What's it like to live in an ALU-CAB Canopy Camper for months at a time in the mountains, forests, and deserts of the western United States? In this first video of two parts, let's take a close look at the camper's canopy tent.

@Zola Burgess. Yes, it really is! Adding the cabinets really helped organize things. Prior to that, I was always digging through bins trying to find things... and the bins would become cluttered and disorganized

@GrelanderOverlander Absolutely! That’s a great question… thanks for asking! I love making videos about questions that people ask. My mission is to help like-minded people get started overlanding and to enjoy the beautiful wilderness mountains, deserts, and forests here in the lower 48, Canada, and Alaska. I am now committed to uploading a video each week. And, while our OverLandScapes community is smaller and more intimate, I am excited to be able to answer each person’s questions and produce videos to that end. I am working on Part 2 of living in an ALU-CAB and then I’ll make one on navigation and how to find great campsites. (I actually started working on one sometime ago but I needed to find out how to record my smartphone’s screen.). Anyways, stay tuned!!!

Excellent suggestion, Jehad! Yes, I will make a video about that. I have promised someone else that I would first make a video about how I navigate and find great campsites that are free. I’ll begin working on a video about the cabinets right after that! Thanks! 👍🏻

Very interesting video! I think it's called an annex (the tent part of the RTT that extends to the ground on the side of the vehicle). Did you know if that fellow was cooking inside of it that had the encounter with the grizzly?
@OverLandScapes
@OverLandScapes 3 ай бұрын
Thanks! Yes, he said that he had been cooking earlier in the evening and that the bear smelled evidence of cooking and that's why it stuck its head under the tent. It is definitely not a good idea to cook anywhere near camper or tent!

Thank you so much for your informative videos! I'm in the process of getting an Alu-Cab but I still have small doubts that nag in the back of my head, is this thing worth the investment... but my heart is set on overlanding and the more I learn about Alu-Cab, the more convinced I am. So here's hoping that I'll be sleeping in my own Alu-Cab next summer!

@Minna Kinnunen. Hi Minna! I’m so glad that you are enjoying the videos… that keeps me going! You’re definitely not alone when it comes to making a decision on what to buy! When I bought mine a couple of years ago, I had looked at a lot of alternatives and talked with a lot of people. In the final analysis, I’m glad I bought mine … in fact, I love it. My only wish is that I could remove it if I wanted to do so. The “cabin” bolts down onto the bed rails and so it is semi-permanent. As such, I cannot get it into the garage, but I park it under a car port. And I use my truck as an every-day-driver. It garners tons of questions (on a number of occasions, I’ve even had people roll down their windows at stop lights to ask me about it). Having the amenities of “home” with me on long drives is not a bad thing, either… so I don’t complain. I have been thinking about getting an older car to run around town with, however. Thanks for being a part of the OverLandScapes community! Let us know when you get your ALU-CAB and what your plans are!

@@OverLandScapes Thank you so much for your reply! I wonder if you can help me with a couple of questions I've been thinking about? What concerns me a little is that the Alu-cab camper is specific to the truck. If my truck breaks down beyond repair I'm left with an expensive shell that doesn't fit any other truck than the exact same model that broke down. Do you have any thoughts on that? My other question has to do with security. When you go for a hike, do you always close the tent? I'm thinking that the fabric is an obvious weak spot, it's easy to cut with a knife and people with bad intentions can get in the camper and steal everything that's not bolted down. So I'm thinking that I need to open and close the tent more than once every day, which feels a bit excessive. Am I just being paranoid about it?

@@minnamk Hmmm… great question and one that I didn’t have an answer for… so I called Asheville Vehicle Outfitters in North Carolina and spoke with Norm. He said that as long as it is in the same general class, they can move the ALU-CAB camper/canopy-tent from one vehicle to another because it is the same base model but they use fitment kits to adapt to each vehicle. They have some customers that bring both vehicles to them and they just do the swap right then and there as long as they have the parts. So… Thanks for the question. I learned something! Regarding flooring the tent to keep somebody from cutting through the fabric and climbing in, I agree. If I am camped in a place where there are other people that I don’t know (such as a paid campsite or a national park (where thefts often occur), I lower the tent and put a padlock on one of the two rear latches. Otherwise, I don’t worry about it too much.

@@OverLandScapes Wow thank you so much! Good to know that the camper can be fitted on another rig. Now I'm just waiting for a quote from our local Alu-Cab reseller and fingers crossed that it all works out! 😊

Great video! I have a 2018 TRD OR in Inferno Orange and want to set up a similar build. I love your insight and detailed reviews and day to day lifestyle content too. Do you have any issues with your water tank freezing? Not sure if you’ve been in territory where that’s a concern. Also, have you considered putting a max air type roof vent in for the hotter months. I’m in South FL and that’s a big concern. The 4wheel Campers allow for up to 2 of the rooftop fans and that gives me pause when considering the Alu-Cab but it also has so many other benefits that I may have to find another solution for summer camping. Thanks for the great content!

@xsailor1970. I've got the same truck... same year and color! Is yours a manual transmission? Trying to keep water from freezing while you are overlanding is a great topic! We all face that problem... whether overlanding in a truck or an RV. I have thought about electrical tape (but I read somewhere that it can be dangerous). And, of course, I wouldn't run my heater in the ALU-CAB cabin while I’m driving. So, for the most part, I’ve simply avoided freezing weather… when the temperture will be dropping below freezing, I head down out of the mountains… and if necessary, I’ll work my way south into the deserts to avoid it. But sooner or later, I’ll get caught in sub-freezing temperatures. I’ll do some research… but please let me know if you come up with a solution! BTW, I’m down here in SW FL now too… I arrived just after the hurricane hit. Anyway, when I camp down here, I use a cooling sheet on top of my sleeping bag (often just laying on top of the sheet). I've got a couple different types and will try to share that in a video sometime. I keep a small USB fan running throughout the night (plugged into a USB port), and that really helps. Of course, I keep all three windows open on the tent when it is hot. I would rather be camping in UT, NM, or AZ than FL when it is hot (so much less humidity)! Did you know that the newer ALU-CAB Gen 3 have a vent in the roof? I saw one when I was at AVO earlier this summer but I don’t know whether it had a fan in it. Hope we can ride a trail together some day (even if it is down here in FL)! And thanks for your kind comments!

What kind of MPG are you getting with this build? What did you do to mitigate the engine power loss from the added weight?
@OverLandScapes
@OverLandScapes 3 ай бұрын
@user-tq5tq2zv1k I've been getting 13 to 15 mpg... and on average it has been about 13.5--and I believe that there has been some power loss. Where I notice it most is when I'm stopped and the light turns green. Other vehicles leave me in the just. :^) I have thought about turbo charging it...

@Koa Rivera - I am in the process of gathering cost information for my insurance coverage on the vehicle. I bought mine a couple of years ago... the basic shell and fitment kit to adapt it to different trucks was around the $10K mark back then. But I understand from subscribers that prices have changed. The best thing to do is to reach out to a vehicle outfitter near you. The Asheville Vehicle Outfitters in North Carolina did my installation. Their number is 1-844-667-3687.

No, since in having bear spray, if a bear tears the tent apart.

Yes, good point, Larry! I've come to the conclusion that bear spray can give a false sense of security... and so carrying a gun with which you are well practiced is the better way to go. Bear spray does work... but only under certain circumstances. It is really disconcerting to see the number of bear attacks that occurred in 2023... a number of which were fatal!

Hmmm … thanks for asking about that. It is tempting! But after thinking about it for a while, I think I’ll hang onto them at least for now. I can still use them when I’m not concerned about generating solar power… Like when I’m hauling a kayak to the beach or helpings friend by picking up a large roll of rug from the store, etc. But thanks again for asking and good luck!
