonplace. As far as the show goes, some strange girl bursts in on them during their meal and makes wild public accusations about her child’s paternity. The dead officer’s parents don’t know her and the officer never said anything about it to his dad. There were no DNA 🧬 tests at the time. There are scam artists who take advantage of grief. Besides, Ethel was not a very likable person. She was rude (as she usually is) so he matched her energy.

People like you only look at one side of the story. Put yourself in Mr. Bryant’s shoes. He’s never seen this girl in his life and right after his son died she comes out of nowhere claiming a grandson? Of course as an audience you would know what happens behind the scene but Mr. Bryant doesn’t. Imagine a world where you’re forced to accept paternity simply from say sos

This is why DNA paternity tests are so important--steal a hair from this awful rich guy with the twirly mustache (can't get the son's hair since he's dead) or take a hair of the mother's (since she seems way more sympathetic), compare it to the baby's and--voila!--paternity is proven. No need for letters. The test is all that is needed.
