On the note of "minimal troops holding" I recall a game of Lord of the Rings tabletop I played where a single gondorian bowman held against 6 orcs in melee for several rounds until the orc lines broke and he was relieved. I marked that guy's base after ward and he got a special paintjob.

I had something similar in confrontation. My troop of orcs annihilated my opponent but the last remaining crossbower of my opponent held of the 6 remaining orcs in melee and killed 3 before he went down.

In a game of Warhammer 40.000 a lone Space Marine sergeant, after watching his squad get butchered, fought off, and routed TWO mobs of Orkz! He was literally 1 against 20 ... and he won! I was playing as the Orkz, but after the battle I insisted that nameless Sargent be given a name and a promotion. He is now Veteran sergeant Rafael of the Blood Angels Chapter!

Reminds me one of the first big battles I did in Battletech. I had a mech unit with some stingers and a few medium mecs that was suppose to be the scouts for the main small force against a much larger. Well I position my 4 stingers at the two bridges that enter the city we are defending. The other player brought his two lances to it at the same time and asked what the tonnage of the bridges where. I took note and when the assualt mechs stopped on them I asked again, "What was the tonnage of those bridge." I had both stingers at each bridge fire at the bridges and that caused it to loose support and the two assaults mechs crashed down into the revine and without jump jets they where dead. That turned the fight quickly as it equaled out the tonnage.

It is a sad conundrum that men who went into battle and fell, never knew the outcomes of the battle, other battles, their war and the impact of their ultimate sacrifices. Only those who survived and those who came after get to marvel over the myriad of details in their efforts. Well, at least as far as Earthly observers go since none of us can speak for those now beyond.

It is possible to read about it until your eyes water, but seeing it before you, and experiencing how the passage of time, and individual leadership and the courage of the men can play a huge part in the battle, gives a much better understanding of how things did, and could have unfolded. After watching this, I must agree with the historian, the Americans fought well, and although it was a defeat, it was no humiliation! Greetings from Iceland.

Can I just say: I chose this option because as overcommitted as they were with the flank in the makings, its was rendezvous or die, but I was so proud to see the Penn Irregulars crush it going up that hill in heavy tree cover. I feel like the dice reflected what the statistics did not. These were irregulars, FROM THIS PLACE, and in heavy cover against the bright red garments of the grenadier corps we picked off a commander and spooked the brits into allowing our brothers to save the army. Because you do not F with a hillbilly in his hills lest you want an F in chat.

Picked the other ending following Green's advice of "fight get beat, rise and fight again." A bit of a bait and switch in the choice phrasing. This choice was listed as "support Sullivan" implying a Camden style all out fight to the end, risking the whole army, as opposed to the Dilworth option of a retreat. Turns out this ending was about a retreat too.
@Darklight689
@Darklight689 2 жыл бұрын
Good play, I enjoyed watching. The thought i can't seem to shake though is why fight like that. When going up against a superior force, hit and run tactics combined with light troops to demoralize them while refusing to meet them in an open field until they are beaten and you are just delivering the coup de grace. Although I can sympathize that Philadelphia was only 30 miles away. It got me thinking of other tactics, though I rarely like the idea of spreading my initial forces so thin especially without any reserves. Considering the americans were mostly militia they really need to make the most out of their natural defenses and force multipliers that they can.
@theshadowling1
@theshadowling1 2 жыл бұрын
Trying to co-ordinate those sort of movements, especially with militia is a nightmare. Trying to do hit and run when you aren't in 100% friendly territory means your roving bands run the risk of getting massacred by overwhealming numbers. Guerilla warfare only worked in the Peninsular war when the French were under threat by the British Army, allowing the Spanish irregulars to roam without being hunted down by larger groups of troops, rather than cavalry patrols
@finaladvance5085
@finaladvance5085 2 жыл бұрын
Plus you have to remember rifles at that time were incredibly unreliable. In perfect weather 4/5 of your rifles would missfire. Less than perfect weather made the numbers worst And rifling wasn’t widely used (not sure if even invented yet) so bullets pretty much never went straight. It’s actually why they lined up. Not to make an easier target but to make a literal wall of bullets flung to your enemy. Also with smoke from the rifles any hiding place was immediately revealed
@Darklight689
@Darklight689 2 жыл бұрын
@@finaladvance5085 That number seems awfully high, to the point where I dont think muskets would have replaced the bow and crossbow if only 20% of your weapons would actually fire. Did you mean 20% would misfire because thats quite the misfire chance already.
@Darklight689
@Darklight689 2 жыл бұрын
@@theshadowling1 The militia at the time did have homefield advantage during the american revolution. Which is a big advantage, couple that with hiding among the population or whatnot, it seems like you have a solid shot. It's more the whole style of warfare at the time. I cannot fathom why you would fight like you still were using spears and shields. Speaking of, how did the british have a better lay of the land than the locals?
@theshadowling1
@theshadowling1 2 жыл бұрын
@@Darklight689 Because the british had far better relations with appalachian tribes. The treaties the British had honoured with the tribes were a source of discontent with the colonists. Add to this that the revolutionaries were not 100% of the colonists, there was a large minority of loyalists in the 13 colonies, fighting a hit-and-run war becomes nearly impossible to pull off. Remember, the British were not an "invading army", a good number of the troops at the start of the war were the standing garrison of the frontier of the 13 colonies.

I chose this option because this is exactly how I would of done it myself. Mainly I'm the type of person that would hold the line at all cost. Even if my efforts are pointless. I'd definitely make my opponent suffer, lose, and grinding fight for every inch of the battlefield. Even if my opponent wins it will be at a severe cost and loss of their army. That's my tactics I use when I play any table top miniature war game. It's like one time when I was playing Warhammer 40k years ago. At the end of the game I lost but my opponent's dead pile was nearly as big as mine. I looked at my opponent and said something like *"looking at the size of your dead pile I still count that as a win for me".*

@@williambodin5359 Ah yes Pyrrhus of Epirus. I wasn't just meaning it like that. I'm also meaning I'm determined and stubborn. Even when the battle is lost and i know it and my opponent can clearly see his victory in sight. I still fight on and never give up. I've won that way too because my opponent got tired of still playing the game against me even though we both know who the outcome of the battle. I remember when my cousin got me into 40k he kick my butt literally 20+ times in a row. Than when I got enough money to get extra models and got to know my army better I took out his HQ in round 2 he automatically gave up event though he still had a majority of his army and he started to complain my army is OP (after he done beat me 20+ times in a row). I even technically won by a friend's sheer stupidity. He had fist turn, we played a few turns, than when we got to round 3 or 4 he did his turn than said "I got to go,l be somewhere. good game". He thinks that he won due to game points and all that but what he doesn't know is that he technically surrendered and he also cheated by him going first and also doing 1 more turn before quitting. That's how he had more points than me.

I wonder, I initially choose to defend the road to Phily as that seemed to have the highest chances of fixing at least one good outcome. In this scenario I'm guessing the death of the British commander in the south lead to the British not being able to secure Dilworth which would have meant the entire Continental army present at Brandywine would be surrounded (or at least forced to retreat cross-country rather than along solid roads). Kinda feels to me that the southern's secondary objective (primary being locking southern continentals in their position) would be the capture of Dilworth which would have gone ahead under less competent command if the commander died. Loved these videos!

Our Wetpowder Club did Brandywine battle a while back and the Americans deployed at two crossings to prevent the Brits from crossing easily - the Brit acted like they were attacking at those two crossings and we shot those Brits we could ? The Americans had formed a "reserve" of a couple regiments and would not commit them early ( because we knew the history ) - when the Brits showed up on our right flank we had the "reserve" to commit over there to slow them down ! The Brits still across the creek NOW renewed the attacks more heavily and our defenders both started falling back down the road to Philly - we lost more overall than the Brits did but we were able to save our army because we knew the "history" of the battle !

I have seen rules that as smoke builds the effectiveness of fire can be affected, and others that give advantage to the ability to disengage as well. When developing rules one gives bias to what they feel important in the recreation / reenactment.

Going forward, it would be beneficial to your audience to draw them in with a few items. I think it would help to spur their interest in the real history, plus draw them into your games instead of leaving us as simply observers. Perhaps you could include a short blurb on a couple of the leaders in these battles and the units that fought and how they really fared. You could edit these in near the beginning of the video. And, at the conclusion, give us your statistics on the outcome of the game. Let us know how the leaders performed and which units held, broke and casualties. BTW, it is nice that you already take opinions from your viewers, just adding in some observations.

What if his grenadiers had pinned Sullivan, giving the british time to encircle Washington's army and wiping the rebels off the face of the earth? Think of the history documentaries made in our time, calling Washington a "bumbling fool" who "should have retreated when he had the chance".

Honestly... after the death of british general, it is a bit stupid.. they have junior officers whou could take command... imo it would be best then to split forces in half.... take one half to pursue americans that went to help and the other to go around and attack from the road to phily

that i do agree with, the British would have had another officer who should have been able to continue the fight after grey died. Yes a morale hit would have been taken by the force due to his death but the objective to get to Dilworth would have been quite easy for them to do even on low-medium morale and put the Americans on the back foot again after winning through to Sullivan.

@@michaelsmart1577 The only issue is that while that certain officer could take command, there are several officers who have the capability to command, and others that do not. And with the politics of the British at the time, that new officer would most likely, instead, head straight to Philadelphia in order to gain honor and fame for himself. Also, you have to consider the exhaustion, organization, and safety of couriers. The Grenadiers, after already suffering a major loss and having low morale are, in terms of organization, scattered and broken. They have little support, have lost their commanding officer, and are still under assault by the American militia. There are many more issues to deal with other than just combat readiness.
