It was a huge honour to welcome long-time friend and Boyne Valley archaeologist Geraldine Stout to the conversation series. Geraldine has a wealth of knowledge about many diverse aspects of Ireland's past. She cut her teeth as an archaeologist under the watchful eye of Prof. George Eogan at Knowth, and has been involved in excavations at sites in the Boyne Valley region for over three decades. We spoke about many things, including her love of henges and the Cistercians, her excavations in the region, and how she met her husband Matthew Stout, who she works very closely with on many projects. This conversation was truly a joy, and I hope you agree that Geraldine's positivity and knowledge make her a fantastic guest.

Lovely conversation, Anthony there are many faerie forts on land in Ireland would you be able to do something on those. I think we should preserve the whole country. Ireland monument to immortality!

Brilliant discussion! From Micknanstown (if I have the location right: 53.606, -6.335) it seems that maximum southern moonrise 🌕 would very likely have placed the moon directly over the tomb of Fourknocks on the ridge. I find it interesting that before the tombs were built some houses were found under the Boyne monument sites, but afterwards none are found so far. I wonder if the entire area was set apart to have no houses (and possibly any firelight therefrom) close enough to interfere with observations. I've often speculated on torch light signals being used to set up alignments between sites. Just an idea. I also liked the part about the Cistercians and other monastic land grants with some idea that the holy men would pray for the patrons. I wonder how such early Christian ideas might reflect the previous beliefs that were being displaced and what that might hint at as far as the rituals at the monuments. The discussion of new landowners not always having as strong of a connection to the land to protect monuments, I wonder if some program could contact new owners to share some info and educate about the sites on their land that might help them appreciate and establish a connection.

Gave up when she tried to propagate the lie that round towers were built by monks!!!... A child could figure out that round towers existed long before any monastery just by looking at the stonework!!!
