This is the audience Q&A part of an evening with Bill Maher in conversation with Larry Wilmore at Live Talks Los Angeles discussing his book, "What This Comedian Said Will Shock You." This event was taped on June 4, 2024.
The host of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher has written his funniest and most opinionated book ever-a brilliantly astute and acerbically funny vivisection of American life, politics, and culture.
Bill Maher has hosted Real Time on HBO for the last twenty-one years. Before that Maher created and hosted Politically Incorrect on ABC. He lives in Los Angeles, California.
“Whether you agree or disagree with him-and I do both-Bill Maher had proven himself to be an illuminating force in a world that values heat over light. His is a vital voice, keeping the left honest and calling the right to account for itself before the bar of reason and of decency. I’d say ‘thank God for Bill,’ but he doesn’t believe in God. So I’ll just say thanks.”-Jon Meacham
In What This Comedian Said Will Shock You, Maher has collected and revised a decade of his direct-to-camera sermons about culture, politics and what’s happening in the world.
Free speech, cops, drugs, race, religion, the generations, cancel culture, the parties, the media, show biz, romance, health-Maher covers it all. The result is a hugely entertaining work of commentary about American culture in the tradition of Mark Twain, Will Rogers, and H. L. Mencken.
Larry Wilmore has been a television producer, actor, comedian, and writer for more than 25 years. He can currently be heard as host of Larry Wilmore: Black on the Air on The Ringer Podcast Network. The show features Wilmore’s unique mix of humor and wit as he weighs in on the issues of the week and interviews guests in the worlds of politics, entertainment, culture, sports, and beyond. Filmo and TV credit include: Jerry and Margo Go Large, alongside Bryan Cranston and Annette Benning on Paramount+; Reasonable Doubt for Hulu’s Onyx Collective; Amend: The Fight for America on Netflix; The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore on Comedy Central; Insecure on HBO; Black-ish on ABC; The Daily Show with Jon Stewart; In Living Color, The Office and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. He also served as creator, writer, and executive producer of The Bernie Mac Show, which earned him a 2002 Emmy Award for “Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series” and a 2001 Peabody Award.

Rural democrat here. Just a cautionary note about guns. Had a trespasser at 4:00 AM outside my front door, inside my truck going through the glove box. Confronted him but he wouldn't leave. Called 911and got the sheriff and it took them 20 minutes to arrive. I was sitting in my front hallway for that 20 minutes with my 357 just in case. When you need it, you need it now. The cavalry can take time to get there. When they arrived they did an unaggressive sane resolution. We need realistic gun laws to filter out the crazies and mental health and economic solutions for others. Keep in mind that the constabulary will arrive after the fact. It can happen to you. Hopefully not.

Most industrialist societies would disagree with the U.S. not having any gun control. PM John Howard in Australia enacted strict background checks and gun control after the Port Arthur mass shooting. The result was an end to mass shootings and a steep decline in gun deaths and injuries. 1/8/11 Survivor

Kind note to the audio engineer/editor/producers: Please mix the audio levels and set the compression. I can barely hear Bill, and when I turn it up loud enough to hear him, the Q&A mic runner blasts my ear drums out. Larry’s compressor threshold is set too high so his levels are all over the place. Agreed. I'm tired of being told I'm doing fine because the stock market is at record highs, and unemployment is down. Even stopping/slowing inflation isn't a victory. Mission complete should be a level of deflation that sees average Americans able to fill their refrigerators and gas tanks and pay their bills. Instead, we have whole blocks of single family homes owned by management companies that take taxpayer money to upgrade properties instead of their own money as well as corporate hotels housing illegal immigrants in rooms the average American can't afford but are paying for through taxes. Help US.

Glad to hear his evolution on guns. Sad to hear the large assumption that guns would have been used on Jan 6 if it was the black panthers, Larry has always sold that opiate to the masses. One, a gun was used by a cop on January 6th (Ashley Babbitt's death). Maybe if she was fresh out of a mental institution chasing Kyle Rittenhouse across a parking lot they would be more up in arms about it. Two, I don't recall guns being used by the cops during the summer of love G.F. riots, where there was much more destruction of property (estimated 1 to 2 billion) and loss of life (estimated over a dozen+). I do like how they gloss over the religion on the left , of loving and trusting the state like good little boys and girls, like dei, crt and aa initiatives are not discriminatory when we do it because we are doing it out of love. And state mandates (covid vax) are fine because it saves lives, but other state mandate are bad (being pro life) because it doesn't save lives :D . Biology is bigoted, etc. That sounds a LOT like a fundamentalist ideology/religion.

Although he was over 70, as l was, he was an avid golfer and fisherman. I thought he was going to die but l would not quarantine from him, though for many nights l thought l would wake up beside a corpse. I never, and to this very day, never got CoVid. Today my husband, who turned out to have Long CoVid, has to be on oxygen full time, and has been for 2 years. He is in the early stages of heart failure. We both got dhots when they became available in 2021, but this only prevents future infection for limited time. Another infection will kill him. I have not heard a lot about Long CoVid discussed by you. I would appreciate some some acknowledgement that younger fit people get it too. My 44 yr old son, who ran up mountain in CA every day was stricken with polio type of CoVid and became temporarily paralyzed. Bill Mahr is an intelligent guy and mostly can look at issues from different angles and be vocal about it. HOWEVER, the only rigid and un-relenting issue for him is his views on ISRAEL. "I Trust Israel more than any country in the world"!! If Israel was a guy who shot random passersby, Bill Mahr would still try to defend or justify him. (mind you this is exactly what Israel has done many times in the past few month and what Bill has been defending.) I watched and admired him for years. But in recent years has been noticing a very subtle hypocrisy and bias which is surfacing more and more. Maybe it was there before but I was impressed by other stuff and didn't notice. When asked "which guest challenged you the most ?" he couldn't recall. I remember several guests who had challenged him on several occasions. But none in the last few years and those who challenged him before has never returned beck.

Nobody is saying "Take away all the guns". Making that extreme the premise is a well-known way to argue illogically. It's not nuanced, it's simplistic. What the vast majority of Americans are saying - or would, if asked - is that the guns need to be carefully, comprehensively regulated, and assault weapons and all automatic conversion devices should be banned. That actually WOULD cut down the number of the mass shootings.

I served in the Field Artillery and shot every gun from the M-16 to the 155 millimeter howitzer round which weighs 98 pounds JUST the bullet. However when I got out of the Army I'd had my fill with guns. I did not raise my family with guns in the house, seemed too risky. I'm not a hunter, though I have no issue with hunting. I've never in my life even needed a gun. If I lived in a more dangerous environment I can see needing a gun.

I thought he had a nuanced and well thought out response. He even mentioned that his perspective had changed over a period of time- especially after educating himself better about such a complex social issue. Perhaps we heard something different, but his comment regarding “the Left’s” position that more legislation and federal control of guns would not curtail the amount of mass shootings. It’s a far more complex problem that will require buy-in by the vast majority of citizens, not to mention considerable investment by mental health, gun mfr’s, law enforcement and a host of other related industries. I completely agree with your other comments about having more oversight and the common sense approach you seem to posit. However, I don’t think these things will have much impact on the overall violence created by guns. Criminals will always have the same ease of obtaining firearms- any regulations or laws will have next to zero effect. Unfortunately, mentally unstable individuals who are determined to cause mass casualties will also be able to acquire firearms and other weapons. When you spend some time looking into this issue, you realize how difficult and challenging reducing this madness is! I’m not trying to minimize your response, really! Hopefully, my reply to your comment will allow you to reconsider just how difficult it is to even begin to understand how to solve this.

@@bobgearing5012Yes it won’t change anything now but just ask yourself how this country has become so violent. Gun laws have certainly to do with it. And just because different laws won’t do anything at the very moment (or in the coming 10-15 years), doesn’t mean that they won’t have an effect over time on the society at large. Just imagine being a kid, growing up with different regulations. Imagine not knowing any other laws that those you grow up with. This changes people on a psychological level alone. Progress follows. It shouldn’t be normal to buy guns for private people. Period. In my country you barely can buy guns and we have barely any shootings. That’s just the reality.

Bill is a great ‘court jester’ with his clever quips and holding up a mirror to power; that said, he does not have ‘words to live by’, as a short diatribe by him about religion is simplistic and does not represent the mainstream churchgoers who are not part of the ‘religious right’. This show I was absolutely dumbfounded that Bill Maher can’t see what the rest of the western world does about guns in the US.

I love that Maher brought up vitamin D relating to Covid. When others were out buying masks and hand sanitizer, I read up on symptoms- then went and got a vaporizer and started using eucalyptus since that plant is good for the lungs. I took vitamins and probiotics and kept myself as healthy as I could - I took long walks outside. I was 60 at the time and kept working in (showroom) sales. I was in contact with the public every day. I didn't sick until I got an office job and became sedentary, then my Covid symptoms lasted three days, only one of which I was too sick to get out of bed. I appreciate this interview immensely- because I've been feeling the same way Maher feels and it's a lonely place to be.
