Livin' On A Prayer - Bon Jovi - cover - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
Many years ago I was fortunate to have a small brush with the Monsters of Rock Festival throughout Europe.
On that bill were The Scorpions, Ozzy Osbourne, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Michael Schenker and a couple other artists.
It was fun getting to speak with and get up close and personal with these artists to see how they warmed up and to watch them perform at close range.
Not the least of which was Bon Jovi.
Jon was very warm and approachable.
Bon Jovi was a well-oiled machine with awesome lights, effects, sound and great stage presence.
I also realized that many of these Bon Jovi songs were very difficult to sing especially if you over sang the bottom and try to release and relax to go up top for the higher notes.
With that said I hope you enjoy my cover of "Livin' On A Prayer" and keep in mind that I am a baritone singing way up into this registration. This is proof it can be done with the correct information and good old hard work.

@iLoveELOKIM1 Well, I bet the way he sang this is the healthiest way to sing this part. When you type "Livin On A Prayer Vocals Only" you can hear clearly how Jon sings this in studio version and it sounds really painful. No doubt this was one of the songs that made him slowly lose his voice.

Technic is all! But even with technic, you can lose voice if you are bass, but you sing C5 every minute, you must relax voice hahahahah :D

I am Basso profondo, if I was asked to sing this song, I think I would want to cry. However, if I was to sing it, I would work on my reinforced falsetto (head voice) - my falsetto range is massive, so I would want to know if it's psychically possible. It would be a good few months of practice though, and I think it would be both mentally and physically exhausting. It would likely sound very unnatural. I have managed some high vocals before, so this isn't coming from nowhere.

Hi Ken, as a musician (pianist) I never liked to hear Jon Bon Jovi's song from another person. But... you are the first person who attracted my attention with your tone of voice, especially here: 3:18 - 3:33. You've put a lot of effort into this song! Your performance was amazing! Well done! I've been listening to Ken Tamplin's music ever since Shout's In Your Face tape came out. I actually bought that tape as well as many others from Magdalan, Angelica, Tamplin, both tapes & CDs. I dig it. Encouraging & inspirational. I highly recommend his vintage work aswell as new. Thanks for all the years of great Christian nostalgia Ken. Never stop.

The change of key at the end is really hard; it reaches a D#5 if I’m correct, and I think you hit it with full voice; amazing performance, as always :)

That's the reason Bon Jovi had to stop singing the whole chorus to use playbacks, and low the key during the 90s, and you with 55 (I think you mentioned it in another video) can reach the original song key, absolutately amazing

Samro Productions that performance was actually a mix of vocals from David Bryan (Bon Jovi keyboardist) Richie Sambora and some playback. Hannover 1986 was one of the times JBJ sings all the highnotes

In the last lines he goes in head voice if I'm correct...he drop down his head voice to match the chest so you can't easily hear the difference...he says that in his course...He is amazing.

Is it a good cover? Yes absolutely. But Jon Bon Jovi’s vocal in his prime is just unbeatable , the texture of the vocal, the penetrating power of the voice. And that’s why living on a prayer is one of the, if not the most greatest rock song of all time.

kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mr9xabaots7TnH0.html You might find it interesting to listen to the vocals only track from the studio recording of Living on a Prayer. Jon does all the chorus parts. Sounds like they may have recorded the different chorus lines separately to avoid any overlap and to give Jon the chance to rest between phrases. I think it would be almost impossible to sing all those phrases back to back, hit all the notes, and not have huge breaths in between. Still very impressive and is understandable the way the singing is broken up with different singers in concert.

Oh my God, synchronicity is amazing, Ken! I've been following your lessons for quite a while, and about a couple a weeks ago, I decided to give this tune a shot (pun intended, lol). I listened to the acapella vocals by Jon, and it's almost painful to listen how much he stretches it. It's definitely a composite; there's no way someone can actually sing that in a single take without breaking, and there are parts where it's very clear that they just "pasted" it. Anyway, I thought: "oh, Ken's advice would be not to shred my chords to pieces like Jon clearly does, to soften it a bit." The trickiest part is to get right the harmonies of the backing vocals on it! For instance, during the "woh-oh", the main vocals sing D, E-flat, and some of the vocals behind sing F, G, a tone and a half higher! Many layers are necessary to achieve the effect, but the issue it's not to saturate the mix (for those of use without a professional recording set up; I record with my imac mic alone!). I wish you could check it out, but I've only uploaded it to instagram so far. It's great to finally get to hear your piece of advice on this one; you really are the master. It's so wise that you adjust it to your tessitura.

You are an absolute monster of a singer! Please keep these classics coming. I'd love to see your reaction on Judas Priest Cathedral Spires if you ever get a chance. Tim Owens is often slagged as the 'replacement' singer when Rob Halford left but I feel he is totally underappreciated.
