CLIP DESCRIPTION:
At the dinner table, Frank (Steve Carell) explains to Olive (Abigail Breslin) the series of events that led him to attempt suicide.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
When a pudgy, bespectacled seven-year-old, Olive (Abigail Breslin), voices her desire to take home the coveted Little Miss Sunshine crown at an upcoming beauty pageant, her wildly dysfunctional family sets out on an interstate road trip to ensure her a clear shot at realizing her dreams in former music video directorial team Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris' quirky feature debut, starring Greg Kinnear, Steve Carell, and Toni Collette. Despite early career success as an outspoken motivational speaker, family patriarch Richard (Kinnear) continues to cling to his "Refuse to Lose" philosophy, much to the chagrin of his increasingly annoyed spouse, Sheryl (Collette). Add into the mix a Nietzsche-reading teenage son (Paul Dano) who has taken a vow of silence until he finds his fate as a fighter pilot; a horny, heroin-happy grandfather (Alan Arkin) with a penchant for creative profanity; and a suicidal genius (Carell) and Proust scholar still reeling about losing both his male lover and his MacArthur Foundation genius grant -- and the stage is set for a road trip in which sanity is sure to take the back seat.

Trust I’ve been burned out and depressed they are def not the same thing, both feel very different. Those who say that have never actually known what it feels like to be depressed. Depression is a mental illness, literally you have no energy to do anything, you can be doing the most amazing things and watching beautiful things and you get no joy or enjoyment out of it, your mentally and physically exhausted 24/7, you have negative intrusive thoughts, you can be on your bed not doing anything and still feel exhausted and even worst because you feel worthless, and there is so much more...so no burn out and depression are not the same thing...and I skimmed over some of the things depression does to you.

I love how this theme of winner vs loser always comes up and Richard is proved wrong. He believes in his 12 steps program, but he barely has any people attending his program and they’re bankrupt. Frank was the #1 proust scholar in the nation, and his status in his career didn’t make his life any happier or easier. Dwayne dedicated himself to one day become a pilot, showed extreme discipline by not speaking for hundreds and hundreds of days, then gets told that he actually can’t because of his color blindness. And last but not least Olive, who wants to win little miss sunshine more than anything doesn’t win.

The Grandpa just blowing his nose in the middle of Franks story is genuis. A lessor script would have had some conversation how the Grandpa doesn't care about Franks sob story, but with that one action we instantly understand the Grandpas attitude.
@enragedenglish

So that's true but the grandpa also has a cocaine addiction which causes you to blow your nose a alot. I took it as the little girl being surrounded by what some people would consider completely inappropriate scenarios but her innocence protects her from fully understanding the subjects and situations at the dinner table (toxic father, suicidal uncle, drug-addled grandfather, etc)

This scene is so awkward, sad, and hilarious all at once. I absolutely love it. I'm so happy that by the end, Steve Carrell's character presumptuously becomes happy through his time with his family, and sharing that special dance with them and hopefully never tries to commit suicide again. BTW lmao when Steve Carrell tries saying something serious, then the grandpa interrupts him by blowing his nose loudly. I laughed so hard the first time I saw that.

What stood out to me in the whole scene in the film is that of the whole family, she, the CHILD, was the only one who thought to just ASK what happened and want to hear it directly from them, and it's completely healthy to just explain what happened. It's how we learn from mistakes.

Richard is continuously a douche throughout the film, between this ignorance towars suicide, shaming olive over ice cream, and prioritising work over family. But I love how he changes toward the end and uses his "winner" mindset for good, persuing the goal of getting olive to the pageant, finally putting his family first and fulfilling his father's wishes.

The point of this movie is that he has no nuance. He entirely ignores the emotional aspect of all, but the fact that suicide isn't a good option unless maybe you've been suffering for a prolonged time with no indication that anything might get better ever again (observed by a close friend, rather than your own worried brain) is a proper message. It's just given in a heartless way here, because of the storyline.

@@itzumiv Funny because in a later scene, Richard plants a seed of insecurity in Olive's head when the subject of eating ice cream pops up. Also it contradicts Richard because he said suicide and depression is inappropriate for a child to know, but implanting an eating disorder in his daughter's head is appropriate?! I get sad when Olive looks at herself in the mirror at the pageant and she tries to flatten her stomach it took me back when I was a bit older than Olive, but I had that same insecurity(I was 13 by the way). I found that interesting with us girls cling on every word from our dads more than moms, so for some dads who say things like Richard did it either makes us feel worse or better about ourselves.

One was impossible to tell he was gay, Carlos was his name. The other one Wayne, was a bit effeminate. After it was bedtime I had a horrible cough which was becoming worse by the heat ( it was winter and the heat was cranked ). I was coughing and coudnt sleep. Suddenly I see this man's figure in the doorway and I just KNEW i was about to get molested. Wayne comes over and says in a Cuban accent "Honey are ju ok? Here let me get ju some water." The fact that Michael Arndt, who wrote this masterpiece of a screenplay, has only written two other films and they're both franchise sequels. It's a shame.
