Bolts can be a great source of low cost stock for making pieces that you need. In this video is a harbor freight mini lathe to make some pieces that we need to put the radiator back together

Thank you, it is nice to see someone make an honest video. Not only that, but seeing you call out your problems, is now giving me a chance yo go learn about them. Opened doors for new knowledge. I appreciate that!

This is the epitome of American ingenuity. Use whatever is on hand to get it done. This was the way of life in rural US before the 1950s.

If you are worried about tool height cutting to center of part i have found buying spark plug feeler guages and using those under your tool holder are easy to guage and adjust tip height just make sure they are sized to the width of tool holder and you practice on scrap to see what works then stay 1 to 3 thousands below what gets rid of the point on your scrap piece

I like videos that are truly realistic in the sense of not having that pro machinest skill and use it for home usage. Love the screw idea.

Just a quick tip use brass or aluminium to shim not cardboard it will help with rigidity of your tool.

Young man, I'll make no comment about your machine handling and practice save for one thing, I see you are using a file WITHOUT a handle or a bit of hard tube rammed on the tang. I can assure you that you will only have the pointed tang rammed into your wrist once by some slip of the file on the job in the lathe, you will not do it twice :-|

Such a very painful lesson. I’ve also seen the tang go almost all the way through the hand from the palm. The nice thing about having been an EMT since I was 17; I saw a LOT of things I didn’t have to learn the hard way. From why jewelry near ANY machine is bad all the way to “but I was just sweeping the snow out of the chute real quick, I didn’t think it would catch my fingers”. Take it from me Safety is well worth the effort.

I am thinking about getting my first lathe and have a question. Does this one have a pass through headstock? If so, would it accept something 1.5 inches in diameter?

Nice to see an unmodified mini lathe put to good use. No QCTP needed to do good work.

That's got to be a rough way to go with the compound set up in that direction.

What is wrong with this use of the compound? I do the same except for using cardboard.

One i can say every one starts some place every one starts where they feel comfortable at ppl need to see as he said b4 he worked in cnc not manual work! I see some comments like all the work for $2 part its not the cost its not the work its the fact he made it on his own from something else! So many freak out over little things but i ask this lets see you try it! Oh wait most only have a voice and no skills at least he is trying to learn new skills keep it up! One thing get a handle on the file plz even a small catch once and you will get why so many will repeat the saying as any one who has seen it happen knows to watch for things that can go wrong will its just when does it happen! Again its good to see you raw learning more need to show this keep at!

Sometimes it pays to buy the part, but sometimes the part has to be special ordered and you cant wait 5 weeks for the damn thing to get back to what you were doing.

Pls do some more research you didn’t need to use a hacksaw or file to do that and doing what you did on a metal lathe with no tool rest is a great why to get killed don’t debur on the lathe like that either just buy a debur tool run it on the edge
