Ruger released a second generation LCP in 2013 that included some improvements. This is not to be confused with the Ruger LCP II, that Ruger introduced in 2016.

I’ve had my Gen 2 LCP for several years, put hundreds of rounds through it and it’s been 100% reliable. I carry it w/the seven round factory mag and a Hogue grip sleeve.

I have the LCP Custom. I use 7 rnd Factory mags also, plus the Hogue sleeve. Great little set up.

Recently p/u the MAX at a gunshow and it’s been malfunction free too, but I still like the original LCP best for EDC in a pocket holster.

When the trigger releases the hammer, there is a small ledge that it falls onto on the hammer block, which holds it forward, so the hammer can be released... and then when the gun fires and the slide moves rearward it pushes the trigger bar down just a little bit more, which releases the hammer block, so when the slide goes forward again, the hammer block will catch it and stop it from firing again (kinda like a sear). The difference between a sear and a "hammer block" is that a sear holds the hammer and then releases the hammer to fire, as where a hammer block does not fire the gun, but only holds it in place (while the trigger bar is what fully cocks and releases the hammer). It's an important function in making the gun work, and without this action the "hammer block" would never release the hammer, so the gun could not fire. It's what makes the LCP and some other designs different from the pure "Double Action Only" handguns. DAO handguns (like the P250, SCCY CPC models, Bodyguard, Beretta Pico and many others) have very long and heavy trigger pulls. ... while designs (like the LCP, LCP II/Max, P3AT and others) with hammer blocks have lighter and/or shorter trigger pulls (esp like the LCP II and LCP max, which both have hammers that are mostly pre-cocked by the hammer block). Forgive the rant. It's really just for educational purposes. I just hope I explained it well. (edit: I added it, because it's either too hard to see in the animation or it's not in the animation. I think it is, but it's just too hard to see. Can't tell when the slide moves, even slightly to the rear, but at the moment the trigger bar should release the hammer block, which should move back into the natural position against the hammer).

Thank u. Just checked mine and pleasantly surprised to know it's gen 2. I cannot imagine how bad gen 1 must have been

I have the Gen 2 and the LCP II. The LCP II has better sights and trigger, but I like the looks of the original LCP better. Slips into my pocket like a bar of soap. Neither is accurate beyond 20 feet, both are snappy, but think of it as a 7 round derringer.

An extension spring as the mainspring? Interesting.

I have the LCP Custom. It has no dash in the S#, so it must be Gen 2. I have had it for several years now though. It is not new for 2023. I carry it daily, and have several boxes through it. No malfunctions. I carry Underwood Xtreme penetrators (90 grn) and it feeds them fine.

So I read from some users that early iterations of the Ruger LCP could potentially have the sear fail which could cause an accidental discharge if a round was in the chamber. Was this address with the Gen 2 LCP 1? Is the Ruger LCP 1 (Gen 2) safe to carry with a round in the chamber?
