Why did we sell our travel trailer to buy a Box Truck?
Why are we building a Box Truck DIY Camper instead of buying a used Class "C"?

Your box truck is coming along so nicely. It will be so functional and comfortable. We live and travel full time in our very nice Class C the past 8 years. It fortunetly has a walk around queen bedroom and a full shower with separate toilet area. We have done lots of updates that please us. It's fun to make our rig exactly like we want it. Don't bother about the folks who don't understand your decision to convert the box truck. Many don't understand the satisfaction and good sense of doing things yourself.

You are beautiful always however.. and lastly, your camper is so amazing, you should start a business making them to sell, Bill! (HAHAHAHAHA!) Great video, thanks

I was one of the viewers that questioned why a box truck versus a class C, I wasn't trying to be negative but understanding the decision. There is no RV that is perfect for everyone so one has to decide how you plan on using it. For my wife and I, our 2017 Roadtrek 190 Popular is perfect because it's easy and comfortable to drive, parks in our driveway and even though we have solar, we stay at places like state parks with electrical hookups if we plan on using the AC. The other thing is we use it for exploring bike trails in our area even if we plan on coming home at night. 17-18 mpg isn't bad. I'm pretty handy but if I tried doing what you're doing, I'm sure I would screw something up, I call it learning by making mistakes. Take care and good luck!

I live in FL. in my travel trailer(29 Ft.) full time, in an RV PARK. My lot rent is $514 and I pay electric. This is the cheapest way for me to live because apt. rental, house rental, mobile home rental are way more expensive. Being on SS only, doesn’t go far, but I’m blessed to have what I have. Box truck? Looks amazing! God bless, and happy trails!

Elizabeth, you had mentioned that you have leg cramps at night. I have had that problem also along with restless leg syndrome. My doc told me that he could write a prescription for me or I could get some tonic water and drink it (it has Quinine). That did it for me and of course you should check with your doctors to be sure that quinine would be okay for you with your health problems. When I first started taking tonic water for the cramps I couldn’t down it unless I mixed it with orange juice. Now (guess I’m old enough now that I don’t taste it as much as I did at first) I can sip it straight and it actually works fairly fast and gives me relief through the night. Of course just remember this advice is worth what you’ve paid for it!!! 😂 Love you guys❤

🤠 CAMPING: County Parks, they can be hidden gems, if you see windmill farms, a lot of the workers stay in RVs, so our little town of 300, put in 4 spots, electricity, with a common hydrant, good idea to have a "Y" adapter for the hydrant/spigot, handy in your tool box,

Hey Bill, check the fuel injectors in your box truck. I too bought a 2007 E450 from Uhaul. Mine has 155K miles. I tested the injectors and 2 of them were stuck open so they were constantly spraying fuel. I just bought 10 new Motorcraft injectors. I hope that helps with the MPG’s.

You’re building what you need. I had a Chevy truck and a small camper trailer. The trailer loaded was under 4500 pounds and every time I towed the darn check engine light light would come on. The tire pressure sensors constantly needed resetting. Towing on and off Long Island is a nightmare!!!! So after 2 years of 8-10 mpg towing, expensive campsites and crazy drivers cutting me off I t trying to merge between the truck and trailer I sold the trailer and bought a small express cargo van and traded the truck for a small easier to drive suv. The dream isn’t the reality.

We have 7ft wide Truck Camper and we LOVE it!! We too can pull into pretty much ANY parking lot. UTurns are easy, we can park any where a large SUV can park. We don't hang out in it, but sleep, eat, and shower in it. We are seniors now and find road trips way more fun. We used to camp in one spot for a week which is a different trip for sure. We love Walmarts too. We do truck stops as well. It's not too quiet all the time, but when we drive 12 hrs a day to get across a few states it works for us. Theh have water and dump stations which is nice. We are in CA and CANT get a campground reservation anymore!! We plan on moving to Missouri and are looking forward to being in the middle of the country to visit even more states! You're doing a great job, love your rig!!! ❤

My brother in-law and his wife bought a second hand tear drop camper. I'm not a big fan of it because the kitchen is located outside the camper. And as far as the facilities. They have to use the showers and the bathrooms on the camp ground facility. My husband and I both debated on getting a camper, but we decided not to. With all the up keep, tags, insurance, taxes and anything that breaks you got to spend a lot of money to repair. So we decided when we go on vacation, to stay in a 5 star hotel. Yes, it cost to stay in a hotel, but we never have to worry about the upkeeps.

Addressing your decision to build vs buy (class c): Bill - you seem to be the same sort of guy as my late husband Dave. He always needed a chore to do. In our marriage he purchased and rebuilt (engine and body) of several old cars (we belonged to street Rod assoc). The same with with different small boats (USN retired - of course boats!). Then it was rebuilding our house. Thru years we had many kinds of RVs (tents, truck, goose-neck, trail-light). All of which were remodeled, improved on or repaired by my hubby 😁. Then when I could finally retire we splurged on a new RV (35 ft. Motor home) and sold almost everything and hit the road full tim-ish for 5 years. After 15 months we did end up in the same lakeside campground for 5 months in summer and he was at it again 😝. Building a shed, building decks. I still miss hearing his special whistle when he was busy at his "chores.". He was always happiest doing 'stuff!'. He built, rebuilt, repaired, for relatives too (after retirement). Always best to keep a guy like that buddy 😁. You keep going Bill and Elizabeth! In

It seems many subscribers have similar questions. My question is another possibility you could have considered. Since you're not constantly taking long road trips (a couple times a year?) you could have gotten a used hybrid car which gets up to 40 mpg, stayed overnight in inexpensive motels and totally avoided all the work and cost associated with your box truck conversion. The upfront cost is initially higher than the truck (used hybrids $12,000-16,000) but the long term saving pays for itself. Wouldn't sleeping and showering in a motel, eating out in budget places, and getting fabulous gas mileage provide the comforts you need and in the long run save a bundle of money and work? It would be interesting to work all the numbers in the end to see if you've actually saved money by using the truck as your home away from home not to mention you're using the truck as a vehicle for everything else since you've sold your car!

This is actually a topic that we have been thinking about doing a video about. If we are going to take a short trip, like for instance, go to Utah for a 3 day Thrive Life convention, then it is cheaper to fly, rent a car and a hotel and eat out. (That's why we usually fly to Utah.) But for longer trips (several weeks or more), that becomes prohibitively expense. Even driving a hybrid, as you suggest, is too expensive for longer trips. Sure, the gas is much cheaper. But consider $80-100 a night for hotels, and then $100 a day or more for restaurant food for two? Even Mcdonalds now costs about $25 for 2 to eat there. And we don't want fast food very often. But a restaurant meal - with a tip - can easily cost $40 for 2 people! We want better quality food than fast food. In fact, we are very careful about our diet, and eating the way we do (which we've never talked about on You Tube) is not really even possible at restaurants. We can buy groceries (or use Thrive Life) and cook in our camper for less than half of eating out all the time. So considering the cost of hotels and restaurant food (probably $200 a day or more), for longer trips, even our gas guzzler truck is cheaper. That wouldn't not be the case if we planned to always stay at RV parks, which can cost $40-50 or more. But we plan mostly free places - Walmart, Cracker Barrel, BLM land, and many other free places that can be found on numerous RV apps. Another thing to consider. We love to "camp" in private, desolate areas up in the mountains, or out in the desert on BLM land. That is a whole different experience, that we love, that's just not possible if we're always "stuck" with finding a hotel! RVing is a different LIFESTYLE than traveling and hoteling it. But like I said, this topic will easily make an entire video, which we will probably do eventually. Cost comparison: RVing vs flying or driving a car and staying in hotels. Thanks for your faithful, consistent input and comments. We appreciate you!

know this is off topic but I had the cramping issues so I thought I would share what I was told would help by a phamacist. She told me to use tonic water because it has quinine in it. She said pharmacists us to give quinine out for cramps but the government stopped them because it,s not FDA approved. I buy diet tonic water because I'm diabetic and need to stay away from the sugar. It has work wonders for me and it works quickly. God Bless and I hope this helps if you didn't already know about it.

Magnesium and glass of water for leg cramps at night. Potassium sometimes. Helps so much, pain gone in minutes.

Something I've meant to warn you about. If you spend more than a few days at high altitudes (Grand Canyon, Rocky Mountains, etc. ) PLEASE be aware altitude can affect heart problems. Even tho my hubby had had heart issues since age 39, our Michigan cardiologist neglected to mention that when we took off across country for five years. Cardiologist in Flagstaff AZ ER told us of this when Dave had heart attack while we were camping in Williams AZ near Grand Canyon!

Yes, Elizabeth grew up in Colorado, and I spent seven years there when I was in the army. We are well aware of high altitude issues. Thank you.

So, you are implying that the cardiologist is responsible for your husband’s heart attack?

Not true about most class C's having wet baths. Some do, some have great separate showers. I have a smaller class C with a small bathroom but separate shower. Works great for my purposes. I'm sure yours will be great. Can't wait to see it. As far as gas mileage, mine is lucky to get 10 mpg. Happy travels!

Box truck for sure. Sturdy. I'm a heavy older lady not willing to crawl up on anything. Comfort would be everything (bed & bath) 😊

We own a class C motorhome that has the bed in the rear. There is a walkway around 3 sides of the bed. This is the second class C we have owned with the bed in the rear with a walkway on 3 sides. Our class C's had a stand-up shower and toilet outside the shower. The sink is across the hall from the shower and toilet. My only complaint about the class C is noise from the vibrations of the items in the cabinets. I've tried everything I can think of to dull the noise to no avail. Gas mileage is not great. We get 10 to 12 miles per gallon. We do not fill the fresh water tank while traveling.

Have you guys checked out the Access Passes available through the National Park Service? It may not help with camp sites availability or costs in national parks, but definitely saves with the entry fees.

You need to go to Arizona. It's a $180 on B. L. M land From november to april. Water sewer and trash. They are called l v t a's long term visitor areas in Quartzsite

Yes, we've heard of that. And I plan to go to Arizona sometimes. But we will not be there long term. (We have a house in Florida for our snowbird winter getaway.) Our RV trips will only be 4-6 weeks at a time. Probably one in the summer and one in the winter. We probably will not be in any one place for more than 4-5 days.
