Great project Sarge! I've been wanting to make a Tipi since I saw them at the Gathering last year. Thanks for sharing the tribal knowledge buddy.

Great idea friend. I made some coy of a tipi plan myself. I'll try to send you a pic. I got my canvas at Harbor freight when it was on sale. can't wait to see the next video's. Thanks for sharing...

the straight triangle one is for snow to slide off. The sloped one is for the plains tribes, where it's really windy and they'd face it towards the wind to be (aerodynamic) just fyi.

cool, my tarp tipi i showed you when we hung out and made bannock and tapped maples had already been there for a yr, so its been out there exposed to the elements for like 4 winters i think, this winter will be its 5th.. its nylon and still solid and not rotted on me with no upkeep at all.. a canvas tipi should be nasty bro, you beat me on this one hehe looking forward to it.

Good start sarge i have used tepees for years. I always loved them. I have camped with tents etc. etc. But i always liked tepee, easier to set up and use. I treated mind to fire proof it and water proof some what. Digger

Did the mini paper model yesterday with my son....he loved it, tho didn't know much about Indians and such. So he will enjoy this im sure!

Could be, but doing it that way would make the bottom not sit flat. It would touch on two areas and be off the ground on the other two (i know, its a circle...but hard to explain in words). When doing a half circle....it allows the whole perimeter to sit flat on the ground.

I was thinking a little bigger than the result too. I guess a small one is a better start!

Would it be easier to use a full circle design and cut the canvas into a cone so after tje frame is built you can just wrap it
@Simplemansnature

That is a nice project Sarge. It will be interesting to see what you come up with. But I do agree with others, in that it appears to be small. I would have used the full radius that I could have gotten out of the drop cloth. But again, it will be interesting to see the end result. If anything could be for your kids and another one you could make for you. Note: the military shelter halves are made from 8.3 oz. canvas, and they last for years.

Should build it in the back yard for little man to use as a club house. I mean who needs a tree house when you got a tipi

If you run into too many problems and have to redo it,you might want to make a one tenth model using balsa wood sticks as poles,paper as canvas,and thread as laces. Then when you work out the kinks you can fold out the paper and use it as a plan to make the pattern on canvas.Good luck. It's a great project now that the cooler weather is on its' way.

I think this is going to be a great thing once its done one quick question I do have thou is have you thought about using a canvas needle and artificial sinew. Its waxed and the smaller diameter may work better for waterproofing later on I just doubt the artificial sinew would be quite as strong as the bank line.

Looking forward to the end result, We did one with a bed sheet and 3/4" PVC pipes for poles, it was fun but in no way portable lol Nice sun tent

Great video as always brother! but I have studied this for many years and seeing as how the TIPI was originally made out of most likely buffalo or maybe elk hide, my personal belief is that they had a pattern almost like a puzzle but on a 5+ piece system they sewed together, I guess somewhere there are records...it would be interesting to see a pattern from a true TIPI design
@sargefaria

For a pattern, make a model with 12” dowel glued down. Use brown paper to fit a pattern. Scale it up. Got that at a mountain man/ hillbilly fair.

well its going to be small but better to build a small on first to you can see where you want to tweak things for a full size one. and I dont think there's a boy alive who did not o

Stake all fours of cloth than trace half circle.
@RenThraysk
@RenThraysk 11 жыл бұрын
A circle with 7ft radius has a circumference of 43ft. So the circumference of the footprint of the tipi is 21.5ft as using a semicircle. 21.5ft = 2*pi*r r = 21.5ft / (2 * pi) gives about 3.5ft radius on the footprint. So apply Pythagoras to the triangle formed by the tarp, a tipi center pole and ground. The length of the tarp side is 7ft (from the original circle radius), the base of triangle is 3.5ft. So height must be around 6ft. Also means the tarp will be 60 degrees from horizontal.
