I was in high school in 1995 and my HISTORY teacher (who was born about 5 years prior to the baby boomer started) shitted on Pat Boone. My teacher was a white man. He said white people should have never infiltrated black music. And he cited how Pat Boon stole and butchered Little Richard songs. I was only 15 years old at the time and didn’t really care to learn more about what he was talking about. But when the internet and KZfaq became popular, I started researching. And man was he so correct.

Little Richard was certainly not "The Originator." Rock music came before him. He called himself the "Architect of Rock and Roll." That doesn't mean he was. I will give him credit for being innovative though. But so were others. It's a strange thing that the vast majority of his fans were whites. Blacks did not come to his concerts --only a handful.

Pat Boone took a good song (Tutti Frutti) and wanted to climb the pop charts with it. That's exactly what Little Richard and his producer wanted, when they changed the original words.
@elijahwald3 жыл бұрын
Yup, Little Richard and his producer wanted their record to climb the pop charts. Unfortunately, in those days there was no way for him (or any Black R&B performer) to get on network television or get airplay on the largest radio networks, and Boone had access to those markets. No one, including Boone, disputes that racism was involved. He felt his versions helped break down some barriers, but said: "It was called 'race music' and the artists were limited to their own stations and charts."
@elijahwald2 жыл бұрын
@mike stambaugh Nat Cole had the highest rated show on network television, and it went off the air after a year because no sponsor was willing to be associated with a Black artist. Yes, he was popular, but when he moved into a white neighborhood in Hollywood, the neighbors protested because they thought it would reduce their property values. The fact that some Black artists managed to fight their way past many of the barriers is a credit to them, but it doesn't change the fact that they faced those barriers and were limited by them, even at the height of their success.

This video shows that it wasn't only just elvis that borrowed from black music. There were lots of white performers in those days borrowing from black music. Georgia gibbs, bill haley, the crew cuts, the diamonds, jerry lee lewis, and later in the 60s, the beatles, the rolling stones, the yardbirds and more all borrowed from black music. Somehow, people act like it was only elvis who was doing it. If elvis is a thief then most white artists like bill haley, pat boone, the crew cuts, the beach boys, the beatles, the rolling stones and more were all thieves too. I find it bizarre when some rock critics talk about the 50s white rock n roll artists as if like they are thieves and then they praise the rolling stones and beatles for doing SIMILAR things. Hypocrisy and saving white guilt to protect other white artists is real here.

They’ve been trying to accuse pretty much all of them of stealing, or in their words, commenting “cultural appropriation”. I’d say they were influenced, just like black artists were influencing other black artists. LLoyd Price was the first crossover from R&B Race Music to the larger White audience with Laudy Miss Claudy & Stagger Lee!
@elijahwald3 жыл бұрын
Lloyd Price was wonderful, but his first hit was "Just Because," in 1957, and by that time Fats Domino, Little Richard, and Chuck Berry had already reached a huge white audience and had numerous Top 10 pop hits. By the time "Stagger Lee" went to number 1 on the pop charts in February 1959, the Silhouettes, Coasters, and Platters had all already had number 1 hits -- but Price's record stayed at number 1 for four weeks, which was the longest run for a Black R&B artist up to that time.
@bftime13 жыл бұрын
@@elijahwald Laudy Miss Claudy was a cross over hit in 1952 before the others. Unfortunately Price went into the army and by the time he got out the other singers had big hits. He was more involved in Race music before the others were.
@elijahwald3 жыл бұрын
@@bftime1 "Lawdy Miss Clawdy" was a number one R&B hit in 1952, and undoubtedly reached some white buyers -- but it got no play on white radio and did not make either the white jukebox or sales charts. By contrast, the Dominoes' "Sixty Minute Man" in 1951 was an even bigger R&B hit and crossed over to the pop top 20. Price was a terrific singer, and a very important figure, and you are right that he was deeply involved in the R&B scene before Little Richard or Chuck Berry -- but not before Fats Domino, who had been getting top 10 R&B hits since 1950 and played piano on "Lawdy Miss Clawdy."

Lots of great tunes came from this man, including "Moody River," "Bernadine," "Don’t Forbid Me," and the big ballads, of course. Little Richard and Fats Domino, both understood the business and eventually were thankful that those "covers" were made. Their bank accounts thanked him, too. His detractors can pile on him all the want, but Pat Boone had 65 charting singles from 1955 to 1969.

Many black artist (including Little Richard) credit Pat Boone for getting his song on the radio. Little Richard was washing dishes when he heard Pat Boone's version come on the radio, Richard got excited because he wrote the song, threw down the rag and quit his job. By Pat Boone performing many of the black artist songs, it opened the the door that allowed their music to be accepted and heard on stations around the world. Pat also narrowed the race gap by having the majority of popular black artist on his TV show in the 50's. Pat Boone turns 88 on June 1, 2022. He has two movies, a book, and a double album coming out this year.

@@grandnagus1 I agree, it should have never been an issue. Thanks to Pat Boone for opening the door that allowed people of color to get their music heard. Pat was accused of stealing Fat's Domino's song. When this was brought up to Fat's he held up his hand to display a massive ring shaped like a piano, filled with diamonds and said if it wasn't for that white kid playing my song, I wouldn't have this. Pat Boone had his own TV show. Going into his third season Pat was told by his sponsor not to have so many black artist or they would drop the show. Instead, Pat dropped the show.

Here is a consistent reminder of how counterproductive it is to bow the knee to the mainstream media and let them dictate your musical taste for you: Pat Boone has recorded in almost every imaginable genre excluding perhaps fusion, and he excelled at all of it. But the mainstream media has a cookie cutter mini-bio of the guy, and that's what the lazy armchair quarterbacks invoke out of hand ("white shoes," "goody goody," "has zero biz singing African-American records,"). Did you know he put out a new country album last year? You probably did, and he had pushed it very heavily. But that lot doesn't want hear it or hear about it. Did you know he once covered the Byrds' "Mr. Spaceman"? That still doesn't fit their narrative. Let me save everybody here a few years of frustration: that lot aren't real fans of anything. They are casual/peripheral observers for whom music is not a priority. There is no point in trying to placate nor appease them. On the other hand, the cerebral and/or the hardcore will stand in solidarity with you. And they do so for life, instead of in reaction to whichever way the wind blows.

His "rock and roll" sides were terrible and obviously rip-offs, but he was not "one trick" -- he was far more successful as a pop ballad singer than as a rock and roller, and his most popular album of the 1950s was of standards in the Sinatra tradition.
@elijahwald4 жыл бұрын
@terry waller Sorry, but that's simply wrong. It was the beginning of Richard's career, and he made a lousy deal, selling the rights to "Tutti Frutti" for $50 and agreeing to a 1/2 cent royalty per recording -- and according to all reports, he did not even receive that. In 1959 he sued and got $11,000 total for back royalties on all of his songs. In the 1980s he sued again, and settled out of court, presumably getting a very substantial sum -- but by then Boone's record sales were irrelevant.

I don't like them, but they were a different style, and were his biggest hits. So he absolutely built his first reputation with lightweight rock 'n' roll ripped off from Black artists, but then he changed direction and got even more popular as a lightweight ballad singer, doing romantic songs and pop standards.
