In today's episode, I am returning to Barbara G. Walker's Women's Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets to read about the Cailleach, Hags and Swans. I also, on request, read about the Sheela-na-gig, and an interesting discussion ensued about the origins of the 'gig' component of that name!

Is there any truth in this? Eamonn Kelly's book Sheela-na-gigs: Origins and Functions suggests 'The old hag of the breasts' Sighle na gCioch in Irish or 'The old woman on her hunkers' Sile-ina-Giob

Ive ofyen thought that the Cailleach is some kind of representation of a glacier, like from the ice age. The retreating glaciers carved the hills and dropped boulders.

Hi there from Bellingham, Washington State (hey I just heard one of your live viewers was from too). We are experiencing a bit of what we call June-uary right now. Which is either a long period of cloud that stretches from January to June during which you forget what the sun has been looks like, or just a cloudy rainy (liquid sunshine) June...which is what we are getting right now. But looking forward to the hot sunny weather predicted next week. Hope it stick this time. I've been watching since 2022, and I never manage to catch them live. I can tell you that there is a road that goes along the border where there are houses and people could just step across. But it is monitored so people generally don't take that chance. The road on the Canadian side is called Zero Ave. LOL and then it counts up from there. The city of Blaine is only on the US side. On the other side of the border it's White Rock or Surrey, depending on where you are along the border. I am originally from North of the border and my mom lives in White Rock. It's very convenient because she is only 20 min away, but there is a border check point between us. I may or may not find that very useful. 😉 I love all things Celtic, especially Irish. I was raised thinking that my mother's side was half Irish, half British genetically. But there were some questions around my Irish grandfather's birth, he grew up thinking he was Ukrainian. And then at some point he discovered he didn't have a birth certificate, which he needed to fight in WWII, his mother told him at that point that his father wasn't his father. Instead his father was an Irish man she didn't know anything about except that he was "Patrick Ross born in Dublin, died at Ypres" which was conveniently all they needed for a birth certificate. And then years later, when she thought she was dying, she called him to her bed side to confess that not only was the man who raised him not his father, but neither was she his mother. It turns out that it wasn't her death bed and she did not die. And the stories changed over the years from he was left in her care by another woman who never came back, he was left on her doorstep, he was left by a midwife. His mother was a French woman. His mother was a native woman. Round and round the stories went. He decided to latch onto the only clear thing in all of it...his father was Irish. He took Ross as his last name and when my grandma married him she dove in head first to the Irish heritage. All of their decor and knick knacks were all green and shamrocks and leprechauns and Irish flags (they were Canadian and this was pre internet so their knowledge of what was Irish was limited lol). A few years ago, long after we'd lost both of them, I got my DNA tested and discovered that my grandfather's side of my DNA was pretty much 100% Ukrainian, though I do have about 5% Irish through my grandmother's side. In fact, the daughter of the woman who he was initially raised with as his sister and then later told he was not related to, showed up on the Family DNA matches as my closest match. So much so that they had to have been brother and sister. So the family history in that area is a little confusing to say the least. But at least now I know about this whole Ukrainian side I have and I am discovering more about that I still have a fondness for all things Irish because I can't undo being raised to think of myself as Irish lol. Anyway. I originally came on to say there was something wrong with your microphone, but it seems someone mentioned that in the live and now it's fixed lol. I guess I went on a.bit of a tangent there. So I will just say I love your channel. Keep it up!
