I'm surprised the giant black cat isn't mentioned in more histories of Quatre-Bras - it's hard to believe the Prussians lost with that on their side!

The largest coverup in world history is writing out of Giant Cats in our history. The ancients would triple the numbers of troops to write out one Giant Cat to explain away a victory. Who really bought the Trojan Horse cover up, a Greek Tabby did in Troy! Think of the damage done to the Sphinx to cover up The Giant Cats impact on history.

I really enjoyed this face off between two great gamers with fun and playful attitudes. I can see why 6mm can be appealing when it comes to big battles and agree that the Blucher rule set had good playability. Well done you two…very enjoyable to watch.

Just watching and what a game, good to see miles taking the lead😁. It's good to see Alex,s replay (watched his take on in 15mm) of this battle in 6mm using Blucher 👍. Alex have you seen Arron (project wargaming) is doing his Napoleonic,s in 2mm, but is/has made counters and a Shako to roll dice in (thinking I might 3d print one) for Blucher rule set🤔. Once again a great game with one of our most interesting cousin from over that sea🤓😂👍 viva la France 🤭

Nice! the unit I served in, for a couple of years, Dutch Army 11 AFDRA Yellow Riders, Royal Horse Artillery was part of this battle of 'Quatre Bras'. Nice to see them depicted in this wargame. (4:50). They helped holding the cross road. I have the history of its battle report, but cannot show pictures on here. When I served in that unit, my MechHwz M109 was named: Quatre Bras, after this battle.

I also love playing the French in Napoleonics. I have a huge 15mm AB French army but being a true a Brit I don’t mind when they lose!! 🤪🤪

according to von Clausewitz, Ney's objective was really just to keep Wellington from intervening at Ligny.

It was to push the Anglo-Allied army back along their line of communication, and allow for D'Erlon's I Corps to reinforce Napoleon at Ligny. He failed both.

@@StormofSteelWargaming interesting. That's not how Clausewitz saw it. He points out that pushing Wellington back just brought forward his encounter with Wellington's reinforcements. Ney was facing the whole of the Duke's army and couldn't depend on his being as dilatory as he was. The idea that Ney was supposed to reinforce Napoleon seems to have been one of the Emperor's after the fact amendments.

Ney wasn't supposed to reinforce Napoleon, D'Erlon was. Napoleon's plan was to separate the British and Prussian armies, push them both back along their lines of communication and destroy them piecemeal. I wouldn't just rely on one source as the final word on a historical event, TBH.

So when you said reinforcements arrive when they're supposed to, does that mean when they actually did arrive in the real thing? Interesting game - I was reminded of that moment in the film, 'Waterloo' when Wellington was looking at the dark clad troops heading his way "Is it French blue or Prussian black?" Even on the close up camera, it's not easy to distinguish, which might reflect the ground level experience. Once the smoke started billowing, it must've been easy to shoot at friendly units.

Yes, exactly that, the turns in Blucher are timed, so you can plan historic scenarios specifically, which is why this one began on turn 16, or about 1pm, which is when the French began their advance on the crossroads. I'm sure friendly fire occurred all the time, amidst the confusion and smoke, as you say.

In Blucher, reinforcements just move on (2BW,) at the end of your turn (after combat, in the Status Phase), and you do not pay Momentum for them.

our club tried this rules a while back. While the mechanics of the rules were okay. The musket ranges or game scale were absurd. Effective musket range for this period was 100 yards. Effective musket range for infantry is 1 base width. At that scale a base would be a battalion of infantry or a battery of artillery not a brigade. If a base is supposed to be a brigade than muskets are firing out to 300 yards!

The rules allow you to make the BW measurement anything you want. If the RAW upset you that much, just change the distances. Simple.

@@StormofSteelWargaming I also think the musketry concept incorporates skirmishes dashing out in front of the brigade so I think it preserves a nice balance of logic and playability

@@milesreidy7864 yep, it's all abstracted into the skirmish concept and maybe other units moving forward and firing before falling back into position. The firing is pretty desultory anyway, so it's no real problem. The game is more about the assault than firing.

The Dutch-Belgians have been variously described as inexperienced, incompetent and cowardly, a rogue element in the otherwise disciplined Allied Army. It is only now being tentatively acknowledged that they alone saved Wellington from disaster at Quatre Bras. He (Wellington) had committed a strategic error in that, as Napoleon advanced, his own troops were scattered over a hundred kilometres of southern Belgium. Outnumbered three to one, the Netherlanders gave him time to concentrate his forces, and save Brussels from French occupation.
