When I was learning I struggled to fit in the mirrors, signal, move position in lane for Right Hand Turn, check oncoming traffic, check mirrors, then life saver (over shoulder look behind to make sure no vehicles are overtaking), doing all of that just to turn right. But giving myself more time by starting the process earlier meant i could fit it all in. And I remember the instructor saying "look ahead, look further ahead. Then look even further ahead." That really helped me to plan ahead, which actually makes faster riding much easier to do. I've watched several of your videos and i like your style of teaching. You are direct but also mindful of being too harsh, of being unnecessarily critical, you're trying to build confidence while also correcting. It's good.

riding for decades, and I make sure to pay attention to all the details here. The streets can very quickly turn a beautiful ride into a nightmare. All it takes is a fraction of a second of distraction. If we have a backup plan, if we try to antecipate others moves, giving distance, making sure they understand the situation, we can ride for long years. The older I get, the more I see “wrong speed for a situation” being a dangerous factor. Keep in mind that most of the drivers are not driving, they are in facebook and coincidentally also driving 😬

I enjoyed that, I am a volunteer instructor next door city to Nottingham. I am down trained and do CBT and 125 training only. Been doing 24 years on and off but never fancied doing DAS as I prefer the newbies. After CBT trainee will have a few 125 lessons until they seem competent enough to ride a bigger bike then I pass them on to a DAS instructor and I start again with the newbie. Always amazes me when trainees look down, wish I had a pound for every time I say keep your head up and plan ahead. You gave a good lesson well done. Liked and subbed

Another fine video. I really enjoy this type of instruction - I wish it was more common here in the USA. I have trained several times with Eric Trow of Stayin' Safe here; the style is very similar. There is so much to the art of handling a bike in a professional manner that most riders here never see. Not only is it safer, it's a LOT more fun!

Brings back my bike test, i stalled it on a roundabout, i didn't anticipate a car using its indicators wrong and it kept coming round the roundabout even though it was indicating to come off at the previous junction, so i emergency braked and stalled the bike, but stayed calm, put it in neutral, started, first gear, looked around then moved off, i still passed my test as the examiner said i did everything right and didn't panic.

2 points here: first, there's absolutely no need to hang off at such a low speed. Second, if when hanging on you brace yourself properly with your legs and feet, you can relax more with arms. There is as little weight on the bars as you desire, you could lift your hands off the bars altogether and would still be fine in your seat. Obviously don't do that as you will crash. Your inside arm should be relaxed and bent with elbow pointing down and your outside arm straight. No need to cling on, relxi g will come with practice. 👍

This is an awesome confidence booster as this afternoon, I'm going to be doing a few hour evaluation to see if I need any lessons before I book my A2. I already do quite literally all the advice you provide to your students (as well as some stuff learnt from your other videos, MotoJitsu, CanyonChasers and the Total Control and Police Roadcraft books), so I'm hoping the most I will be needing is another lesson to get used to a 750 GS as compared to my 125s. Many thanks

Hi , cant recall,if it was this video but some advice you gave was invaluable for me , as a new rider with only 300 miles after my CBT I was struggling to feel at ease , . I was fighting the bike and not relaxed , it was when you talk about limit points , limit point closing then slow down, limit point opens up then accelerate away . This has helped so much. It may sound obvious to the experienced rider but I was riding with so much fear as such , I practiced your technique y boy has it changed my experience,, This is something that my CBT did not cover .. also the push left go left technique ( counter steering ) has dramatically improved my riding .

This is top-tier! Your videos should be essential viewing before even thinking about going on the road on a motorbike. It’s so difficult for us now. The problem is, by the time the modern motor car driver gets in his car, gets plugged into his social network, try’s to get a handle on what’s available to him re his in-car entertainment, navigational options, media and entertainment. There is no capacity left for looking out the window!! God help us!

Cheers Russ - great to see and follow you. Interesting how some things are done differently over here (Australia); We stop in 1st gear; When you turned right onto the major road with a left & right lane you went straight to the very left where as I have been taught to start in the right wheel track and stay there, so as not to cross oil lines etc. Thanks for raising my standards
@RoadcraftNottingham
@RoadcraftNottingham 4 жыл бұрын
If you watch my general positioning and common mistakes upload you'll see that insisting on staying away from the middle of the lane is dated... in modern times, cars don't leak oil like in the 70s and 80s so the only issue in the middle of the lane is debris and maybe nails so you simply take each road surface on a individual basis.

I live in the United States but I love watching your training video's. You give so many common sense tips to riding, it makes it easy to follow and remember. I have to smile when I see the learning curve you have to go through when getting a license in the UK. It's let say, a bit more relaxed when it comes to taking a test (what test) before you can get on a bike (of any size) over here. I wish it was based on the UK system. Thanks and keep the videos coming, please!!

Yes I'm still surprised how easy it is to get a big bike over there and I don't know any USA instructors who upload road lessons, they all seem to be off road theory or them uploading an example of their own riding. If you know anyone, please let me know who they are. Thanks.

@@RoadcraftNottingham There are a few local road safety classes but you are correct in that all of the videos feature the host on their bike. Some are pretty good but I don't know of any that do what you do. Maybe it's because traffic laws change from state to state e.g. lane splitting is allowed in California and not in the neighbouring state of Nevada where I live. Thanks for the reply. I took the basic course in the USA before buying a small bike. After a few years I bought a Goldwing and immediately took another course that I could take on the Goldwing. I passed my test in June this year so this brings back some memories from my training a couple of years ago and pretest lessons this year. When I was out on my actual test the examiner got caught up at lights and asked me to stop somewhere safe, he then told me "I think there is a bus stop around the next corner". I was unsure if he was trying to catch me out here as I would have said you can't or shouldn't stop in a bus stop. Luckily when I got around the corner I also spotted some free parking spaces so chose one of those leaving one free in case he wanted to pull in, which he actually did. When he seen where I had parked he said, "That's fine". I have wondered what he would have said if I did pull up in the bus stop. Btw this particular bus stop was in off the road and there were no buses there at the time whether that makes any difference.
@RoadcraftNottingham
@RoadcraftNottingham 2 жыл бұрын
He wasn't trying to catch you out, they just don't like getting split up. He's allowed to give you permission to stop in bus stops and double yellow lines etc. He'll say something like "we've been split up at the lights, please pull in somewhere safe on the left and don't worry about the double yellow lines on this occasion".... I can see why you thought that though. ☺

I've never ridden in the UK but I observed that you had the trainees park parallel to the curb, is that standard practice in the UK? For reference here in NZ in a parking space we would park perpendicular to the curb to enable 4 or 5 bikes to use one space or if parking against a curb (no box) it is common to back in at approximately 45° to the curb.

There's no rules but where it's busy we park face in to save space.

08:49 - I failed to spot the derestriction sign there on my test - there's a lot of signage plus overgrowth, parked cars around corners and the level crossing approaching. Carried on all the way down to the Ferry Boat at 30 when it was derestricted. Don't think it was given as a fault though; it's not a fast road...

So in England you are expected to enter the intersection on a turn even though you are not 100% sure you can get through?
@RoadcraftNottingham
@RoadcraftNottingham 4 жыл бұрын
Fair comment... When the opposing traffic is stopped by their red light it clears the way for you to legally complete the turn if safe but if there are already two or so cars in front waiting it makes sense to wait behind your line.

Was interested to hear you saying to use the front brake at 10:20. I'd always been told to avoid the front brake when moving the bike around at low speed. I guess the danger is that you pull too hard on the brake when the bars are turned, making the bike fall. But were you recommending they use it lightly just to control the bike's speed, or is there some other benefit to using the front in that situation (like there can be for dragging the rear when doing slow tight turns?)
@RoadcraftNottingham
@RoadcraftNottingham 4 жыл бұрын
If you think about it, the bike's going backwards so the front brake becomes the rear and both feet are down making it even safer. Hope this helps

Is it correct, that if you hold a full A1 license for more than 2 years you can take the Progressive Access route to gain a full A2 license without having to retake the theory test? I know what I'm doing 95% of the time on the road but I go fully swiss cheese mentally as soon as I go in a class room test environment ... I was told, even with the progressive access I would need to have a valid theory test certificate - any advice welcome!

How come its encouraged to use you front brake when you are at a standstill and making your bike safe. I was taught on the advanced rider course to use rear brake so if someone rear ends you, you are less likely to tip forward over you bars

If you've ever been rear ended, brakes don't help. Sometimes they tell you what a louder person told them without questioning it.

It's not a bad idea at all. If you've made a conscious decision to cover the brake there's almost no chance of you panic grabbing. I'll only cover the brake if there's any hazard, anywhere that MAY reasonably develop. Hope that helps you.
