The aptly named Little Penguin is the smallest penguin species in the world. Here, one waddles near the Royal Albatross Cam in New Zealand. It doesn't stick around for long though, as LGL warns the indigo interloper to keep things moving with a few claps of her bill.
Taiaroa Head/Pukekura is home to around 600 pairs of these compact penguins. Little Penguins nest underground and can be viewed year-round returning to their nests after fishing at Pilots Beach on the western side of the headland. We see them wander within frame of the Royal Albatross Cam a few times each season.
RoyalCam was set up in January 2016 by the Department of Conservation and the Cornell Lab has been collaborating with DOC since 2019 to bring the cam to life. To learn more while watching, view the cam at

Royal Cam is a 24-hour live stream of a Northern Royal Albatross nest during the breeding season at Pukekura/Taiaroa Head on the southeast tip of New Zealand's South Island.
This season (2023-24) features two nests in view. At the main site to the left of the frame, male LGK (named for his colored leg band combination: Lime/Green/Black) and female LGL (Lime/Green/Lime) return to the Top Flat nest site, where they are caring for a single egg laid on November 7.
Nearby to the right, male WYL (White/Yellow/Lime) and female BOK (Blue/Orange/Black) have been tending to their egg since it was laid on November 14 at the Top Track Flat site. This site is currently obscured by tall grass, which will die down and open up the view as the season progresses.

I think Ranger Sharyn said it was a youngster exploring. Although by this age, the young are as large as the parents. I have seen the adults wandering about at night while the albatross were asleep. It’s cute to see the pengies wander about, stopping and looking (glowing eyes).

These little blues used to climb up the hill to Lillibet’s nest a couple years ago and raise a ruckus! It’s so nice to see this one in the daytime and admire its color.

About two hour's drive south of Melbourne, you can see the Fairy penguins come up on land to their burrows ---- at night. Phillip Island. When I saw the "Penguin Parade," it was long ago and a much less crowded event, I'm sure. Nonetheless, on this particular night, there was a small crowd of about 30 onlookers. There were signs and people telling you to NOT use flash cameras, as the light would scare off the penguins. This idiot guy in front of me kept using his flash, and the tiny penguins would be scared and waddle back into the ocean. People couldn't figure out who was so rudely taking these flash photos. Finally, I got fed up with this jerk. He would hold his camera behind his back everytime some would say, "Please stop doing that!" So . . . I SECRETLY spat on my fingers, picked up some sand and rubbed it all over his camera lens. I felt it was the least I could do to repay him for his bad-mannered and disrespectful behavior.

I hope the person/people who operated the camera took the little Blue and put it where it might find its parent/s or do the people have to just leave them fend for themselves? These birds are finding no food when they go fishing 'cos those greedy damned people are eating the birds' food ie. fish/shellfish. People are such greedy buggers they scoop everything up in their wake and care not and leave nothng for nature.
