It was around the same time as Madonna was pushing the envelope and still getting banned on a lot of English language music stations. Living Color simply didn't have the same level of established fame to get the music studios to market their material dealing with similar subjects. I remember watching this video when the song came out on Canada's French language music station (francophones really aren't puritanical about sex). I don't think it ever got airplay on the English language sister station or MTV, at least when it came out.

As for the discussion about who is and isn't "bi" and what it has to do with this song....well first of all this song was written by Vernon Reid (guitarist) and Will Calhoun (drummer), not Corey Glover (singer) and Doug Wimbish (bass player). Vernon Reid has said that the inspiration for this song was a girlfriend he dated who was bisexual and that that "led to some interesting situations". I can't remember if it was before or after Stain was released that Living Colour opened for Guns and Roses and took Axl Rose to task for his homophobic comments from the stage. This song, like most of the lyrics on Stain, deals with confusion as it goes back and forth between embracing and shunning bisexuality, denying it's legitimacy and then implying that everyone is bisexual. This is a realistic portrayal of what goes on in many people's minds.

Wow... why is it that I knew nothing of this song's existence until now? How many hard rock bands at the time were brave enough to tackle the subject of sexuality so blatantly? And an all black band, no less? My respect for these guys goes up even further. It seems that a lot of their songs touch on issues that very few artists of their genre wouldn't even consider touching. Oh, and why am I not surprised that there's an argument going on below me? I knew this song would be a troll magnet.

At the time of release other artists (e.g. David Bowie) gave LC kudos for being (for the time) so brash. MTV of course....banned the video.

I'm 15 and been bi for a year and a half, and it's been awesome, all the feelings that you have and being able to kiss both genders and feel the adrenaline and the butterflies, and when you think about your ideal someone, you don't think about a gender, you think about a person. I feel soooo free when I flirt with girls, but at the same time I like falling for boys. Even if I'm more interested in boys, I still consider myself bi. The harsh part is that I haven't come out to my family yet. And I haven't fall for a girl yet, I mean I have had some crushes, but they weren't THAT strong. So I'm thinking that when I finally fell for a girl, I would make her my girlfriend and I would come out to them . I have already done it with my close friends and they have said they sometimes feel like they are bi too so they have been very supportive with me. I hope my family will be as supportive too. Wish me luck! STAY BI!

The very very sad truth is most people don't know this song because this song killed their career. Homophobia was still kinda accepted then. Progress had been made but we sure as fuck weren't where we are now. Nowadays people look back on this and rightfully praise them for it and give them credit for being way ahead of their time, but we just weren't there yet. In fact, most don't look back on this fondly, rather they just discover it because it got no airplay at the time - I saw this video once, and even that was on a Much Music show that aired at midnight and would just that once play a banned video and have a panel discuss it (thankfully, I recorded it since I'm a fan). Aside from that, I never ever saw or heard the song on any video or radio station. It was like no one would touch it. Especially in hard rock, at the time anything dude on dude was considered point and laugh funny at best, or disgusting at worst. (Chick on chick though, wow, so progressive... NO I'm just trying to find my keys...) There unfortunately was still that stigma attached to anything gay. Not proud to admit it but way back then as a high school teenager, I didn't hate gays at all but I certainly couldn't risk anyone thinking I liked dudes, THE HORROR, so I wasn't doing anything to make people aware of this song. Sadly, I'm sure there was a lot of that. The few of us that heard this song and enjoyed this song and had it in our playlist (for me that was a VHS cassette full of rock videos) enjoyed it to ourselves. While it never played on radio or tv and there was no internet yet to speak of. And sadly, Living Colour virtually disappeared. Thankfully, I've grown since then. And thankfully, so have a lot of people. Kudos Living Colour, for doing this at a time where most wouldn't have, and indeed didn't. It may seem like nothing today but it was a bold move back then.

Man, the 90s was the height of bi-dom. Between this and "Erotica" and pop songs like Blur there was a consistent nod to the both team swingers. 😂❤
@ryancorrigan4149 Жыл бұрын
@@baz3575 Okay. Now show me how many hard rock acts were doing it. Cuz there weren't many. And yeah, Madonna was doing it lots - it was obviously very different for a chick to do girl-girl stuff in their videos, all that did was gain attention, have people saying "She's so progressive" while horny teenage boys took way too long searching their pockets for their keys. My point still stands. In hard rock, you didn't have Metallica, Guns And Roses, Motley Crue and the like singing about being bisexual. It wasn't happening.

I really like Stain, and this is my favorite song on it. It's sad that they re-recorded the solos for several songs on the CD - the originals from my cassette are better. E v e r y s i n g l e t i m e I hear this song on my CD, and the others with different solos, the newer solo grates on my ears. I'm glad the video exists so I can hear it properly. With a little research, it seems I might have lucked onto a rare "alternate version" when I bought the cassette, but sadly I threw it away when the CD came out. Burned! What I think of as the "originals" on cassette are so much better. I know, I'm ranting, but I say again, e v e r y s i n g l e t i m e...
