Capture One needs to come to terms with what it offers and the price it's charging. Focus stacking is built in to the Photoshop/Lightroom package and that package comes with those two apps, Bridge and a lightweight video editing app, plus some other stuff. All of that for less than half the coming Capture One rental. I love Capture One but that love has a price and management is getting VERY close to that.

Couldn't agree more. I paid for a "perpetual" license a couple of years ago. No free updates was a bit of a shock and, as you say, some facilities such as Focus Stacking aren't included. I'd also suggest their non-intuitive interface could do with a radical rethink. £299 ? no thanks.

Just got Helicon and find it way better than Photoshop for stacking. Makes life so easy as a plug in for Capture One. Always find it strange that people will pay thousands for a top end lens or the latest camera and then cry about spending a few pounds for software that will make a big difference to results.

Pricing on C1 is crazy! Thank goodness I get LR package for free. I’m in Cv21 But I’m Not sure I’ll upgrade anymore. Too expensive and I don’t want a sunscription

I agree with you, it is expensive. On the other hand, I just went to the grocery store on Friday to get food for two people for the weekend, and I spent over $100. My first Photoshop software I bought, was 49.99 and for the same amount I could go to a nice restaurant 2 evenings in a row.

Thanks for your edit of my old woolshed picture, Paul. It was a sunset and all editing was done in C1. I do sometimes get carried away with overcooking images so it's good to be brought back to earth 🙂. Back to the drawing board. I tried to export an EIP but C1 didn't want to do it.

Honestly, there's nothing "wrong" with the initial edit - it's just a directional question as to whether you wanted it to feel more natural, or "hyper-real" as it's referred. Fantastic place though, definitely worth heading out there to shoot a few times! :-)

Hi !! I'm sorry if the question has been asked before : is it possible to edit before stacking with helicon ? Because when I get the stacked file back, I love the Fujifilm recipes options... Or maybe I don't get the right thing to do... :) Thank you for your help !
@Paulreiffer

Yup - you can make all your adjustments first (just be VERY careful to ONLY do global adjustments, as any mask will "slip" from image to image if you're adjusting focus. Then take into Helicon as TIF, and on the way back do any advanced/specific masking work on the resulting TIF in Capture One :-)

Hi Paul, thank you for the video - very helpful! How is the Helicon doing on plan-connecting edges? For example in your photo - how does the focus stacking effect look like in 100% close-up in tight spaces between branches? When making it in photoshop I get visible blurring on the edges...

Paul, am I right, if, in the focus stacked image that you presented, you would have to change like the white balance, lift a shadow part or decrease highlights or want some more clarity in, you would normally do it ’before’ you send the images to Helicon for stacking as you will get a TIFF file as the result? Or would you even better be off sending the images in RAW to helicon and saving the result in DNG and edit from there? What’s your prefered workflow here? Thanks in advance.

Spot on - so, CERTAIN tools (such as WB, highlight/shadow recovery etc) work much (much, much, much) better on raw than on any TIF/flattened output, but the workflow allows for that. So, the output TIF files that CO sends to Helicon include those changes, and then the combined file back in has them baked in too 👍

I just remembered your Dust Spot (Yuck) Finder video. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lc6cl8V4m86Wgqc.html This video is really helpful to find the not so obvious dust spots.

So I would pay 350 bucks and it doesnt have stacking natively? Well... I'm out 😂

Life’s about choices…! Personally, I don’t think any software out there stacks better than helicon - so a raw processor with that function bundled in, unless it can do better, is a waste of development time and license fee in my book…! 😉

@@Paulreiffer Well, if everyone thought like that, mankind would still be somewhere in the Stone Age. Why shouldn't a company try to deliver a complete package? Even if not everything can keep up with the "top" in the competition, but it makes no sense to ignore certain things. If there are capable people at work, why shouldn't it eventually be the best stacking software? Helicon is great, no one denies that, but I'm happy with an integrated solution. If you go that route you're looking at $500+ which might make sense if you work with it professionally every day for a living. For a hobby that's a lot.

Not really - the point being, with a dedicated team/company, for every step forward Adobe/CO/DxO make forward, so will Helicon. So in the time they take, each platform will get better - but Helicon started with one heck of a head-start. Sure, Adobe could invest a fortune to "catch up", but the functionality is SO sparse at the moment (compared to the dedicated tool) that I don't see that happening for a long while. And then, you have to ask, is it "worth it" to get a tool built that's still relatively niche, for a very dedicated audience, if there's already a fantastic one out there that's integrated with your own? Sometimes "advancing" doesn't mean "absorbing" - it can mean "collaborating" and putting your own resources where they can deliver most value... 😉

@@Paulreiffer It's a missing feature, no matter what. Most of the competition has it (yeah it's not as good as helicon...) and they are all useable.
