My childhood as a Mets fan was miserable. Last place every season. Then in 1984 when I was 14. Doc Gooden appeared and lit up the Mets, baseball and NYC. 2 seasons later we were World Champions! Off and on the field we're all human and today Doc spoke from the heart and that's how he pitched. I'm now 54 and am chocked up watching Doc and the 86 champions reunite for Doc.. themselves and the city. Congratulations and God bless you❤❤❤

I was 12.. I remember the days in Grant's Tomb rooting for Mazzilli, Stearns, Zachry and Swan and a bunch of AAA players.. 1984 was a very special year for Met fans of our generation.. second only to 1986. It was the year we weren't a joke anymore.

I have been a Met fan all my life. Attended my first baseball game at the Polo Grounds. In the 80's I lived in Lefrak City and walked to Shea Stadium. I saw every one of Dwight's home games. Regardless of his personal issues, his immense talent cannot be disputed. He and Darryl Strawberry will always be my favorite Mets.

Lifetime Dodgers fan who lived thru these Mets. From Doc thru Jeffries, so to see Doc (and Straw) alive and sound and sober and appearing happy and grateful is a thrill. That’s right Doc, you’re only a Mets. Wishing Mets a great season, I wanna see em in the playoffs (vs my Dodgers). Those were the days. I miss em.

As a lifelong Mets, and only Mets, since 1973... I can't grasp the "high moral" stance for not signing Trevor Bower and inducting "Doc" Gooden into the Mets hall of fame. My second most favorite Mets pitcher, Tom Seaver will always be #1...

What a great tribute to see his number retired it will be nice to see during Mets games. Seeing his former teammates was also good to see. He most certainly tried to come back to the team, but his off the field thing's probably prevented him from returning to the Mets. Nevertheless, congratulations to one of the best pitchers of his era and one of the best in Mets history.

How many mea culpas do you want from another man?? I'm certain he has suffered and beat himself up about it more than anyone. He had what many baseball historians and statisticians consider one of the greatest seasons of all-time in '85. He was also the star pitcher on one of the greatest teams of all-time. Yes, he flamed out early and never fully lived up to his potential. But jeez, a little perspective...the guy never killed anyone. If you were around for '86, then you should appreciate everyone on that team for what they gave us fans. The way things look, we may never see another championship again!
@willard2729
@willard2729 2 ай бұрын
@@boxingandbulldogs6341 I want zero mea culpas. I simply made the point that my visceral reaction to gooden is to remember the bad first. I’m old enough to remember 1969 and 1973, so swallowing strawberry, cone, gooden - who all embarrassed and disrespected met fans - isn’t easy.
@billymuellerTikTok
@billymuellerTikTok 2 ай бұрын
@@willard2729 I'm glad we had at least one great baseball owner in NY who gave people second, third and forth chances so players like Strawberry, Cone and Gooden could get rings (plural) bringing championships to the city. embarrassed and disrespected??? you guys should be embarrassed and disrespected by your previous ownership who loved money and the Dodgers more than the Mets and that it took a Steve Cohen to finally get you where you're FINALLY starting to spend money to try to build a winner - not just giving it to Bernie Madoff, and recognizing Mets history - not just the "inherited history" of the Brooklyn Dodgers & New York Giants - embarrassing is that Willie Mays, Casey Stengel & Gil Hodges numbers are retired but not Gary Carter's
