That Jet is an F-35, it is capable of taking off with a runway or lifting straight up off the ground. I designed configuration parts for the F-35 JSF (Joint Strike Fighter) years ago. It exists. In fact the Jet before this one was made that could do vertical hovering was The Harrier. It was introduced in 1969. It was produced until 2003. Up until the F-35 replaced it.

One of the things I loved about this one, and why it stands out as my favorite, is that there's no dick-measuring contest between the government agencies. They're all working toward the same goal, and when information becomes relevant, it gets shared. Bowman respects McClane, McClane respects Bowman, Bowman's superiors tell him about Woodlawn when they realize it's part of Gabriel's plot. Even Matt & "Warlock" agree to help, despite being criminals. It stands in stark contrast to the first film, where if anyone (excepting McClane) had left their ego at the door, they could've stopped the terrorists in their tracks almost immediately.

I may be odd, but I like #4. Is it better than 1 or 3? Absolutely not. Still fun. Like 3 it was a reworked script turned into a Die Hard, it keeps the John + civilian dynamic from 3, which works well with Justin Long wheezing along behind Bruce, brings back Lucy with MEW (who doesn't have much to do but is badass anyway), and gives us another charming villain with Timothy Olyphant and his geek squad. It gets ridiculous, but they had to go bigger than 3. And the 'presidential threat' sequence is kinda chilling. I would suggest just ending here. 5 is really subpar. Just stop here and enjoy Die Hard as a whole.

Vertical Take Off & Landing (VTOL) jets are a real thing. The Harrier is a well known one that was used in the Schwarzenegger movie True Lies towards the end of the film. The one used in this movie was an F-35B, built by Lockheed Martin. My father worked for Boeing on the V-22 Osprey program, which is a VTOL helicopter. They've been used widely in movies over the past 25-ish years (the Transformers movies, Battle Los Angeles), and you may recognize those more. While I'm not sure on specifics about how agile the F-35B is, or if the stunts done in the film are technically possible (it was obviously a CGI jet), the planes do exist and can hover, and land vertically.

Shanelle: "Call me out below, you guys." Deploy airbags to get customer service to star the car - Yes, OnStar could detect collisions and remotely start their customers' cars. Low-flying jet - Yes, the VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) variant of the F-35 can use the VTOL capability to hover if the conditions are right. (Edit: there we go lol, the trivia section got us there.) Note that the details above were about as real-life accurate as everything else in the movie. "Fly that $110 million jet super close to the highway and hover in front of what you believe to be a terrorist-driven vehicle." Probably not. I will take every ounce of unrealism in this movie. That aircraft is the f-35 B lightning 2 , United States Marine corps. It has the radar signature of a sparrow when the landing gear is up, the vertical fan door is closed and the weapons bay door is closed. It's significantly bigger when any of those are open. It is the second most elite plane in the world, the f22 Raptor is the only Superior aircraft. Those two replace the F-15 Eagle, any variation, as the most elite aircraft, especially the Raptor. The Raptor. The f-15 Eagle is 104 to zero in air-to-air combat. The only aircraft that has been proven to kill it easily is the F-22 Raptor. 35 is a naval aircraft. Primarily. It is stationed on small carriers that don't have A catapult device. So they need a vertical takeoff aircraft which is what this is designed to do. It replaced the harrier fleet that was aging. They also launch helicopters from those small aircraft carriers. If anyone tells you that anyone is a threat to the United States in conventional warfare, they are lying to you or they don't know what they are talking about. Any conflict we are engaged with in, we have air superiority from the onset. Onset. There is no chance of any other country or combination of countries being able to take down any of our fighter aircraft in air-to-air combat. That's what you get when you spend a trillion dollars annually on your military budget. Just the fleet of f-22 raptors, 187, cost more than Russia has spent on their entire military budget for the past two decades combined. When Russia threatened NATO, President Biden sent 12 f-22 raptors to Poland. Those 12 f22 raptors can destroy every single aircraft in the Russian military without losing a single plane. The f-22 Raptor has a radar signature of a marble. Slightly larger when the weapons Bay opens for the one second necessary to fire a weapon. I am a historian, an economist and an expert on the Constitution. Most of my military knowledge comes from the fact that I wanted to fly F-15 eagles until my eyesight went bad as a teenager. That was a while ago. Here's a video of that aircraft at an air show at Miramar. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o8h-jKV7y5zWdIE.htmlsi=50D2DKbMuAbEjBrB

The 1st vertical short take-off & landing jet fighter that I am aware of was the Harrier "jump jet" which went into service in the RAF (U.K.) in 1969. In 1971, the U.S. Marine Corp started purchasing the Harrier for service. The jet in the movie is a Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning & yes they can hover. The F-35 was a major advancement over the original Harrier considering the 35 yrs. in between. Arnold Schwarzenegger's character in "True Lies" (1994) flies a Harrier & uses its hovering ability to save his daughter from a construction crane on a high rise.

In the OLD days we called that reverse 180° "A Rockford" from a detective show called The Rockford Files (with James Garner) in the 70's. I agree with your other post on the "skinned knee" line 🤌👍

I am really surprised you didn't recognize Cliff Curtis, and yes he is a Kiwi. Cliff Curtis, much like Charles Mesure, Karl Urban, Martin Csokas, Ted Raimi, Melinda Clarke, Shiri Appleby, Antony Starr, Gina Torres, and countless others, gained fame on Xena: Warrior Princess and Hercules: Legendary Journeys before finding stardom in the USA. Curtis was in Doctor Sleep, Fear the Walking Dead, Meg 2, Avatar 2, and many more movies and tv shows.

The jet is the F35B, which is the version designed for the V/STOL operation (Vertical/Short Take Off and Landing). I think it was the variant designed for the Marines. It can indeed hover and maneuver in place. This isn't a new concept, the older Harrier jet from the 70's (the US variant of which was used in True Lies) could also land and maneuver in vertical mode.

This is definitely an underrated movie. Just because the MPAA rating went down, it doesn’t mean it’s a bad movie. But it was automatically deemed as such before people even went to see it. It’s way better than 2. But most importantly. Yes, at the time when national security was the hot button issue, this was all possible. Extremely unlikely, but possible Some do argue it’s even more possible today because of the lack of attention put on cyber security. But so far, something like this hasn’t been taken to the web, still on the ground

Nice! One of the best films in the DIE HARD franchise! Kevin Smith has a cameo in the movie and even rewrote some of the dialogue as well. Smith would team up with Bruce Willis on thr buddy cop action comedy Cop Out which wasnt well received by critics. Smith would say in interviews that "Bruce Willis was an asshole to work with on any movie set. He may have been everyone's favorite hero back in the 80's and 90's. He sure as hell wasn't mine." Following Willis' dementia diagnosis, Smith would apologize for his statements to Willis and his family.

Which I don't really get. That doesn't make those stories any less true. You can still feel bad for him. But he does also have good stories. Smith was still kinda new to directing and didn't know he shouldn't tell an actor "how" to play a scene and directed Willis in one scene to play out similar to how he did in an episode of "Moonlighting" ('Every Daughters Father is a Virgin'). Smith talks about feeling like a lil kid seeing "David Addison" on the screen.

The jet from True Lies was an AV8 Harrier, which is a VSTOL aircraft, Verticle/Short Take Off and Landing. Harriers and the jet in this movie, an F35 Lightning are the only 2 US fixed wing aircraft that can hover. The Harriers were slow, not capable of supersonic flight, they were retired a few decades ago. The F35s replaced them and are much faster and are much more versatile than the Harrier. The F35s are used by the Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps, all with some different configurations.

*edit: trivia you get most of the F-35B comment but I'll leave my full comment here.* The Marine Corp variant of the F-35, the B model, can indeed hover though it not really intended as an engagement technique and no aviator would ever do what that pilot did. That said, it could hover like that. The Harrier jump jet that proceeded it could do a basically the same thing (though slightly different in how it achieved it) and was used by Arnold as noted in another comment in the film True Lies. Also, the jet has way less ammo than shown and the F-35B doesn't actually have an internal gun, they should have shown the gun pod that they use when they want to carry the cannon.

You asked about computer hacking. My brother is head for some part of the State of Oregon network security and I have been doing my own networks since the late 90s. This would be MUCH more plausible when this movie was made with the hacking. That being said it is not and "instant" thing. The access, corrupted files, back doors, viruses and other infiltration devices would have been being set up for several years to make this all work. Would take some of the words greatest minds and an incredible control system to ever have a chance of working. In reality, no one is that good, on this scale, for it to actually happen.

Well, it's not a franchise known for scientific accuracy. The jet part is absolute nonsense, most of the hacking stuff too - but does it detract from my fun watching it? Absolutely no. The jet part is so absurd it makes the-car-into-a-helicopter thing entirely mundane. But the assistance-assisted car theft is pretty accurate representation of hacking, which is 95% making people tell you their password, not invading and decrypting it from their data. The delivery on "There's only five of them left" and the face Timothy makes are one of my fav moments in entirety of cinema.
