The second Liverpool goal is amazing. Ironically, Argentina did exactly the same trick against England in WR 1998 . Liverpool was the first English team that played technical football, not 'kick and rush'. A great team - over almost half a century...

Oh what memories, I was on the Kop 2hrs before kick off. Gerry Byrne & Gordon Milne, who were injured during the Cup Final a few days previous, took the FA Cup round the pitch while Inter were warming, they were beaten before the match started. An unforgettable game for all who attended and especially for the Kopites who sang their own words to Santa Lucia. The following day the headlines in the Liverpool Echo read WORLD CHAMPIONS HUMBLED ON ANFIELD'S NIGHT OF NIGHTS which it truly was

@5overlord Your explanation of why the Mezzogiorno is underdeveloped is quite simplistic as well, its a lot more complicated than just blaming Berlusconi or Agnelli. Ther is much crime down there, the Mafia as well. Few natural resources there as well unlike North. many Southerners go North and do well.

From what l've read...Before the controversial defeat against inter in the european cup second leg....shankly claimed in his memoirs that he was approached by an Italian journalist straight after the 3-1 first leg win at anfield, and he said to shankly that although his team had performed brilliantly, he then said that very sadly the referee in the return leg at the San Siro had been bribed..And that their was no way that liverpool were going to go through. And sure enough in the return leg.. It proved to be the case...

If you watch the 3rd goal by tapping pause continually it shows the striker was level with the defender at the top of the picture. Specsavers? lol

hi name was ortiz de mendibil, and the story that eventually came out was that demendibil had a very sick child who needed expenses treatment, and it was inter who picked up the bill

I think you will find that that the second leg was rigged. Bill Shankly was told before the game that no matter what Liverpool would not win that night! And look at the free kick for Inter in the 2nd leg. The ref indicated for an inderect one but the player scored with a direct one!

the referee for that game was a spainiard by the name of ortiz de mendibil...and the story that came out was that de mendibil had a very sick child that needed expensive treatment and it was inter who allegedly picked up the bill

@5overlord By the way since you mentioned Glanville, I've read his column in World Soccer for many years and if you know anything about him he is an admirer of Italian football as well and has said " they are the best footballers in Europe when they want to be", a FACT that you fail to mention which keeps in form with your bigoted nature. Am I mistaken or did you use the word 'wop" along this thread? BTW many of those Fiat jobs given to S. Italians pain quite high salaries.

Well thats all history now. Shanks kicked Ortiz de Mendibil the Referee as he came of the pitch, which these days would have seen him banned for months. I'm sure I've seen the the goals from the return game, and to score directly from an indirect freekick was dodgy! Glad we've won in 5 times since! Really looking forward to Inter coming to Anfield. Inter must start favourites, as they are in great form, but that's just how we like it on nights like this! It will be electric. See you there.

@bigbaddwolff As I told ya engish football was lucky enough to succeed only when the italian football was in the dark age (and when Real Madrid,Bayern and Ajax were not great anymore),you won during the weakest era of the european cup,if u ask to any critic of football which are the most important(best teams of the european cup they would tell you Real Madrid,Ajax,Milan,Inter,Bayern Munich (and Benfica too)... nobody took seriously english football

@bigbaddwolff my dad was at San Siro and teached me everything about (then I took interest alone reading and seeing the historical games of course),and I have enough knowledge of what I'm talking about. Italy had some problems with corruption and violence (things that Inter never had something in common while your team is signed by the disgrace of Heysel and Hillsbrough) in the past but those kind of things happened anywhere and nobody has something to teach,even lesser the english.

Interesting (Inter resting) pardon the pun !! The brother of Inter's goal scorer that evening, who incidentally also played for Inter during the '60's, recently wrote a book and described in detail how the players were forced to consume performance-enhancing steroids. The current President of Inter tried to block publication of the book .... but failed.

@bigbaddwolff We all know why Inter didn't win nothing in Italy (while we won 3 Uefa cups during the '90) since '89 to '06 (ask Moggi) while L'pool has no excuse for being a mid-table club of the english league since 1990 (Blackburn Rovers is even more succesfull than you LOL). I don't get the comparasion between Inter and Chelsea. Chelsea has no national and international tradition,while Inter has both since the beginning of times. Please stop being deluding and pathetic Liverpool fan.

@AdolfGalland84 ...yes adolf, normally i have no problem with inter. but in this game on 12/05/1965, u paid the referee. how else can u explain that he awarded a very famous goal from an indirect free kick that went directly in goal. the match was fixed, we all know that.

notts county sucks, the rest is a bale. italy has won 2 world cups in the 30's beacuse was a team of honourables mens (see the history of the 1938 world cup), not bushwackers like grobbelaar, daglish, souness (infamous at the heysel) At the first apparition at the world cup you 'teacher of football' lost by usa and in 1966 the referee's politiness won you the only world cup of you history, with a phantom goal.

Inter cheats! The referee had been bribed for 2nd leg. It was widely recognised that Inter had paid him. Reputable journalists at the time saw the ref drinking champagne with Inter officials after the game. The ref retired (was banned) after that game and never refereed again. He later admitted that Inter bribed him. Inter won the game 3-0. One of the goals included an indirect free kick which the Inter player hit directly into the net lol.

in fact....just a year earlier...inter had done exactly the same thing against borrrisah dortmund...they bribed a yugoslavian referee by the name of tesnich...he failed to send off one of their players when they brutally kicked one of their players..who eventually had to leave the field..and thier was no subs back then either which helped inter to win and go through to the final...they did it again in 1966 against real madrid...they tried to bribe a hungarian referee by the name of georgy vardash...but this time it did'nt work, and real madrid beat them. and even in their defeat to celtic in 1967...it was widely suspected that inter bribed the referee in lisbon that final too

@andrethethrashe ...as for inter, i have no beef with ur club but dont be deluded. it was the english who took football to ur country in the first place. ur club was founded in 1908 following a "schism" from the MC and FC (founded by an englishman) and wasnt really an italian club at all, mostly swiss. ur golden era was in the 60s, and after that, wot? ...almost nothing until 2006 and morattis massive spending (italians are always complaining about the money in the PL). ur the chelsea of italy!
