Vocal Coach Reaction To Jon Bon Jovi - Livin On A Prayer - Ken Tamplin
Many years ago I was fortunate to have a small brush with the Monsters of Rock Festival throughout Europe.
On that bill were The Scorpions, Ozzy Osbourne, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Michael Schenker and a couple other artists.
It was fun getting to speak with and get up close and personal with these artists to see how they warmed up and to watch them perform at close range.
Not the least of which was Bon Jovi.
Jon was very warm and approachable.
Bon Jovi was a well-oiled machine with awesome lights, effects, sound and great stage presence.
I also realized that many of these Bon Jovi songs were very difficult to sing especially if you over sang the bottom and try to release and relax to go up top for the higher notes.
With that said I hope you enjoy my covering "Livin' On A Prayer" and keep in mind that I am a baritone singing way up into this registration. This is proof it can be done with the correct information and good old hard work.
Check out my and my student Alyona's version:
• Livin' On A Prayer - B...
• Livin On A Prayer - Bo...
I'll me posting a version by me in the near future.

Jon and Ritchie are 2 of the best of all time. My favorite rock duo of all time. I miss Ritchie too. His "Stranger In This Town" has some of the most amazing vocal songs I've ever heard - songs that haunted me for years! And ya, when I've heard Jon in that Video in Wembly Stadium and other big stadiums, he does use a more nasal style than on his albums, but with Jon it always sounds amazing. Thanks for doing that.

Exactly! Back in '86 ,before Jon shot his vocals, it was Jon and Dave hitting the high notes in the chorus and key change, Alec chipped in most times as well. I've never seen Richie sing those high notes live, which is interesting

Another great video Ken. This was when Jovi were in their prime imo. This was one of 3 sold out Wembley Concerts (3 x 80,000) They were on fire and this gig was killer (I’ve watched it enough times haha). It’s tough for Jon these days - twenty something years later and how many more gigs and miles done and of course no Richie anymore. I’ve also notice unlike some of my favourite guys (David Coverdale & Ozzy etc) Jovi don’t down tune much to allow for Jon’s voice love these days. He truly is a hard working dude. Respect

Bon Jovi is in my top 5 bands of all time, I absolutely LOVED his voice in the 80s. Today, due to his vocal issues and changing style, he is so nasily sounding. I still see him live when he is in our area, simply because his shows are still amazing, but damn would it be awesome to hear the songs the way they were meant to be sung. Wanted Dead or Alive is my anthem..... unfortunately, he cant sing it like he used to. BUT, that being said, when he does Always.... im not sure if he is using tracks, but he belts that song out.

I think he saves his vocal powers for Always. It’s brutally hard to sing, and the performance at Wembley shows he definitely still has it in him, even if it’s inconsistent. I think he forces himself on Always WAY too hard, you can literally see the pain he’s in. But regardless it was impressive

I’m a Bon Jovi fanatic and have picked up an ear for what their playback sounds like, pretty sure the high notes are sung by Richie and David Bryan (the keyboardist) here. Jon rarely sang the high notes, typically lip syncing the entire chorus in 1986-1989 singing occasionally. He stopped faking in 1990, and sang the high notes a few times in 1993. Love and totally agree with the points you made, especially about Richie. Killer vocals and guitar is amazing of course.

So many bands you met, that is amazing. I've only met Kotipelto from Stratovarius and Herman Li from DragonForce, it was an amazing experience and also I know the music style is totally different but I still enjoy all those bands you mentioned at the beginning of the video and of course Bon Jovi. Hello from Guatemala City! 🇬🇹🤘🏻

Kenny your videos are amazing! You have such an ace and laid back approach that I find so accessible when learning your vocal lessons. Ace to see you give such a shout out to the reason I started singing , I would love if you could do a series describing meeting some other singers, their technics and how they were as people. Your Ozzy comment had me in stitches. Keep on rocking in the free world dude, from Scotland !

Diggit. Brilliant analysis. I didn't realize Sambora had such vocal chops. Jeff Beck might have gotten the talk box gimmick from Alvino Rey and his steel guitar. He used to be on "The Lawrence Welk Show."

The band or backning vocals singing the line "living on a prayer" everytime at the end tho, other than that it was pretty solid but abit weak as you said. Btw would love you to do one of Halfords best live performance wich is pretty well known by metal fans, its the "judas priest - the sentinel (live)" on KZfaq with 3.5mil views. Its 86 from Dallas, Halfords golden era IMO. Thanks Ken.

Ken, you are so funny! I'm having so much fun watching these. I have a Bon Jovi story. When I was in my mid-20s way back in the last century I was dating a Delta flight attendant who was good friends with Jon and his manager/best friend, Billy. She was a total groupie and it drove me wacko. All day it was "Jon" this and "Jon" that and "Billy" this and "Billy" that. I finally decided I couldn't compete with a rock star and said adios amiga. :)

I saw them back in the 80’s with Cinderella. Never met the group but I hung out with Jon’s brother Tony Bongiovi. Great concert. Slippery when wet was the album us girls swooned over LOL. We were so silly back then with our rock n roll crushes. Thanks for the reaction, ✌️🤙
