Downton Abbey

4 жыл бұрын

O'Brien is known for her prickly character and manipulative ways, but even by her own standards, she knew she'd took this particular scheme too far.
After mistakenly believing that Cora was looking for a new maid, O'Brien planted a wet bar of soap underneath a pregnant Cora's bath. Cora slips on the soap and miscarries her baby. O'Brien is sickened with remorse, especially when she learns about her misunderstanding during a conversation with the Dowager.

As far as I'm concerned, this was attempted murder against Cora. She was intending to cause any harm possible, and the sheer possibilty that Cora could have hit her head on the tub or floor on the way down and been killed was clearly accounted for. Doesn't matter that she had second thoughts, in that moment she was perfectly willing to orchestrate Cora's death.

@@luckycharms7572 It's been a while since I've watched Downton, but I think it was deliberately placed for Cora to slip on causing her to fall and resulting in the miscarriage of her unborn child. If I remember correctly it was also a boy which is significant because she and her husband had three daughters but no sons, so learning it was a male child complicated their grief. Grief, loss, Cora's physical suffering, death of the child. The point is this was no accident and wasn't a spontaneous abortion mother nature style. O'Brien deliberately made this happen. She had intent. Also, the punishment didn't fit the crime. O'Brien felt slighted by Cora sure. That's understandable and relatable. Her feelings are justified. But she chose to take things to a whole other level when she harmed Cora and murdered the child. And she enjoyed doing it. And she felt no remorse afterwards.

I cannot believe she seriously thought that getting fired justified murdering an unborn child. NOTHING warrants that! She knew how much Cora and Robert wanted that child, that they didn’t want to get rid of it. This was truly an abominable and unforgivable thing that she did. Thomas would never go as far as this; while O’Brien killed Cora’s would-be son, Thomas saved Cora’s daughter from a fire.
@corsariocapitao

In my opinion, I don't believe O'Brien fully grasped the severity of her actions in that moment or thought her actions were justified. She made the floor slippery, but she could not have known that it would lead to Cora losing the baby. I believe this wasn't a carefully planned act of revenge for being fired, but rather a spontaneous outburst fueled by intense anger. O'Brien is a proud and nasty person. I think she felt betrayed and had a momentary, impulsive outburst driven by her intense emotions. In her anger and belief that Cora intended to unjustly dismiss her, she made a rash decision without fully understanding the potentially tragic consequences. The regret she shows moments after highlights her realization, finally thinking rationally. Personally, I prefer this interpretation as it paints a more complex picture of human behavior under extreme emotional duress, where actions can have far-reaching and devastating consequences, even if not initially intended.

I think we’ve all been there once or twice. A moment - though perhaps not as grave as this - where we had already felt bad for having taken a petty revenge, hurt someone important to us out of carelessness, or said something cruel to a friend out of insecurity. Even though we see in hindsight that it was silly or shameful, we can still hold on to whatever motivated us to feel upset in the first place. They hurt us first. Then we realize one way or the other that we hadn’t understood the situation. That we betrayed that person twice; once when we refused to believe their story, and the second when we took that revenge. One of the worst feelings, as if ice is running down the back of your neck.

I would not want to go trough the process of getting somebody new unless I absolutely had too, and I do agree they are entiteld to their opinions and feelings, as long as it doesn't show. If they dont like my guest thats fine, as long as they be polite to my guest all the same. I dont believe for a second people where sacked in edwardian era's for one time being cought complaining. People complain all the time about all sorts of things. As long as they do their job and do it well, there is no reason to sack. Servants are still people. I dont think every noble would forget that just because they are rich. Convinience is worth something also, and having a steady face around is prefered over new faces all the time. This is not wallmart. Servants where not as often replaced if they did their job well and didn't leave on their own accord. As long as O'Brien wasn't rude to Crawly in his face she IS entiteld to her opinions on him. I dont like her, I dont agree with her opinion on Matthew, but I do agree with her that she has every right to feel what she feels and not be dictated on what her opinions can be. The Granthams were blessed with a son and O’Brien’s pettiness killed him. My greatest regret with the show is that Cora never found out. If she had, O’Brien would’ve ended up in a jail cell, not working for the governor’s wife in India.

It is a bit over the top. I had to consider she fell in to the side of the baths edge striking her pelvis violently. Which may have caused the growing placenta to detach from the uterine wall. Granted it probably would have taken several days for her to miscarry....but, alas. I kinda wish some internet sleuth could do a 3D reenactment of the possibilities.

Of course the victim here is Cora but I always feel bad for O’ Brien too. She made a decision which she regretted instantly, she tried to fix it but it was too late. And it becomes more tragic to me when I see how nicely she treats Cora after this incident, it just shows how awful she feels and that she never forgot it or forgave herself.

I believe people don’t realize the servants sacrifice everything for the family they serve. She doesn’t have a husband, a child she works long hours and have very few possibilities to get to a better position. Cora could have been a bit smarter and not ask her questions like « how long does it take for a maid to settle ». Cora being part of the Crawleys she doesn’t have the empathy required to see how hurt O’Brien was

@@chanaberlove8720 You have to remember the time period. Even today pregnancies in a person's 40s are termed "geriatric" and are treated specially + are watched more carefully. This is the Edwardian era, where maternal mortality rates were still extremely high, and they didn't have the same methods of care we have today. My mother had my brother at 43, and it involved taking medicine to increase her progesterone and months of bedrest. I can't speak for all women who have babies after 40, but it's almost certainly harder for them than it is for a woman who is younger

But it is not much of a shock that O'Brien did what she did. First, if we look at her character, she is resentful and bitter. She is also not a very nice person. But I don't believe she was evil. What triggered her in bathroom was Cora asking about opinion on maids which at that moment O'Brien took as being ridiculed. If we take that, combine it with her thinking she will be sacked plus her overall personality it is no wonder she acted out at the moment of rage. She quickly realized her mistake and just as she wanted to rectify it Cora had an accident. Then she spent most of her time in Downton trying to redeem the unredeemable. Certainly a complex character, well written and overall added to the richness of the cast. I miss well written character in shows...
